    Thanks for putting this video together and highlighting the difference in the quality and standards of hotel quarantine. As you said, stranded Aussies are arriving from overseas are in trauma. This I can not highlight enough. What we have had to deal with in the past year has many of us suffering from PTSD. I raised this with Senator Kristina Keneally last week in a meeting we had together. I suggested an international Helpline for counselling. I reached out to Beyond Blue who directed me to their website for reading material. I reach out to Life line as well. Your son's room is unacceptable. My daughter and I were quarantined in a hotel in Mumbai the size of 4 single beds. 2 of which were the ones we were sleeping on. We had no window only 4 walls.

      Completely agree. I think there is a resounding ignorance around the impact that restrictions on freedom of movement and being able to return home are having.

      It's the second week that's the hardest.
      But at least after 2 weeks you enter a life of normality, unlike most of the world that's in lockdowns.

    Very interesting Kirstin. Love seeing how it really is. The comparison between rooms is terrible and I was worried for Reuben. I hope that he was able to cope ok.

    We done Melbourne quarantine in May... probably took about a hour to two from landing to arrival at the hotel.

    Thanks for taking the time to make this video! I greatly appreciate it.
    I was thinking, it might help putting the name and location of your son's quarantine hotel in the video description. That way, the hotel management and potential Melbourne politicians who make decisions about this can find your video easier!
    I've got a criminology degree and what your son went through is the lighter form of disciplinary segregation in prisons (sensory deprivation, also referred to as white torture in the extreme form). It's been proven to be harmful to humans in psychology and justice system research, yet is widely ignored by decision-makers.

      Thank you for your input! We emailed the premier of Victoria, several federal ministers, the health department and the hotel strongly voicing our concerns. We did not receive a response from a single person or Organisation. I guess they simply do not care.

    Thanks for this great video. Quick question...when you say they x-rayed all bags, do you mean checked-in and carry-on? Thanks

    • @kirstinwesterman
      @kirstinwesterman  3 роки тому

      Kaj DIA they did not xray my carry on bag. Just suitcases.

    • @Robert-cu9bm
      @Robert-cu9bm 3 роки тому +1

      Australia often x-rays international citizens not so much Aussie citizens.
      This must be because of covid.

      Bri Nicole the more we document the more we can see improvements or create change in areas that may require them. I would have loved to see your video on the USA! That would be a real eye opener I’m sure x

      @@kirstinwesterman I'm not sure what I'd video! Lol we have face masks here but that is about it. If someone tests positive for covid or comes into the country, they are just expected to quarantine themselves for 14 days. This, of course, means that there have been plenty who do not follow this. My town has been shutdown for 2 months with no indoor dining, gyms, theaters, schools, etc. Then shops have a max capacity. So someone is always counting who is coming in. Basically, there is not much to do so you stay home all the time. And with it being winter here, it gets boring fast.

    I hope you see my comment ... were you vaccinated when yyou travelled to Australia? If not, and making a big assumption here (tsk tsk of me) that you would/will choose to be when available, would you feel any "safer" then? For instance, you forget and touch a lift button, but make sure to not touch your mask or face and wash your hands or sanitize as soon as you could .... so you are in less of a cold sweat over this sort of oversight?
    I am making this trip from California USA to Sydney ... after 15 hours of white-knickle flying (no matter how often I do it LOL) .... and another 4-5 hours to get to my room, I will be lucky to be still standing, let alone double-disinfecting. Which I DO think is a very wise move. But exhaustion hits me hard and I am vaccinated. Not a cure I know. But a slight cause for less "fear" but no less caution?

    • @kirstinwesterman
      @kirstinwesterman  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Kate. When I travelled immunizations had not been released. I am a critical care (intensive care) nurse. So well aware and trained in advanced infection control. My hands were constantly sanitized over the trip. I was fully vaccinated as soon as it was available to me. No vaccination does not make me feel any ‘safer’ and should not be an excuse for any slip in infection control. Touching high risk surfaces is very different to touching a mask with sanitized hands that were again sanitized after. This is for the non medical public so tried to make it as simple as possible.

    • @kirstinwesterman
      @kirstinwesterman  3 роки тому +1

      If you contract Covid during your journey your stay in quarantine will be extended immunised or not until you test negative. So keep away from people where you can, sanitize, keep your mask on and the best of luck to you. Safe travels xx

      @@kirstinwesterman - thank you so much for your videos (I am watching them backkwards LOL) I appreciate the heads-up on how it all plays out .... not for the faint of heart but a blessing to get home nonetheless.
      I am aa now retired L&D Nurse, and consequently, was willing and able to be vaccinated early. You are so right - it is not an excuse to let one's guard down. I still live with a maask on that I switch out constantly, sanitize and hand wash ad nauseum. A small price to pay. Again, many thanks and prayers for you, your mum and family xx
