As much as it pains me to admit it as a hi-fi enthusiast since I was in my early teens AND having owned my current dual head Technics since the mid 90s, I have never tried to fathom out how to use the BIAS control. Until tonight. I've never heard such improved recordings on this machine. Wish UA-cam was about thirty years ago.
I actually found out that my Sony TC-K600es' BIAS is way off set. I knew it was off, but it is more then I anticipated. I'll try taking it apart and calibrate it
If it comes into adjustment with the external adjustment controls it may not be worth getting inside. I have found these things are often best left alone just for a small thing.
If you use a good tape and do the internal adjustment with the adjuster set to mid way you should be able to pull it in. At least you have an Idea what the problem is. Good Kuck. Let ne know how you get on.
Hey Gary! Hope your weeks going well! I just wanted to ask, sorry if this is a stupid question, say I’m recording a playlist onto cassette, do I need to set the bias for every song, or can I set it once and it’s fine for the whole tape?
It is not stupid question. NO ,once you set it for the tape it is correct for the whole secession. It should be good for any other tapes of the same type ( make series. eg TDK D). Enjoy.
Great video. But i thought the tones to be more accurate must be at -10 db. But if the final recording is close to the source i' ll give it a try. Thanks.
I went for the real world levels, it was to show the effect rather than absolute rules. As most people rec at 0db peaks, this way you get the best allround results . If you watch some of my tape reviews the tape characteristics vary so much this way allows for the differences.
A maioria das musicas , o conteúdo dos agudos nao atinge 0dB num RTA ou spectrum Então um tape deck que atinja seus 18 20khz em -20dB tera uma performance musical muito excelente
google translate: In most music, the treble content does not reach 0dB on an RTA or spectrum So a tape deck that reaches 18-20kHz at -20dB will have a very excellent musical performance.. My Response. Correct. The Bias tweak is only needed to fine-tune the deck to the tape. Minha resposta. Correto. O ajuste Bias só é necessário para ajustar o deck à fita.
Yes it does, depending on your machine but if you go too high a frequency you will not really be able to adjust it because it will be too peaky. the low needs to be low enough to be stable and peaky. I used the 2 frequency's because they were stable. They would work on any deck or Tape.
Good Question. It would be best if you got to the limits of the tape. If you do the upper limit the recorder can reproduce. You can see what effect the changes have-the same for the Low frequency. A VU of 0 is as good as any; it gives you a chance to see signals that otherwise would be lost in the noise. Allowing you to get them.
hi i have wavelab 6 it's very the same the thing is it works to ways i can see whay tone are as well i had yes when cool edit was around works ace great you are using older decks the kind we would have the come back man is not real life tony one talks alot of something
This makes it so easy

Thanks for sharing!
Right.
Nice tip! One could burn a CD with those tones if they have a cd player in their system.
Nice one Gary, that's really great. I too was a bit wary of using the bias on my deck, but you put it really well. I'll give your method a try.
I am glad to hear I have inspired you, Let me know how you get on.
@@GaryKeepItSimple Will do and big thanks again.
they still make tapes? wow. I still have a bunch of mine from the 70s and 80s...they still sound pretty good.
There are new tapes being made. RTM Fox is one. You have to be careful with the Chinese no name tapes they are not reliable for quality.
Thanks for the tip. On a 3-head cassette deck it's even easier to set it

@@GaryKeepItSimple The problem is that even with the external Bias dial set to max - it is not enough. With it set in the middle is WAY off

Just to add. If you note where the bias settings are, you can always put them back to that position when you record that tape again.
@@GaryKeepItSimple oh wow! Thank you!

What’s the name of the app you’re using? Couldn’t catch it in the video.

Eccellente calibrazione,ottimo
Excellent calibration, excellent.......... Thank you. I am glad you got something useful from the video

Muito obrigado. Baita sacada essa sua. Vou fazer nos meus decks.
Fico feliz que você possa fazer uso disso. Obrigado pelo seu feedback
Hello please how do you have a connected cell phone and a cassette player for calibration?
What calibration do you want to do?

Welcome!
Not a very good explanation of what you're doing here sir
How can I help you?
It was a "How to" not a "Why it works", but if you want any help I am happy to assist.
