My favorite easter egg was at the end when Emily Blunt looks at her reflection in the balloon. It then cuts to a shot of her face looking at it and saying "Practically perfect in every way," then going back to the balloon; however, now instead of emily Blunt's reflection, it is Julie Andrews. So she's saying that the original was practically perfect in every way to make sure people realize she's not trying to usurp the Mary Poppins role from Andrews!
I love how they also replicated some of the exact scenes. In the original film the banks children come running down the stairs whilst there father is waiting at the bottom holding the kite. The exact scene is replicated, only this time Micheals son Georgie is at the bottom of the stairs holding the kite as they come running down. Also the final scene of the movie where Mary Poppins looks back when flying off is identical to the original.
An instrumental version of a song from the first movie playing in the background, particularly during the scene with Dick Van Dyke where “Feed the Birds” is playing. It made me teary eyed!
Not necessarily an easter egg, but I loved that their housemaid was an older Ellen and that she reacted so casually to Mary Poppins sliding up the banister. She had not forgotten that the magic was real, as she was a child-like maid back then, and remained as scatterbrained as always.
What's so weard? some people live to be 100+ others don't nothing weard about it, also why do they need to explain their parents death not everything needs to be explained it's better to leave some mistory for people to use their imaginations.
I'm even sure his assistants and him are mutants who took animal forms for follow Mary, Jack and the Banks children until the bowl's world for try to trap them. If you don't trust me about this detail, just see how Wilkins and the wolf play each other with their watches.
Did anyone notice the line in Jack's opening song, "Have a pot of tea; Mend your broken cup..." I immediately thought of Mrs. Potts and Chip from Beauty and the Beast (which wouldn't be out of the question since Angela Lansbury is Mrs. Potts and also a character in this film).
I thought of that but I also thought of Disney's Alice in wonderland, how most of the cups at the mad hatters tea party were broken, which would also make sense since the man who voiced the mad hatter in the origanal alice also played Uncle Albert in the origanal mary Poppins
At the end when Jack ties the balloon to his ladder and rides away I would swear that I saw a chalk painting on the sidewalk behind him. It was very brief and towards the right of the screen!
I'm a 48 year old man and I used to watch the original daily, over and over, with my 2 young daughters at the time, about 15 years ago. I literally could not hold my tears throughout the entire movie. Mainly because my daughters' mother passed away almost 12 years ago. They are college age and almost on their own now, and that movie wrenched my heart. I do have an Easter Egg....when the papers are shown strewn about the floor before they are swept up in the box to be discarded, there was a drawing which I swear, looked like one of the A-HA "Take On Me" drawings from the music video.
My favourite scene was the ending with the balloon lady handing out balloons to make everyone fly. Also I really liked the scenes with Mary Poppin's cane with the talking bird
The Life I Lead, Feed The Birds, In The Bank, and Perfect Nanny leitmotifs appear in the backgrounds of scenes with important characters or famous actors/actresses that are known from either the original movie or from Disney in general. For example, when Van Dyke made an appearance it played one of the four mentioned above (I forgot which one, but I think it was Feed The Birds).
Another example is when Jane and Michael are talking to Mary and Michael says "it is wonderful to see you again" you can hear three notes in the background. Those three notes are the ones that played when Jane and Michael were meeting her in the original film.
And when she slides up the banister in this film (behind Jane and Michael), it's the same scoring for when she slid up in the 1964 film. I nearly screamed when I heard that.
The movie was amazing I seen it the day it came out and I did not expect to see Karen Dotrice aka (the original Jane banks) in the movie that moved my heart and Dick Van Dyke of course who was absolutely adorable and Emily Blunt did a fantastic job as Mary Poppins I had no doubt that she would be good as Mary
It was a shame that Karen Dotrice, the only other original member of the cast to appear in this movie other than DvD, had such a small role - blink and you’d miss it!
Hi nice video. You Missed this one - When the song "No where to but Up" is finished and Ms. Lansbury approaches Mary Poppins, the background music is "Let's go fly a kit"
I couldn't stop laughing when Mr. Dawes Junior does his bit of dancing on the desk as the kids join in on the singing to Turn a Little Light Fantastic and Mr. Dawes Junior places his feet on the desk but he can't get them down, so he asked the kids to help move his feet...The Topsy number was also a great one and I loved Topsy's slavic accent although Mary Poppins says no one really knows where Topsy came from and Topsy retorts the same thing about Mary...
