- I was surprised with a package this past Saturday with an Arcade1UP TRON cabinet from a few UA-camrs and Official Arcade1UP fan page members. It was an amazing surprise and before I mod the unit, let me give some impressions I have of the unit.

A lot of people knock the games, but Tron and especially Discs of Tron are quickly becoming my favorites of the earlier 80s arcade games. I've always had a fascination with the cabinet and had to own the 1up, but finally being able to spend more time with the games and their original controls, I'm in love with it. And the top 20 on the Discs of Tron leaderboards, I'm coming for you guys.

David Warner who portrayed the character Sark over 40 years ago passed away this week. "Stark" is from that other franchise Dizney now owns 😉
Star Wars also a Disney license … cost increase likely due to more profit and more costs in materials today.

Glen, I purchased your Tron joystick for the custom Tron cab I made. The stick is great but my only wish is that it was a little more true to the original size. Great review.

I'm apprehensive about the flight stick on this one, definitely feels fragile. I wasn't worried buying the cabinet though, as you have the replacement parts at the ready! Thank you Glen!

Nice review Glen. Looking forward to your next video with a deeper dive on the stick. I have an a1up Tron and it works fine but I feel it's an aggressive game of light cycles away from being broke. I am very conscious of how I play as to not have it break which hinders my play. I don't believe that needs to be screwed into the riser because if you yanked the stick that hard the stick would go first in my opinion. Glad you got got one and game on.
Maybe that was a design. If you pull the stick too hard like a gecko's tail it breaks off versus the whole machine tapling over. I didn't think about that Buffalo Bill lol and all seriousness, it's a beautiful cabinet. It is just like the Star wars cabinet but they definitely miss the mark on the controls. They should have used mine in the beginning
Agreed re: monitor black levels, a big sore point vs old skool CRT's.
But 1up partly to blame here, as they are using low cost LCD's with those high black levels vs a more premium LCD panel
This is nice, but if there price point is going up they need to provide modern arcades from late 90s/2000s....still don’t know they haven’t done a Area 51/Maximum Force or House of the Dead/Time Crisis cabinet yet.

Okay, they really did a smart thing with the black light sensitive ink on the inside. It really makes a huge difference on this cabinet
Loving my Tron cab, modded it already with a translucent light up vinyl kick plate of Tron holding up his disc with blue backlighting. Definitely interested in replacing the joystick as it more noticeably horribly when playing the light cycle game. And the trigger pull is too heavy. Can’t wait until my modded spinning MCP graphics arrives. The Discs of Tron has a huge part missing, the voice banter from Sark is missing, an absolute shame because this seriously adds so much dimension to the game. It’s gonna be great to see what you can cook up for us !!!
That's awesome.. the more lights the better :) and I bet it was licencing on stark for voice ..I miss the background on DOT too . So a PC may be in her future.. thanks for the post and watch. BTW, totally agree on too heavy a trigger.
Agree with so much of this. The packaging itself was spectacular, best yet in terms of protection and organization, and also the cab design is spectacular, top quality again.
You aren’t alone, the wiring was frustrating, poor diagram and even worse labeling, but if you’re patient you can logic through it.
I will say that the one thing that ruins this otherwise spectacularly designed cabinet is the POS flight stick. Mine snapped in less than a month, the design is absolutely terrible, any mechanical or materials engineer would reject this and not allow it to production. It’s unthinkable that they made such a terrible stick to go with an otherwise grand slam of a cabinet.
I really hope you’re able to get yours to work (and that they’re then available to purchase).

