Know I am late to the party but just getting back into ham radio, and had a chance for a 718 but decided on this rig. I appreciate the post since it makes much more sense than the manual! Great information, will have to sit and watch again in front of the radio. Thank you so much! K8MFK
Hi Very helpful video, Just ordered my IC-7300 with handle and a nifty manual on 1-25-2019, so I have a lot to learn. First new radio in many many years. Keep the videos coming as they are very informative and maybe I won't need to read the manual, lol. As for the comments on tuning on Receive. I have always tuned on receive if I wasn't getting a clear signal. Sometimes it helps. I have an external manual tuner ATR-30 a bit of over kill for just 100 watts but it is left over from my amplifier days and is just to good of a tuner to sell for $300. The video does a great job explaining the different signals on waterfall. Anyway when I get my new IC-7300 in a few days I will get it set up and come back and watch this video again and go through the steps with you. 73 Thanks again Robert
Totally appreciate the spectrum scope advice! Now the scope is exactly the way I like it. There were some additional configuration changes required to match your scope config but luckily, I extracted those details from your screen settings. Thank you very much!
Great video, you have a new subber, Thumbs up! That RCA Antenna Rotor, I have one for my TV antenna and when the wind blows hard, the gears slip and the antenna turns. Its not worth the money I paid for it. Yep a bit over a hundred bucks.
Man I’m trying real hard to stop myself from buying the 7300. They have it in stock and $100 rebate for total cost of $1000. Just not sure I want to do HF at all and if I want mobile HF or base station. Mobile HF seems like a pain in the butt but I have moved over 70 times in my life and a base station doesn’t seem like the best idea. Still not even sure I want to HF! Having good fun with the XTM-400XDR you talked me into, though!
56:00 its called 'trunking'...but still get more use out of my K-Pro pong just waiting for the new Atari 2600 to come out next year but happy to have my Coleeco head-to-head football...
Wow, this video is making my first HF radio selection difficult. I am not too interested in contests or digital modes at the moment. Current plan is to operate mostly portable outside of the house on a deck. At under $500 the Alinco DX SR8T seemed like a reasonable choice just to get on the air. However, your discussion on receive filtering is having me reconsidering the options. Now I have something else to prove to wifey that “I need”. Thanks, friend 😙
ic-7300 seems like such a nice hi-fi white noise generator just like an AM radio of years ago...my question is; do you or anyone actually use it for two-way/bi-directional communication?...i noticed you talking to yourself at 45:00. then at 46:46 you confirm that you only have one side of the conversation...its kinda funny...
At the 50 minute mark you blew past the RX EQ and LPF/HPF settings saying you dont use them.. Did you ever go back and choose? You can only use the EQ or the Filters not both at the same time. I chose the filters with 200-2000....What say you?
Hey sorry for the dumb questions all the time but I am new to ham radio. I am suppose to be getting the ICOM 7300. Referring to the 20:29 mark of this video, I do have concerns about all the research I have been reading about and what you are saying about the emergency tuner in terms of being by or next to the antenna during transmission. Does this pretty much mean the coax cable connected to the radio cannot be near anyone when transmitting? I will be running the coax into my house and if there are some potential dangers of the coax carrying a signal so strong that I cant be near it when transmitting then that would be a concern for me. Also, I have extremely limited space outside for an antenna so I will be using possibly an End Fed Antenna which is another concern that when I am transmitting, the end fed antenna will be outside and some children in the neighborhood may touch it while I am transmitting as part of the antenna may be lower than the other end of the antenna. Will that put them at risk if they did touch the antenna while I was transmitting? Again sorry for all the dumb questions. I am so completely new to this. Thanks
Dear Captain HRCC (Josh), all the way from Tennessee- THANK YOU! I have only one question, as I was already fixated on the IC-7300: is there a vendor that you’d recommend over the others, for this radio? Especially, is there one that supports this channel, and where the price and after-sale-support is (nearly) as good as others? Your answer will greatly influence the purchase I plan to make in the next weeks. Again, thank you for your excellent explanations and interesting subjects.
I get those lines too 7300. How do ya get rid of them? :( I only have antennas in my apartment cause I can't have anything outside or the roof. I get them on my RSPdx SDR Radio too :(
@@HamRadioCrashCourse I've tuned up right on top of people I couldn't even hear. When done tuning, they were S1 or S2. I don't know if it is the fact I am using an external tuner and maybe it is so far out from tuning in another band on my 20m dipole.
So the general theory is that the tuner, in your case external is creating the impedance match for the antenna. Without it the antenna would not resonate with the feedline/radio. The general thought is that there might be a feed line mismatch, but the actual antenna, its receive characteristics remain unchanged by the tuning.
WOW, I actually learned 1 thing about 1 of the settings without resorting to reading the manual lol Hope one day we can have QSO on 75M or 40M with you! 73 N8AUM
Can anyone tell me if the mars frequency modification can still be performed on the current 2023 US model IC-7300 ? I just received my tech license and trying to decide what to buy?
Josh, I'm wondering why you consider this radio as entry level? It looked pretty advanced to me.. (Keep in mind I have only been a tech for a year). Would this radio be something I could grow into as a General? Thanks
Picked up a 7300 to augment my old Icom 706 for POTA activations. The 7300 will probably supplant the 706. While the 706 is still a great radio it is 30 year old technology and lacks a few things like built in voice and CW keyers.
WAY, WAY too many adds have be inserted into this video. Screws up continuity of the video. It's an informative vid but I'm shirking knowing another add is coming.
This is not an entry level radio. That would be a baofeng or a IC-718, FT-450, or a Xiegu G-90. This is an intermediate level radio that is technically superior to even many higher level radios in the past. Its quite discouraging to tell new comers to the hobby that they will need about $1500+ for a radio, power supply, antenna, etc, just for entry level.
Im new to HAM. Taking my tech exam next month. Ill first be on my 10m mobile setup. And ill probably throw a HT in the bag aswell. But this radio will be my first base station when that day comes, will also push me to earn my general. Via youtube and a elmer anything can be learned.
5 years ago but with that hat and glasses you could totally pull off a Clark kent in public. Not implying your superman. Super radio man maybe lol. But I suppose we all know you by your voice alone by now. But might be a fun experiment at the next ham fest. Hat, glasses, a shave see how long before anyone notices its you.
What Hurricane net are you having trouble with. There is a DMR Hurricane net, some HF, VHF-UHF nets. Can you talk to WX4NHC? It is not on the air much. I did a video on building a $1,000 shack which includes lower supplies and antennas. You might want to take a look.
Ham Radio Crash Course That’s perfect. Thx. 73. Mark
giddy up. I am buying one of these in a month and this is going to come in very useful. thanks!

