She was in a situation that she could not get out of. her mom had power of attorney and custody so if she went to the police, the police would just take her back and threaten her with jail time for not staying with her mom even though she was in her 20s

It's not what happened, the way you're telling sounds like she was part of the con with her mom and she wasn't. She was trapped and abused. I am not saying that what she's doing now is okay but she did not have a choice in her life with her mother. Deedee was controlling of everything and if she hadn't died, Gypsy would most likely still be trapped there.
