    You have just shared my "secret gem". Anyway I have been doing this hike for 50 years and my dad introduced me and my brothers. Some of the beams of the San Gabriel Mission were also supposed to have been from this canyon too. Gold was mined from the upper canyon into the mid part of the last century without looking it up the exact years. Black Bears are not native to the San Gabriels, they are transplants from the last century from the sierras and are decedents of the bad bears from Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. They were planted to replace the California Grizzly which was hunted to extinction. Due to how busy Millard is on most weekends now, I now come up the front-south side of Sunset Ridge via Chaney Trail trail and the Altadena Crest trail which makes it a much longer hike. There are 3 more trail heads this way, and your map shows 2 of them. The 3 are: North Sunset Ridge (street or road), West Loma Alta, and finally my favorite Alzada which that trail head is not on your map. All three of these I would NOT recommend during the hottest months of the year because they are exposed and face the south with next to no shade. Take care and for this trail, because I do it 6 to 12 times a year I will give you an update if something changes. Thanks again and good video.

      Awesome, thank you for the intel - I didn't know about Alzada - will have to check it out once all this craziness settles down. Millard and Dawn mine were some of my first hikes when I came out west and I try and get back there at least once a year. It's amazing, the more time I spend in ANF, the more so much of it looks different and unique based on the location. Didn't know that the black bears were not native though, very interesting. Thanks again for the great comment!

      @@Hikingguy Do you know about the author "John Robinson"? He passed away recently, but he wrote a bunch of books about history and hiking in Southern California, and large portion of the information I have originally gotten over my lifetime about the mountains here in So Cal is from him. When you do your hikes, videos, still photos and written descriptions, I really am impressed that you give some background of the area which I find more accurate and a cut above most others. Take care, stay safe and keep doing video and thank you for your past videos, I have used them a couple of times to scout and recon hikes that I actually went on and will continue to use them when I go to new places.

      Yea it's a fun little one, especially if you're in the area. You can also do a longer hike up to Echo Mtn / Inspiration Point from here too.

      @Hikingguy  4 роки тому +1

      Yea, good way to describe it, it def feels more woodsy than most of ANF

      @@Hikingguy I am hoping that the National Forests (Angeles, San Bernardino, Cleveland, Los Padres) will stay open for now during the virus debacle. I know that the rec areas and campgrounds, facilities are closed, but am hopeful that forest land will still be open for trail and off-trail travel. I am planning on doing some more remote off-trail hiking later this week and maybe also on the weekend, so I can have some time in nature and still be socially distant!! I have not been out on any hikes in the last 2 months, and hope to do so before the government issues a total quarantine (if they do so). I am tired of exploring the great indoors LOL!!

      @@brianpowell5082 Ha - yea, I think the trails are open and if you're off the beaten path you're okay. My only advice would be to make sure you prep and don't have to call SAR, they're stretched thin already.

    How about you move to Alaska for a few summers and map all the hikes you can do out of the South Central part of the state??

      Ha man I'd love to - I've got a buddy in Homer and have been to Sitka, Kodiak, Juneau, etc. years ago (buddies in USCG) - on my list to get back up there at some point...

      I've only been on the trails within 0-10 minutes of home, and there are a lot of people out. I've been heading out at off-peak times to avoid the crowds.

      @Hikingguy I stay away from places were parking is too isolated. Especially these days.
      Was gonna go on Wednesday to Millard canyon and on the way over there plans changed.
      I will go next week.
      Thanks for replying.

      Yes you need an Adventure Pass or Parks Pass (which is a better value IMO)
