    Just wanted to say thank you for this video - great job. I lost power yesterday, swapped the battery first, that didn't fix it. Bought a new one as well as a new belt and with the help of your video the whole job only took about 90 minutes. Really appreciate the time you spent making this to help people. Thanks again.

    My car stalled out in the middle of the road during rush hour. I managed to get some help moving it out of the road and onto a side street. I did some online research for a couple of days and determined that it was a bad alternator. I bought a refurbished alternator and this video was extremely helpful in saving me money. Thank you so much!

    This is a great tutorial. I replaced the alternator and serpentine belt on my 2005 Honda Accord Lx after watching. Unscrewing and screwing back on the alternator is easy, use 12mm wrench. Putting the belt back on all the pulleys was a pain, I found a second pair of hands helps....
    Thanks for the video.

    Thanks so much for the excellent video. My battery drained two days ago and I heard a whine that was never there before. I was running the ac on max and charging my phone while driving and I guess that was too much. Went to my local parts store and had it tested and it failed the alternator test. I bought a new one, followed your video, and the swap was so easy. This is probably one of the best tutorial repair videos I've seen on here. Not too wordy but clear and concise. Thanks again!

    I don't know anything about how to work in a car. I'm more into electronic devices. It's Sunday and couldn't find a mechanic or someone that could help me to change the alternator. The best way to learn new things that works for me it's googling stuff. That way I found this video, it took 75 minutes to change it. I'm so proud of myself (:-)
    For me of you its a simple task for me was an achievement. Thanks for this video that taught me how to do it...

    Great Video. Thank You!! My boyfriend used it to change our alternator in just 2 hours. He had just missed his 3rd day at work because of this issue and I was about to miss college classes for the coming week. Leaving us out of work and school and likely losing our house. We did not have enough money to fix this any other way except DIY and without your easy to understand video it may have not happened; certainly not this quickly and painlessly. To viewers ...Watch the small details in the video to i.e which direction he is cranking to take tension off those cables and make sure you have the right tools for the job. Remember you can always buy and return items (from a big corporation like ...) saying they were the wrong ones if you are desperate.

    Thank you! Battery light came on on the way to work today. I suspected the alternator and bought a new one and a serpentine belt for my 2005 Accord. I learned the hard way that a serpentine belt tool is a must as I wasted well over an hour trying to ease the tension without one. Alternator was a beast to get out with AC and power steering lines, but I was able to do it.

  • @asuche03x
    @asuche03x 10 років тому +5

    This was INCREDIBLY helpful. Only comment is that the removal of the battery cable line, around 2:30, was in reality a pain in the a$$. That was probably the most time consuming component. Very little slack in the cable and not much room to maneuver between the alternator and the header. Also, the power steering lines on a 2005 run across the top near the AC lines and interfere with the removal. In this video the line runs down and away (reference 3:40....I had TWO hoses to deal with). I was still able to get the alternator out but it took a bit more work than the video shows/implies. I did move the reservoir and also disconnect the electrical connection at the fan shroud.
    Make sure you have/borrow/get the serpentine belt tool for this. It makes life much easier. Experience replacing the serpentine belt is a plus. 10mm wrench for the battery connection and 12mm socket w/ short extension for the alternator bolt (qty: 3) made this a simple job. P.S. One bolt is on top of the alternator, and two are directly below. All three point towards the front of the vehicle.
    All in all this was a 15-20 minute job or barely 1 beer........depending on how you measure automotive repair work. :)

I had fun doing this, and felt very pretty accomplished as well... I got stuck for a little bit when it came to moving the idler pulley I couldn't really see in the video how that was being done. But I figured it out after some minor frustrations :)

    Great video. have a 2004 TSX and it is exactly the same. I had the opposite problem, you had a shorted diode, I have an open diode. Checked with an O-scope and have like 1.5 V pk-pk ripple. It was still charging, no battery light, but my lights flickered rhytmically. From what I understand my issue would not "fail" a bench test. Anyway, getting ready to replace it, saw your video, and it is great!

