Denver Zoo Welcomes Two New Rescued Raccoons!

Our resident grizzly girl now shares Harmony Hill with two fellow wild rescuees: raccoons Cashew and Pecan! These charming kit sisters were rescued last year by Sonflower Ranch and Rescue after being found in the wall of a home in Boulder, and would typically be released into the wild. Due to their leucism, a genetic abnormality that causes partial pigment loss, the two raccoons are unlikely to survive in the wild, so Denver Zoo stepped in to give them a good home.
These curious girls like to socialize with keepers, wade in the pool and nap together in their hammock. Pecan is outgoing and confident, and has darker fur than her sister. Cashew tends to be selective about the food she eats, and likes to see if her keepers have treats before looking for food around her habitat. These two are still acclimating to their new habitat, so if they’re not running around exploring, they can likely be found snoozing in a hammock. Cashew and Pecan are such beautiful and busy gals! I’m going “nuts” 🤪🥜for their fur color (Sorry. Couldn’t resist the Dad joke) and can’t wait to see them in person this Spring.
