- The Giants have placed third baseman J.D. Davis on waivers, FanSided’s Robert Murray writes (via X). The move comes just a week after San Francisco signed Matt Chapman, which seemed to make Davis an odd man out in the team’s corner infield picture.
With Chapman now at third base, Jorge Soler at DH, and LaMonte Wade Jr. and Wilmer Flores slated as a platoon tandem at first base, there wasn’t much room for Davis to find everyday playing time, making him something of an overqualified bench piece. Chapman’s contract came after months of speculation that he would eventually land in San Francisco to re-unite with his former manager Bob Melvin, so really, trade rumors have been surrounding Davis for much of the offseason.
The waiver-wire move indicates that a trade couldn’t be found, yet that doesn’t mean that there isn’t interest in Davis’ services. It could be that rival clubs weren’t willing to meet whatever asking price Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi was seeking, and were content to wait and see if Davis would just end up available to be claimed. By that same logic, it seems possible that Davis might also clear waivers entirely if no team wants to assume the $6.9MM salary he is owed for the 2024 season, after an arbitration panel ruled in Davis’ favor at a hearing last month.

I agree with you, Erik. I feel really bad for JD… He is a gamer… Being cut, not traded while he is still solid value. Ouch. That guy worked at trying to improve himself opposite of Anthony Rendón. Every interview I’ve seen with him. He comes across as likable standup guy. I hope he lands on his feet somewhere.

There comes a penalty if you take the Giants to arbitration and win. They get rid of you.
This is a slap in the face to the guy who busted his ass this offseason to win the job at 3rd only for the giants to bring in chapman. Not to mention we get panda to. Davis you can tell got pissed when they stabbed him in the back it shows this front office has got there head so far up there ass they don't know what the fuck they are doing.

JD was a symptom of the disease Farhan has brought to the Giants. "Roster depth" is a made up word created to cover the inability to put together a good team. Every team has 26 spots, that's your depth and winning teams find good starters and build a diverse bench that provides: power, contact, speed, defense, and the beck-up catcher.
JD was acquired for nothing and because he hits 18 HRs he deserves a spot on a roster? Those 18 Hrs came with 140 Ks, 240 AVG, and standard defense. If a guy is bringing standard defense, low avg, and high Ks he was expected to bring 35 Hrs with 100 RBIs.
Before opening day a team will sign him for league min and we're on the hook for the 6M.
Like everything else when you try to half-ass something you always end up paying more. So add that 6M to Chapman's signing and the lost draft pick and tell me now the value of the Chappy signing.
Half this off-season has been spent correcting and paying for the the mistakes of last two years of accusations while our peer markets are actually building better and stronger teams.

Melvin wanted Chapman, it is that simple. Davis became expendable, too many RH hitting corner infielders, no one else was going to be moved(save maybe Schmidt being sent down, Flores is too valuable as a utility player to be traded. Wade, being a LH hitter is an entirely different issue. Someone should claim Davis, at least as injury insurance

I'm with you. 100%. Seems like every season we have injury issues ... makes more sense to keep Davis ... much more sense. Nickle and dimin' will not get you to a World Series ... abundant talent and depth will. Frankly Davis is needed because options at third do not seem solid behind Chapman but whatever ...I hope this does not bite us in the ass.
Hopefully he'll find another team that actually wants him to contribute. Its no good to stay where you aren't wanted. Farhan is a strange guy. I think he's very fickle and just looks at numbers all day.
Total disrespect to a good man. Shame on you Giants. You could have found a trade, but to waiver him this late in spring training is bush. Most teams have gotten their lineups pretty much sewn up. I guess the only good point for me is it may help my fav Casey Schmitt stay with the team. You are right, Eric, it is messed up. The Giants are becoming an organization without any soul. That hurts.