I'm glad one agreement and this weekend is when I'll be testing my products in the cabinet so we shall see what goes. Have a funny feeling we GRS Tron stick will fit right in there and solve a lot of people's problems but I shouldn't have to solve problems for a productive expensive
Great review Glen. Blue makes a great arcade cabinet assembly assistant! I really want an Arcade1UP. I might start with one of the small table top ones. Space is my enemy

Relatively new to the A1U community, have a SW and now a Tron A1U. Love the channel and your products look killer.
My wish list for if you do make controls compatible with this cab. I have seen you said you wouldn’t be redesigning the size of the stick as it was originally designed for the smaller cabs..that’s fair if a larger stick redesign isn’t feasible..my wish list..since the cab is a homage to the original Tron cab..is that the logo on the head of the joystick mimics the A1U one, where the Tron logo is to the side of the button and not the deflect logo, also..idk if possible but to retain the black light active ink on the A1U spinner..would be cool if somehow the top of the A1U spinner could be removed and attached to your superior one..so that it’s more durable with better mechanics yet retains the glow and original cabinet look they went with for this.

Thank you so much for the kind comments. With the size of a Tron stick. Nothing is never never, but molds are extremely expensive. We're talking 20-30,000 and the original stick was designed for the Gen 1 Gen 2 cabinets and to make sure it didn't interfere with the screens in front of it. With that being said my stick is maybe an inch smaller, which depending who you ask is a lot me. It still works very well and is definitely solid and will not break. In fact, it's been on the market almost 3 years and hasn't broken one yet. I hear all the suggestions and trust me all these things are on the table. Stay tuned

Will purchase the GRS DOT combo when they are available! Been checking for updates daily. Love the GRS Star Wars yoke, which does feel closer to the arcade yoke to me response wise.
You mentioned that you will go into a little detail on the Tron pcb and it’s unused USB port in the next vid. I’m interested what you’d think about using that usb for a “S” panel or other add on 5V led mod lighting for the cab. I’m using it now to power a 1.5 ft 5V USB led strip. The benefit is it works, turns off and on with the cabinet and looks good. However, I do have a little concern for its use potentially shortening the life of the PCB in the long run. What do you think Glen?
John, thanks for the watch and really happy you enjoying the Star wars joke at these type of minds. I'll be looking at in a next video with the s mod and additional power lights. I would also be a little concerned that the power draw so he's a things we'll have to look at
@@GlensRetroShow - Thanks Glen. When I posed the same question about that 5V USB in one of the A1UP mod groups it seems that folks were 50-50. Some had even use that usb to power a digital motion picture frame. Others, said they wouldn’t use it for fear it would put a strain on the PCB. I can’t imagine A1UP spent the coin for solid-state PCBs in these. So that risk might be legit.
Sum folks say have wired a 12V LED strip to the power of the cab itself using a Y-cable and work in the led strips off/on somehow to the cab’s off/on. I look forward to see what your thoughts are on it once you have time to poke it a bit. Cheers.
Awesome Glen! Been hoping you would do this with the Tron 1upcab! I remember you mentioning something about lighting up your spinner in the Tron 1up😛....any chance that will be part of the install?!
I'm doing a test now and seeing if I can light my push pull spinner on this. Stay tuned

For the price, 1up should have added a custom 3D version of the light cycle game that looks like the sequence in the original movie, ie 3D rendered cycles with varied perspectives, though this may have added too much to the cost
Point is, the value to retro gamers and collectors would improve if these cabs included one or more custom games just for that cabinet, even if just using similar graphics to icluded games.
Or simply more licensed games included for the price, though DIsney probably had final signoff and veto power over this one

How about any updates / information on the TRON stick 4/8 way powered gate switcher? Would be great to have with your stick & spinner for this cabinet mod (or other's)!

Whey should have had the rom of voice samples and put the proper backdrop in disc of Tron
If I see a price drop to $500 I would buy one. Just can't dish out the $700 especially after hearing all the issues with this cab.
I agree, I couldn't take the plunge at 700 especially with the issues. But I also have to say it's a beautiful looking cabinet. It really is but the price will come down or I'll get it on a sale. It's definitely one you'd want

Well this is the 40th anniversary of Tron so they definitely are marking this at the right time