I have an 05 acura tsx and I was hearing a whining noise and I was having some wierd electical problems like my navi was resetting while I was driving and my rpm gauge would move when I turned on the lights or when i used my windows. This is a very inspiring video and I actually just changed the alternator with the help of my brother-in-law. The video makes it look very easy but be weary of the fan belt as that sucker is a pain to take off and especially put back on if you do not have a slim style ractchet like he does. You need a long one for leverage otherwise you will get nowhere. Also taking out the alternator is time consuming even if you remove the power steering reservoir and unhook the power to the fan. All in all, if you have the right tools it can be done. If you have a clever brother in law who knows how to work on car and can improvise, you're good to go. This by the way is a great video and inspirational.
    roadragecustoms: What kind of ratchet did you use, brand? I have craftsman ratchet and socket and could not it in. We ended up using two wrenches, one 14mm and another as the leverage, we finally got it to work. Would appreciate a reply roadragecustoms, thank you!

    The radio code on that vehicle was on a sticker in the glove box. The sticker had the radio code and the serial number on it. I believe I pressed the 'on' button and the unit said "code." I used the radio presets to punch in the code and the radio started working. Some Honda/Acura vehicles have the sticker in different locations: door jamb, strut tower, card with owner's manual, etc. If you don't have the radio code you can remove the radio and get the serial number. Call parts dept for code.

    My 2006 Pilot EX-L did this the other day with the battery light, and the alternator was making the same whining sound as in this accord. Either way I will be changing both of those out this week.

    @Nightwing690 The pulley isn't supposed to be able to spin independently of the rest of the alternator internals. If the pulley won't spin, something inside is seized. Replacing the pulley wouldn't help unless the pulley has been hit with something & is warped so bad that it is hitting the case. It sounds like you need an alternator.

  • @roadragecustoms
    @roadragecustoms 14 років тому

    @Rockford91Fosgate Some high output alternators are bigger alternators. Some just have a smaller pulley to make them spin faster. It isn't uncommon to run multiple alternators to keep up with the stereo system. If you buy a high output alternator that isn't made for a specific car & try to put it in something it's not made for, you will need to be really good at fabrication & machining brackets. Also, most anything you change from stock will cause the required belt size to change too.

    Great work. I had no problem following your lead. I have a new battery and based on the test results, the alternator was bad or so I would assumed. My newly installed alternator had the same results as the replaced alternator. Do you have any direction for testing this ELD (Electronic load detecting unit)?

    The Intrigue has a fusible link in the large cable between the alternator and the positive jump start stud. There is a generator fuse in the underhood fuse box. If the alternator test good, meaning it is charging, then the fuses are good. Does the car restart after it stalls? Does it have to be jump started?

  • @roadragecustoms
    @roadragecustoms 14 років тому

    @iftikhar0005 I don't recall any noise from that old alternator. If your alternator is noisy, but charging fine, and you are sure you don't have any related problems, you can replace it to make the noise go away. It may depend on how bad the noise is. Just make sure the new part is high quality enough to not make noise. Of course you could rebuild it or replace bearings as needed if parts are available. There are also alternator shops that can repair them for you.

    @rotcataergeht Check the "L" terminal on the alternator. Disconnect the wire(s) as needed to get the white & blue wire off the alternator. Key on, engine off, if light blinks, problem is in wiring (short to ground) between alternator & batt bulb. If light is off, problem is most likely in alternator. Reconnect connector & disconnect / temporarily cut (make it repairable) white & blue wire. Start engine. Check for ground at L terminal. Pulsing ground @ L terminal will make bulb flash.

    I have an 03 Honda Accord. I have had the starter, egnition switch, and battery changed so far and am still running into starting issues. At times my car will not start and requires a jump from another car to get going. I have taken my car to have the battery, alternator, and starter checked at auto parts stores. I have also taken it to the Honda dealership where I bought it and everything checks out fine. No one knows why my car has starting issues. I have read some blogs and other websites that say it could be a faulty alternator even though it checks out fine. Do you think this could be the case? Some have said that it could also be the nuetral safety switch.

    @rotcataergeht Give me some more info & I'll try to help. Is it 13.4 constant, or up to 13.4? Is it @ idle, or higher RPM when it is 13.4? Is it 13.4 on the gauge, or with a multimeter? If you are using a multimeter, check in a few places, like at the battery, at the alternator, at the fuse box, etc. Is only the battery light on, or are other lights on, like brake, etc? Do you have a massive aftermarket sound system? What kind of car is it?