Just purchased one and starting the learning curve..🤔 WG7D.
Very helpfull guidance! Thanks Josh!
Know you said tuning does not help on RX but I can tell you that if I tune up with my external LDG, it will make a huge difference on RX.
Interesting, why do you think it improves the RX?

@@RichardDePas so you're one of those guys that tunes right on top of ongoing QSOs.
@@modex20 Not intentionally of course. I listen first and if nothing is heard, I tune up.
Super helpful. Too bad there isn't a way to share config settings ;) Love these videos - very paractical/helpful!
Hi yes tuning helps RX , thats why some radios have preselect function and there are ATU's for recievers.
Did you intentionally wear a Yaesu Radio hat while talking about the ICOM 7300?
I support all the brands.
Hihi I also noticed it...;)
Would you still recommend this radio as a first HF rig?
Yep! But there other good options out there too.

Can you do SSTV with EasyPal and IC-7300?
ICom 7300 : When you transmit there is a wave form scope next to the marker only when transmiting
How do you get that Anyone know .
Can anyone tell me if the mars frequency modification can still be performed on the current 2023 US model IC-7300 ?
I just received my tech license and trying to decide what to buy?
I frankly do not know. Further, with a technician license, you don't need a MARs moded HF radio.
Amazon affiliate link to the glasses?
I think that beer is a Guinness, is that right??? I want one of these radios, thank good video....
WHY does ICOM charge an extra $120. for the power supply.
Go to Field Day in June. Get some time on the air!
Done waching the streams! And sorry if i'm late
I really want this radio.
Josh, I'm wondering why you consider this radio as entry level? It looked pretty advanced to me.. (Keep in mind I have only been a tech for a year). Would this radio be something I could grow into as a General? Thanks
It’s an entry “HF” radio. Yes indeed. It’s something a General would grow into.
can you do a winlink video with this radio?
yes
@@HamRadioCrashCourse cool, I have one and live in Puerto Rico and want to be able to comunicate with my non ham family.
Notch filter should be used with the audio display; NOT the waterfall. With the Audio scope you can "see" the position of the notch.
My IC 7300 stopped transmitting a month ago. Very unhappy.
Who else thinks of "the Empire strikes back" when he tunes towards and away from a station?

Wow! Thanks for doing something, I really had problems with the flow of a great video. Didn't mean to hassle but thought it was worth mentioning.
I’ve tried to use the discount code for signal stuff and it says the code expired, just thought I would let you know.
Yes, I thought I mentioned it on the stream where I reviewed the antennas, it was only good for a week.
