    Such a great selection. I love Patrick Leigh Fermour and William Dalrymple. Madam Bovary is on my summer reading list too. Great video 😊

      Thank you, Debs! I'm looking forward to reading something by William Dalrymple - I really enjoy listening to his podcast.

    I really liked The Leopard and I think you will enjoy it too. It gives you a lot to think about.
    If you are reading Madame Bovary, which I also loved, please check out the trial Flaubert had to face for it. It's fascinating and adds an additional layer to the story. I don't know about the English edition, but in the German one, it was added as an epilogue to the book.

      Unfortunately, my edition didn't have anything about the trial in it. That's certainly something I'll have to seek out!

    This is a great list. I'm particularly curious to hear more about the Eco book - it sounds fascinating. I've loved his fiction.

      I've started is now -- the subtitle "Essays on Everything" fits really well. There's stuff in here about holy relics, literary depictions of cheese, the symbolism of fire... and most of the time it makes very entertaining reading too!

    Some great book choices there Aaron. Best wishes with what you choose to read. I hope you get some great stories. I'm currently up to page 805 with the Count of Monte Cristo. Still got some way to go. Happy reading.

      Thank you, Summer! What sort of things do you have planned for this summer?

      I’m halfway through The Fountainhead by Rand and really enjoying it. James by Percival Everett, Wool by Hugh Howey and The Book of Dirt by Bram Presser. I’m really hoping to get to The Path between the seas by McCullough. I’m sure I’ll throw in some light fun reads too. 😊

    Hi Aaron. That's quite a list that you have for the summer! I've read Madame Bovary at least twice, but it's been a long time. I don't think you will be disappointed by it. It's a great novel. I also love Tender Is the Night, but The Great Gatsby is still my favorite of all of Fitzgerald's works. It may have more to do with when I first read it and the incredible impact it had on me at that time. It's also a novel that I used to love to teach. I am wondering if you're read Colm Toibin's The Magician? It's his novel about Thomas Mann. (He wrote a similar type of novel years ago, The Master, about the life of Henry James.) It's an odd genre--I'm not even sure what you'd call it--fictionalized accounts of the lives of novelists. But I did find both of Toibin's novels on novelists to be really interesting. I hope you're doing well. I'm still hearing that persistent cold in your videos. Take care.

      I'm really looking forward to comparing Tender is the Night with Gatsby once I've finished. It may warrant a reread of Gatsby too! I haven't read anything by Toibin yet, but I'm really intrigued by both The Master and The Magician. I can remember seeing someone reading The Master on the train a while ago. I thought about asking him what he thought of it, but decided to let him enjoy his reading time instead. ☺

      @@aaronfacerI really like Toibin. I’ve read a bunch of his novels set in Ireland-and there’s one coming out here any day now. But I think his fiction about novelists is also really interesting in a very different way. I think you might be intrigued too.

    I love the title _Inventing the Enemy_ but I’m not sure how universal the passage you read can be said to be(?). I’ve been wanting to tackle _Tender_ too. Good reading!

    • @aaronfacer
      @aaronfacer  4 місяці тому +1

      Yeah, it's probably not all that Universal -- in the opening of the essay, he's trying to see if Italy really has any long-standing enemies (excepting any in-fighting). Although it seems like the idea of Othering sounds like a slightly less extreme version of the same phenomenon. And most of his examples as the essay goes on are historical anyway. But, in the end, it is a very intriguing title!

      Thanks, Allen! Time of Gifts is really good -- it's a beautiful portrait of the Europe that was lost after WW2.