'Feed the birds' related scene made me cry and 6:39 was really surprised! i've never knew she's on till watching this movie. I wanna go to watch again~:)
It was lovely to see Mary Poppibs Returns after loving the original movie since it first came out. I loved hearing a few bits of the original music mixed in with the new music. 💖💖
during one of the scenes with the chairman of the bank and michael, the underscore music being played in the background is actually “a man has dreams” which is from the broadway musical, which mr banks sings!!
Here's another one! When Mary Poppins's umbrella mentions he doesn't want to be put with the canes, it's a reference to the part in the original where Bert's cane (forcefully) dances with the umbrella during the chalk sequence!
I got one! In the underwater bath song, she says something like '20 leagues down deep" and there was an old disney world ride called "20,000 leagues under the sea"
The Royal Doulton Reference; not sure if this has been mentioned yet but RD have a vintage Balloon Lady figure with the same type of hat as Angela Lansbury.
There were also wonderful musical cues in the soundtrack. "Feed the Birds" and "Spoonful of Sugar" can be heard at points in the movie, adding to the nostalgia and emotional impact.
In the Jolly Holiday number from the 1st movie, Burt taps his cane on the top of the hat he's wearing; and during the Cover Is Not A Book number Jack also taps his cane on top of the hat he is wearing.
A lot the original music shows up as themes in the new movie. The Nanny song plays when Jane and Michael realize Mary is gone. Mr Banks' song plays when Michael is finished talking to the kids when they come home late. The Bank song plays when Dick Van Dyk character walks in.
If I'm not mistaken the weather vane shown on the top of the castle in the opening Disney logo is the same weather vane from the original movie (and was shown in the Topsy scene mentioned in this video).
I just want to tell you that I am a huge fan of your work. Sooo soo good! I look forward to every video you make because you got all the good T 😀 Also you are so positive. I post you on my Instagram all the time cuz people need to see more videos like yours ❤️ keep it up love 🙏🏼
Loved the Mary Poppins Returns movie far exceeded all my expectations. When you listen to the musical score you’ll hear little bits of music from the original like spoonful of sugar and chim chimmary. It’s quite cleaver and another fun way to tie the two movies together.
In the scene where Michael is looking in the attic there is a chest full of blocks with letters on them in the background and I thought those were probably the blocks from the original movie but it was just me thinking so I could be wrong
When she lands with the kite.. jack comments on her looks to which she replied "you really think so"... That's the same line she said in the first movie when they go into the drawings and Bert comments on her look
There is a lot of scenes from the book that never made it to the 1964 version of Mary Poppins. But it was a good idea to add all those scenes to the Sequel.
Nearing the end of the song “There’s no where to go but up” Jack is tying a balloon to his bike and I am pretty sure I saw the same chalk drawings that Mary Poppins, Bert and the 2 Banks’ Children had jumped into in the first Mary Poppins movie. I have not seen this mentioned in any other of these videos. It is quite a sudden change in the seen but you kind of have to be looking out for it if you want to see it.
In the attic scene, Michael picks up a snow globe, which is identical to the one that Mary gives them when she signs "go to sleep" to them. There are also blocks in a box that could be the ones that magically go up into janes hands during one of the songs in the original.
Would you please do a video about all of the musical Easter eggs in the film? I particularly remember the sad music Mr Banks sang "A man has dreams of walking with giants" playing (instrumentally only) when Michael breaks down in the foyer of the house as they are leaving
When Walt Disney was trying to get the rights to Mary Poppins, he went to visit the author. She later said that talking to Walt was like he was dangling a pocket watch in front of her. The fox and the Banker do the same thing with their watches in Mary Poppins Returns.
@@FlicksAndTheCity Sincerely your video is awesome. I am truly in love of the original film and the mystery of Mary. I had seen Mary Poppins return in the first day it out at theater. I was very excited and curious about the return of our beloved Mary. I checked every details, movements, dialog... But I admet at the end I was frustrated and questioned. I know the return was based on the P.L books on this movie again, and your video confirm that. But now I'm waiting for the next video about the St Paul's snow globe, because I remember Mary pull it on her bag at the end of the original film.... The mystery is total. Many thanks from France.
