Thankyou for treating the song with the reverence it deserves and letting it play all the way through without interruptions. Yes Judy Collins did do a version of it but the song is Sandy’s written at a very early age. This version is the definitve version of the song and I don’t believe anyone else can better it. Richard Thompson who provided sympathetic and subtle guitar accompaniment is in his own right a great songwriter and one of the World’s best guitarist’s.
Sandy Denny wrote it. There are several versions by her with the Strawbs. She also sang on the Battle of Evermore by Led Zeppelin. Richard Thompson still tours. Has some wonderful albums of his own and with Linda his now ex wife. Check his stuff out. You can’t go wrong with the early British Folk Rock such as Fairport Convention, Steel Eye Span and Pentangel. The work is fantastic.
The electric guitar was Richard Thompson, and if you liked that you really should check out his solo work and with his (then) wife Linda - 1952 Vincent Black Lightning, Beeswing, Dimming of the Day, I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight, Wheel of Death, Shoot Out the Lights, Tear-stained Letter...
I first heard it by Judy Collins. Then someone turned me on to Matty Groves, so I discovered Fairport Convention. Then I realized this was Sandy's song. Been in love with this version ever since. Though, I did play Judy's cover at my mom's funeral. Thanks for the reaction!
Love Fairport! Their drummer on this track (Martin Lamble) lived a stone's throw away. "Unhalfbricking" came from a word game the band had been playing where you add letters to a word while trying not to fully complete it. The silly result sounded like a good, jokey title! 😃
Love the couple of albums with Sandy Denny and Fairport. The had a few great musicians, but at the time, Richard Thompson, Sandy Denny, and Dave Swarbrick were brilliant - though I think Swarbrick probably joined for the next album.
Hey Greg those mid terms are a beeatch. I love this song, so beautiful. Sandy died not long after this I believe. Tragic; Sandy Denny. Who knows where the time goes? I still don't know.
It was such an awful election with so much money spent. It was worse for me in Oklahoma since my county and only two others voted Democratic. I hear that the runoff for Senate in Georgia may cost @ 200 million dollars for ads and such. Good god, I can think of a lot of ways 200 mil might be spent in a state with such rural poverty as Georgia. If you didn't see it, this may appeal to your sense of humor. ua-cam.com/video/2R4fk_6IFq8/v-deo.html
0@@deepcutsreactions7774 Hey Greg. I feel for you, and my own country which is in a crisis state itself atm. What a huge amount of money, as a Socialist myself (NO NOT A COMMUNIST! NOT!!) that amount is positively vomit inducing. What a waste, on ads? Good Lord. Am in the middle of a thing but will get back to you about your video asap. x
@@deepcutsreactions7774 I never checked my county results, but since I'm a Normanite, it sounds like we voted Blue! WooHoo!!!!! like it makes a difference with 1/3 statewide Blue ;-/ oh well, not like I'm not used to it - I moved here 23 yrs ago and its been like this for 20 of those years.
If you liked this you are opening a door to a whole new world of discovery. Of course, Sandy wrote the song but Judy Collins made it a hit. Frankly, I like Sandy's demo versions of the song better. They are more raw and pure. Beside her solo works, check her work with the Strawbs, Fairport Convention, and Fotheringay. Yes, Richard Thompson's guitar work has always been highly regarded. He is well worth checking out as well. He has gone through a number of stages with his music and is constantly exploring new expressions through music. Thompson's Henry the Human Fly and Shoot Out the Lights (with wife Linda) are regarded as two of his best albums. He did a tour called 1000 Years of Music, where he demonstrated how popular music changed through the centuries. He ended it with a "crass modern pop song" that he jokingly said had roots in a 14th Century court song - Brittany Spears's Oops, I Did It Again. LOL!!! And unbelievably, he made it sound good! Only Richard Thompson could pull that off.
Hey I'm an Okie too! voted for the Lady Gov who lost ;-/. Sandy Denny wrote that in Highschool, fairly sure it was the first song she wrote. man many covers done on it Nanci Griffith did one as did Kate Wolf. Sandy never made it big in America ;-( she should have been as big as Janis Joplin! I only discovered her in 2000 via the internet newsgroup binaries. I'm never heard of her before that time and I'm in my 50's now so grew up with a lot of 70's rock - she never got radioplay here in America! I just showed up here a few minutes ago and see you have Judee Sill (another fairly unknown, but great! - check out her "The Kiss" and "The Donor" you got Lara Nyro even! (Jackson Browne's girlfriend in the late 60s), and Nanci Griffith "light beyond these woods Mary Margret" "love at the five and dime" are great songs Hell you even have Sara Jaro(sp)!!!!!! I'm impressed Sir! check out Kate Wolf "across the great divide" and this utterly forgotten gal Wendy Waldman "mad mad me" "cold back on me" "living is good" "is he coming at all" oh and a Rock Group that I discovered only last year - another one that was big in England and never made it here: Renaissance "Scheherazade" "can you understand" good luck with your channel Sir! Slava Oklahoma!
Her death is kind of blamed on her mother for not calling for medical assistance after Sandy fell down the stairs - embarassed by her use of alcohol. I can't confirm that's true, but it is what some believe.
@@michaelwebster8389 Intersesting story - never heard that. just note that she live a few moths afterward -so, recovered from the fall, but the anurysm(sp) from it was a ticking time bomb. so there was nothing anyone could do after tha fall basically (outside of an x-ray/etc........and an operation to prevent post accisdent anryism - and of course in the real world - if you are up and waling after a fall its a-ok for your - so who know when (where) the time goes (is up) - sorry - in poor taste, but you just don't know when the times up. If I fell down some stairs, and woke up the next day I'd assume I was ok - most times it is ok, but sometimes its not, sadly.
Unhalfbricking is a made up word by the group when they were playing a game, similar to scrabble. I believe they were either waiting to go on stage or taking a break when rehearsing.
Amazing vocals by Sandy Denny who actually wrote this song. Sandy sadly passed away aged 31.

Sandy is one of the finest singers to come out of the UK.... Sadly she is overlooked, but us who know....... know!
The late great Sandy .........We all love her ..beautiful ..we all miss her ..Your fickle friends are leaving ....R.I.P.

so good.....can easily become something you hear in your own head just before sleep.
Wonderful tune! My favourite song from Sandy Denny is "The Sea" by Fotheringay (Her band after she left Fairport Convention).

Swarb guested on this album (although not this track) and joined for the next, the seminal "Liege and Lief".

The drummer here, Martin, died soon after this recording when the band were involved in a road crash. 😟

Shee wrote the song !!!!!!!!!!!!
My favorite of theirs/hers. Another one that's been covered by lots of people-all of which are pretty good. At least the ones I've heard.
Sgoinneal 🏴😮💕
Thanks, glad you let it play instead of constantly pausing it like some reaction vids. Not heard this so thanks for introducing it.
I think I get away with it 'cause I'm so small. My thinking is who the hell wants to listen to me gab. The music's the important thing.
Matty Groves, Tam Linn, Sailors Life you may like, also Sandy sang on led Zeppelin's battle of evermore.

She died very young - around 30 or 31 in 1978.
I think that is Sandy's parents on the cover; he was a vicar I believe?

@@gaffo7836 I thought it was only a day or two before she took a turn for the worse. Will have to checkout the story again.
Judy Collins covered did it but it cant touch Denny verison!
No it's a Fairport song I think. They were a great band. Richard Thompson on guitar.
