I was year 11 at Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate that day me and my mates wagged first period to get stoned at a mates house close by to watch funny videos lol we walked thr alleyway near the school and the director Chris Graham came up to all 5 of us, eyes half mung and then he proceeds to tell us he's the director for a new song smashproof is doing, told us to play spar and just have a laugh, me and the boiz waited all summer for that song to drop, would listen to the previews of that song for ages till it finally came out, mad love to the hood I was raised in, 1:47 274lifee
I was in Primary School when this came out. Its touch hasn't changed one bit- i still get the goosebumps while hearing it. The background story is still very much upsetting.
Aotearoa is changing right in front of our eyes. This song takes me right back. Hope all is well and everyone in the comments are healthy and aware through these new times. Keep your values and morals your ancestors lived by and have passed down to our parents to teach us.
Man.. when this song came out. my mum passed away. This song brings me back to the days of her funeral... this song would always be on the radio.. damn 7 years
I’m now living in australia and I Remember this song when I was a young kid being played on the radio I think and this bring back lotta memories man…..strolling through mangere, pak n save, getting pies from the bakery, far you just had to be there I might reside in aus but nz will always hold a special place in ma heart as it’s where I was born too❤️
There is so much heart in this song. I love this song and hope it serves as a beacon to the issues that lead to tragedy - to Pihema Cameron's death - and that it never happens again. It deserved to be number one for 11 weeks.
If ever parents want to know what their teens are thinking, show them this video... because it hits the nail in the coffin. Smashproof is the best thing to come out of the NZ local music industry. This group has soul. They say it as they see it. Awesome!!!
I was born there in Manukau, Grew up there, left there, then came back, then left again. It doesn't change much. Its still the same as it was back in 2004.. then again Im only talking about south Aucks.
As a proud Kiwi, I find it hard to admit that some people are right regarding our culture. The culture I grew up with is being slowly replaced by the American "Gangsta" mentality. The truth is, WE are doing it to ourselves.... WE make our lives this way.... and WE have the power to change it. Black, Brown, White, Yellow, Purple, Orange or Blue... doesn't matter what colour you give it... we ALL suffer with a curse of our own making.
best song to come out of nz imo, nostalgic, the message it sends, gins iconic vocals. timeless bro and makes me really think of the early 2000s era even though i was little i love knowing what people are talking about when they say they miss this era.
ohh. Very emotional song. Around this time. I never felt it before but now I feel it and see it, I'm trying to stop crying but tears would just come. Because it's true. Things are happening and the songs are reminding me. And I'll start to see that they are bringing a kind message.
I was featured as an extra during the filming of this song, 'Brother' I'm wearing a cap and walking past the shop with another guy, just after the man on the phone making a call dressed in a suit, filmed in South Auckland, near Middlemore Hospital. this music video was filmed in 2013.
is it really as bad as they make out in this song? I'd love to visit New Zealand and would love to see Maori traditions etc and of course the people of pacific islander origin who also inhabit NZ...
2021 anyone?!? I remember listening to this song all the time on channel 2, I think I was about 10 when I first heard this song... now I’m 20! Time truly flys man
These were the best days of my life yet! Left da bay to live the wellyz life at 17.. good times. Going at it on my own. Don't know how good the world is until you grow older and it piles up!
As an Aussie who discovered Kiwi hip-hop, I always wondered what this song could've been if it were released internationally. Like, its issues are mainly of South Auckland; it talks about crime, youth problems, losing loved ones to the "hood life", inequality, and low socioeconomic life. And its goal was to paint a picture of what life was like for South Aucklanders (coming from a rap group from that area) to the rest of New Zealand. And it ended up becoming the longest number-one of 2009 in the country. But the thing is, the talks about crime and poverty don't just apply to South Auckland, it applies to the world. There's so many places across the world with the same issues of innocents caught up in crime life, and Brother would really apply to them. So I just feel sad at the thought of what potential this song could've had back then.
Heard this song when I was 17 .... I couldn't understand the words but now when I listen I feel it. Tagging is art should be done right way and right place.
This was one of my favourite songs when it first came out. But now it hits me so much harder because I've just lost a good mate of mine. Rest easy brother