Aw, thank you so much for your kind words, Athony - they really mean a lot! :-) Emily Blunt was just fantastic, as you say. Such an incredible actress! Currently working on the new video (that I mentioned in this easter egg video) - hope you enjoy it when it's ready. In the meantime, I made another video on Mary Poppins Returns just the other day; here's the link in case you missed it ► ua-cam.com/video/cPu9LAdjVuM/v-deo.html Have fun watching! And all the very best from England! :-)
I caught a couple Easter eggs not listed. 1. The blocks that are played with in the first movie are in a trunk/box in the attic. 2. The Daulton bowl (now important in the second movie) can be seen just behind one of the maids through the kitchen door in the first movie. It’s a scene where the two maids are standing holding the door open. It is on a shelf in the room behind them. 3. Closer to the end, they walk through the same park from the first movie; there are chalk drawings on the ground as an homage to the original.
The scene where Mary Poppins flys in with the kite for the first time and lands just in front of a bridge. Is the same bridge from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for the musical number Lonely Lovely Man.
That the Kids first didn't want to take a bath and then beg to take a bath again. Reminded me of the scene where the kids don't want to tidy up the room and then beg to do it again.
I’m quite young and I grew up with Mary Poppins, the movie and the book, but I haven’t seen it in a while, so I’m really surprised when I got nearly all of these when I watched the movie.
When Mary Poppins arrives Jack says Mary Poppins beautiful as always she replies "do you really think so"... that line is in the first movie when they jump into Bert's drawings bart says "Mary Poppins you look beautiful" and she replies "do you really think so"
At the end when she looks into the balloon and sees her reflection, it shows her face and she looks back at the balloon again, is it Julie Andrews reflection she sees the second time? I can’t seem to find a clip to double check it.
In Jane & Michael's nursery in the original movie are a dollhouse and a rocking horse. In this one, there's a similar dollhouse in the nursery and a rocking horse in the attic. Also, the mini-stories in Cover is Not The Book are all based on chapters in the original books. When Lin-Manuel Miranda steps up an impossible staircase of books in that sequence, it recalls the impossible staircase made of chimney smoke in the original movie. In the china-plate sequence in the books, a handkerchief is left behind, like the scarf in this film. The Balloon Lady is straight out of the books. Furthermore, the children in the film are John, Annabel and Georgie. In the books, Jane and Michael eventually have three more siblings: twins named John and Barbara and a baby named Annabel. George is their father's name.
I love Mary poppins the original julie Andrews film and the recent sequel. But I especially loved the Broadway play of mary poppins. There is nothing like a live performance ! There just is something about it !
Mary in the new film had two animated birds on her index finger inside the Royal Doulton bowl, as Mary in the old film did when she was singing "A Spoonful of Sugar."
LOL, you should go see the movie. But seriously I don't think this video spoiled anything for you, hopefully you can look out for some of these easter eggs and others now!
It would have been better IF the original had never been made. You sat there wishing, what with all the CG and modern easy cheapness, that they could have done at least a passable job. WHAT A JOKE.
paul arnold well I think that it’s hard to make a sequel to such a great movie. I think it was a great effort, and I love all the songs, actors/actress and the story.
During the Topsy Turvy scene with Marry and Jack the kids, the mixed up musical instruments that Topsy claims are due to her bad luck are actually from Burt's original 1 man Music Maker Suit and are made that way on purpose not mixed up by her bad luck day. They are from the original movie Burt wore them in the park they reused them for the number with Topsy Turvy. Also when Michel and Jane are cleaning out the Attic put the Kite in the tea crate to take out to the trash I think that crate or one like it was used to sit on the ceiling have tea on the tea-party jam and bread on the ceiling scene With Uncle Albert Celong Tea crate out by the trash before the kite blows away and Marry arrives to start Nannying the new Banks kids. I noticed too many more to list here like the castle in the sky during the balloon song at first I thought it was the one from Disney land but now I think its supposed to be the one from the Sword in the stone movie.
Thanks for the comparison, I know an Disney animated film that has a song of the same scene from Mary Poppins returns. The Hunchback of Notre Dame and the song Topsy Tuvey Day. Also I got the Bedknobs and Broomsticks joke. That was David Tomlinson's 2nd film after the original Mary Poppins. The question how did you find the plot hole on Mr. Dawes Sr. as the old Bert since 1964 film.