It makes sense to cut him. If someone picks him up they’re off the hook and his current contract is honored. He’s surplus to their needs. He isn’t going to be the only surprising cut. Slater? Yaz? The 40 man needs room for younger alternatives and this year is all about change

What was the point of signing chapman if we have to waive davis? Not even sure that is an upgrade. Farhan is in over his head. How did this guy not get fired with Gabe?
There was no place on the roster for him. There are only 13 position players on a 26 man roster. 9 starters and 4 bench guys - backup catcher, Flores/Wade, Yaz/Slater, Matos, Fitzgerald who can play center & middle infield. If JD Davis doesn’t start, he can’t be on the roster. They obviously couldn’t find a trade partner. Now he can find a team on his own. BART will be next.

It will be laughable if JD has a better season than Chapman.
Yeah, it doesn;t feel good, and U would have liked to get something symbolic from the Cubs to add as minor league depth, but the roster crunch is real. If they kept J.D. Davis, they would have had to done one of these:
1. Convince Davis or Flores to go down to AAA (good luck!).
2. Waive Flores
3. Carry only 12 pitcher (with a staring rotation that is already depleated - did you see who they started today - UGH).
4. Have Chapman as your back-up shortstop (despite the fact he has had only 10 innings over 8 seasons at the position in MLB).
5. Dump Wade and carry two right handed 1B'men.
6. Don't carry a forth outfielder.
7. Don't carry a back-up catcher.
Yes, I know the last few would absolutely never happen, but it shows the kind of sacrifice needed to keep Davis. Oh, and Davis kinda sucked in the second half.
We could have used that guy this year.
a bench player should provide one of the following- defense, speed, power, or contact. He has none. He's a high K rate guy who ran into 18 Hrs because he was allowed to play on this team being run like an expansion franchise

You guys got to stop thinking them being a nice guy is relevant. This is all about assembling a winning team,, not about you liking them. Wilmer Flores is a performing veteran, Matt Chapman is a performing veteran. If Conforto doesn’t perform he’s gone.
This is definitely a money move. I don't like it but $7M is quite a bit for a bench player. They better be doing this because they are saving some $ to spend on Snell or Montgomery. That's all I'm saying. BTW guess which Giants 3rd baseman hit MORE home runs, RBIs, Runs and batting average than Matt Chapman last year? JD Davis.

@@Spinach_D If another team claims him the Giants won't have to pay him anything. I think they can get out of the money either way though. I read yesterday on MLB Trade Rumors that because Davis took the Giants to arbitration and didn't settle and then the Giants lost the arbitration hearing that if Davis clears waivers the Giants can still release him and only pay "the prorated portion of his salary." Considering the regular season hasn't even started yet the prorated portion of his salary should be really low. Definitely less than $1M and possibly as low as zero. I don't know how much players get paid for Spring Training but that's all they would have to cover. You should look the article up. It's about JD Davis specifically and on MLBTR. I was surprised but apparently there is a newish rule that allows teams to get out of arbitration contracts with players only under the circumstance that the team loses the arbitration hearing. It appears that Farhan is planning on taking advantage of that rule. I had never heard of that rule before yesterday so I'm guessing it's only a couple years old.

This just seems so dumb. Aside from slapping a guy in the face who gave us a lot last year...how the heck are you not able to find a trade partner for a decent player? This could have been another chance to reinforce the pitching. This is just needlessly burning an asset that had some value.
Not quite sure why you're so up and arms about this. He has no Minor league options left he's north of thirty he Doesn't play outfield and even if he could. There's no room for him out there. We have a defensive stud in Casey. Schmidt and Luciano could play third in emergencies. He can't play first because Flores. And Wade are over there. And Chapman has 2 platinum gloves. He's not just a gold glover so there's no comparison between the two. If he couldn't be traded, he had to be put on waivers. This was as obvious as obvious could be.
Chapman has also hit 24 36 27 27 17 in 5 of his last 6 seasons and he was injured the last year, while being a legendary elite 3rd basemen.
