I’m sorry that damage did not happen during shipping. That damage occurred at cgc, they don’t care if they damage our books. They are not personally vested in them.
Definitely going to have to get better about taking pics when I'm sending stuff in. My last submission I personally sent in came back all 9.8's and one 9.6, of course with no notes, I felt that cover was more solid than some of the 9.8's before I sent it.
I sent in a minty copy of Clone Wars 1. I looked it over like a hawk and saw nothing wrong with it. It came back at a 9.2. I have no idea how. I took the slab to my lcs and he even said there's absolutely no way that's a 9.2 told me if it was him he'd 100% Crack and resend it that the grader was having a bad day or something. I've looked it over so many times and still can't see anything wrong with it. I'm undecided on cracking it
I also believe when you send modern from 2010-2020 along with modern from 1980-1990 they are much harsher on the older books bc they don’t look as nice as the newer shiny books. I blame this on new graders without enough experience.
Well this vid was a glass case of emotion. The highs of the collab with Dell'Otto (congrats!) and your powerhouse of a comic box offering and then the pains of the other stuff we don't have to talk about. But as always, thank you for taking us through the journey in showing us the highs and lows. I've only sent a few comics for grading and your vids have helped in anticipating/accepting a grade and making the judgement call on what to look for before even considering to submit🤙
same thing happened with yellow labels. 5 books came back with bottom corner bends... like these were dropped at CGC and they wont take responsibility.
interesting how finger bends and slight variance can happen either in shipping or at CGC. Good advice to take pics of front and back. This channel rocks.
Out of curiosity, how long are you cold pressing these? I’ve had issues with books reverting if I left books in the wet bath too long or cold press not long enough. I had an issue with my last submission where they rejected half the 25 pre screen and they look damn near perfect.
Would you recommend sending in a few books or 25 at a time if you could afford it? I’m wanting to send in some SIKTC that I have. Thanks for the tips on the pics of book before sending them in.
That mystery box is 🔥. And it absolutely sucks that they would expect you to take pictures of every single submission with the amount you run through them every year....
That Dell’Otto is ABSOLUTE 🔥 FIRE!!! Congratulations again on securing it my friend 👏👏👏 Wow you definitely had some serious mishandling of your books somewhere along the way because I know you have a keen eye for what passes as a 9.8 and you would have not sent them in on a prescreen in that condition. Way to keep your composure at the end when most of us would have lost it.
What a fine line we walk in this hobby. That dang 9.8 is such a dangly carrot that we just can't resist, yet it's so easy (and frustrating) to have our books deemed "less than" for seemingly nebulous reasons.
Man, it’s really informative watching you critique your rejected books. Great video, even though it sucks to get that many rejects. Most lessons learned aren’t free of cost.
I'm waiting on getting my second submission to CGC back.🤞🤞🤞. Do you recommend sending in comics you want to sell to get graded? Loaded question, but I'm trying to get into selling more.
I received my books back from cgc this week and I didn’t prescreen. I received books with new spine ticks and finger bends they didn’t have going in. I have all the video and pics backing up that statement as I film and take photos of my press and clean process before I send them in. So it’s very possible cgc gave you those new indents and ticks causing those books to be rejected.
You should take the time for photos on your next prescreen submission, even if its just that one batch. It would be super interesting to see how that turns out. When i sent in my books for the alex ross private signing, i used fullbacks to help with any of the mishandling i would expect to occur at cgc.
Awesome video Bry but man really sucks they rejected and damaged some of your books. Some really cool takeaways was thinking of doing a 9.8 or 9.0 pre-screen for some tlou books. Now leaning more towards playing it safe with the 9.0 prescreen.
I don’t use Fed-Ex anymore at all; I switched my CGC account to ship through UPS. Fed-Ex here is horrible; I once had them throw a package over my fence like a football.
My guess is that reversion happened with most of those books with tics and bends. The printing defects were likely always there and were easily missed. Because of reversion, I now set my cleaned and pressed books aside for a month and then re-examine them one more time before submitting. It is an extra step and delays the submission but helps catch reversion. Rates of reversion are likely affected by hard to control factors such as humidity and temperature. I think reversion rates have increased with all the crazy weather we have had in Cali. I can’t prove it. Would need to get Swagglehsus on the case to come up with some charts and graphs on reversion rates crossed referenced to weather conditions. As always, super educational and fun video Bry! Keep ‘em coming.❤
Like your walk through. As of recent I have yet to see any consistency on how CGC grades. I have gotten some of the worst grades over the last 6 months than I have in the 8+ years I have been submitting books. Most of these books were press by cgc. I have seen other vendors submitted books get some of the crazy 9.8 grades even with multiple spine ticks. They were even surprise by the results.
Need some advice about grading. I have a key comic that is probably a 9.6 right now. And 9.8 once its pressed. However, it was manufactured with only 1 staple. Would this increase the value or decrease the value? It doesn't have the staple holes thats how I know it came off the press that way. Any advice?
I believe it would get a qualified label and be worth less…not 100% sure on the label color but I think it’s an undesirable defect…weird how that works
@jerryunderwood6130 thats unfortunate. I say give it a higher grade. Could u imagine a comic with one staples being in a 9.8 condition? Its like a runner with a broken leg beaten Usan Bolt in a race! Lol
I recently bought a collection and will be submitting my first set of books to cgc! Wolverine number 8 newsstand and the amazing Spider-Man 316. Both are very clean copies and I'm excited to see what the grades are and compared to what I think they will be.
I actually just submitted ten books to CGC today but I did not apply the pre-screen. I've never used the pre-screen service in fact but I am thinking I should start applying it especially since there is no minimum limit now. I pressed and dry cleaned all ten books so now stressing if all the books except one doesn't come back a 9.8.
I don't think you can screen for less than 25 books submissions. The only time I sweat it is when it's obvious that a 9.6 isn't worth it. For what I'm submitting though, I'm still going to come out ahead....just not as much.
My take away from your submission is that allowable defects for a 9.8 is not considered by the grader. That book has to be perfect for a 9.8. It is unfortunate you did not get the grades you were hoping for. The grading inconsistency of the new CGC graders drives my crazy.
If you pre-screen for a 9.8 can you get higher than that. Same for if you pre screen 9.6 and they believe it’s a 9.8 can they give you that even though you did 9.6?
What time period do you think is necessary after a pressing to determine whether or not a comic has reverted? Curious about this because you're not the first to mention this issue...
I feel like some of these graders are on a power trip. Either that or there is a "quota" to make people press and resubmit. CGC makes even more money rejecting and having you resubmit.
I had a slabb come back this spring as an 8.5 purple lable. Defenders #4. Pulled grader notes which said finger nail dents back cover n color touch 3 spots front cover. I'm original owner and remember buying it in my youth from newsstand. I suspect cgc is using ai to help with grading.
On the positive side, CGC has been much faster lately. I sent in 25 books last week and they are already in QC. I did a 9.6 prescreen, cause they still fetch a decent price. I couldn't handle paying for all of those rejects.
9.6 pre-screen seems to be the way to go to avoid excessive disappointment. The high 9.8 rejection rate seems to be rampant on You Tube these days. This is the third video with similar poor results I've watched in the past week or so.
@@markvandervlist8967my order is arriving today. 13 9.8. 8 9.6. 4 rejects. 9.6 prescreen works for me. That could have been 11 rejects, and I'd be paying $99 for nothing