My sister was watching this with me the day after she saw the movie Us and when Mary Poppins walked away and her reflection stayed, she said, “What kinda tethered shit is this?”
At the very end of the movie - when Mary Poppins looks at her reflection in the balloon - is the reflection actually of the Julie Andrews's Mary Poppins? Saw the movie today with all our kids. Fantastic film!

In the meantime, I made another video on Mary Poppins Returns just the other day; here's the link in case you missed it ► ua-cam.com/video/cPu9LAdjVuM/v-deo.html Have fun watching! And all the very best from England! :-)
Can you imagine that I love that song
I caught a couple Easter eggs not listed.
1. The blocks that are played with in the first movie are in a trunk/box in the attic.
2. The Daulton bowl (now important in the second movie) can be seen just behind one of the maids through the kitchen door in the first movie. It’s a scene where the two maids are standing holding the door open. It is on a shelf in the room behind them.
3. Closer to the end, they walk through the same park from the first movie; there are chalk drawings on the ground as an homage to the original.
In the balloon sequence at the end someone is riding on a bicycle while flying which looks like a reference to the famous E.T. movie.
Hey jan! Did you spot the alphabet blocks from the original they were in the attic when Micheal was looking for the certificate 👍 loved the movie😎
The scene where Mary Poppins flys in with the kite for the first time and lands just in front of a bridge. Is the same bridge from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for the musical number Lonely Lovely Man.
I’m watching this before going to the theatre tomorrow for a second viewing of the movie!
6:51 does that look familiar to you? Patington? The new Christopher Robin?????? They all live in the same area 🤣

When Mary Poppins arrives Jack says Mary Poppins beautiful as always she replies "do you really think so"... that line is in the first movie when they jump into Bert's drawings bart says "Mary Poppins you look beautiful" and she replies "do you really think so"
I've never cried so much in a long time. I held this movie off because I thought it was the cliche Disney remake/sequel trash. But damn.
Lovely correlations, thank you so much for the vid!
You're very welcome, Jo! So glad you enjoyed them! :-)
I love Mary poppins the original julie Andrews film and the recent sequel. But I especially loved the Broadway play of mary poppins. There is nothing like a live performance ! There just is something about it !
+Flicks And The City, The dog named Willoughby is also a reference to the Musical where Ms Lark's dog has the same name
Ive notice so many little things just by watching the movie first, her body language, emotions, her words, its crazy
There was also a Knight from bed inobs and broomsticks in roost turvy house
Mary in the new film had two animated birds on her index finger inside the Royal Doulton bowl, as Mary in the old film did when she was singing "A Spoonful of Sugar."
*WHEN YOU WATCH EVEN THOUGH YOU HAVEN'T SEEN MARY POPPINS YET*
LOL, you should go see the movie. But seriously I don't think this video spoiled anything for you, hopefully you can look out for some of these easter eggs and others now!
Why is this literally ME
She didn’t mention supercalifragalisticexpealidocis
In Mary Poppins returns
saw it today. theater was packed. thought it was a great movie.
I saw it yesterday and there were like 15 people LOL
Greg Silverman same! I watched it the day it came out too! 😂
It would have been better IF the original had never been made. You sat there
wishing, what with all the CG and modern easy cheapness, that they could
have done at least a passable job.
@Truben Studios let’s not insult everyone involved with that scene, ok?
*mentions Hamilton*
Well you now have my like
Love you videos!
Here’s an Easter egg, when Mary Poppins arrives with the kite she asks Jack where Bert is
you missed one in the music hall the whale is a call back to an old disney short about a whale that dreamed of being in an opera
Awesome video
Thanks!
The name of one of the lawyer’s was Hamilton that could be a node to Lin-Manuel meriandas musical
At the very end of the movie - when Mary Poppins looks at her reflection in the balloon - is the reflection actually of the Julie Andrews's Mary Poppins?
Saw the movie today with all our kids. Fantastic film!
Zzz Vvv YES! I saw that too!!!
desilexi I want to go watch the film again to check! :-) And because I loved the whole movie, of course! :-)
I think so
