Lovely video! Another old tradition of the Yule log: get a real tree for decorating, and after Yule is over, set it out in the garage. At Candlemas, cut the boughs off, and burn them, using the flame for visualizing your plans for the new Spring. At Beltane, use the trunk to weave your ribbons in dancing with your coven. And then at last, the trunk becomes the next Yule log and you get that years decorating tree. I've never had a fireplace to be able to do this, and regardless of how fun it sounds, Minnesota is no place to be outside for rituals in the winter!. Maybe someday...

To be honest, I miss christmas from when I was a kid. There was snow everywhere, my sisters and I would go Sledging and the whole house was decoratet. Now the magic is kinda gone, with the weather looking like a cold and wet autumn, almost up to no decorations and opening your christmas calendar has become not as awesome as before. I really miss the old Christmas feeling

We always celebrate the return of the light by having moon and sun ornaments on our Yule tree and before sunrise we turn the ornaments to the sun side. In the evening we turn all the lights out and sit in the dark for some time meditating on the year past and then we run around the entire house ringing a bell and turning on all the lights to welcome the light. You can also just light candles but you want it bright! We do a complete house clean before Yule and on the evening of Yule we sweep out the old energy from inside the house to outside. We also started a new tradition of leaving a small amount of items we think symbolize what we wish to attract in the new year and as the sun rises we bring those items inside the house so that the first things to enter our home is the intentions we have for the new year. Yule is one of my favorite celebrations!

Lucia was on the day of the winter solstice originally, but then the gregorian calender happened and mucked stuff up so now we celebrate Lucia on the 13th of December.
Look up Jonna Jinton here on YT if you want to see something amazing, she just posted a gorgeous Lucia video where she is singing one of our traditional Lucia songs as well as portraying her. 💙❄

@@cranberrybe i think like most pagan traditions, the christians took it, added some christian flair to it to make it proper in their book and now we have pagan traditions with christian names. I dont know if it has always been called Lucia and the sankta/saint was added on, or if the whole Lucia name was added, but the tradition to walk through the longest night of the year with candles to light it up is old and pre-christian (to my knowing)

I celebrate Norse pagan Yule. I recognize the winter solstice and trying to keep physical and emotional light/warmth throughout the winter. But I also honor my god, Odin and my goddess, Nyx especially strongly around this time. I observe the stories of the Yule goat, Odin riding Sleipnir, Baba Yaga, etc. I connect with the correspondences of the herbs, stones, and decorations of the seasons and use it as a time of rest and rejuvenation. I use the time to really connect to my Norse pagan roots and try to reconnect with family energies and bonds.

Your theory about SAD honestly makes me feel a little better. I was just diagnosed with fibromyalgia this month, and I've noticed as it's gotten colder/darker, my fatigue symptoms have gotten much worse. While I definitely feel that my condition is absolutely medical and needs medical treatment etc, I do sometimes think that different kinds of energies can have an impact on my physical symptoms. I sleep very late into the morning these days, which I hate because I feel this desperate need to be productive (overcompensating for the limitations of my disability, I suspect), and I wonder if it's my body and the seasons trying to tell me to chill tf out.

I experience a lot of disconnect around Christmas time because I live in the southern hemisphere and Christmas happens at the same time as the summer solstice. It feels so wrong to be celebrating all these winter traditions in the heat - not to mention that it's so much harder to slip my pagan celebrations into my family's traditional ones. I often wonder how much more I'd enjoy this time of year if I lived in a country where it coincided with yule...

The Witch Of Wonderlust No worries! I was just adding/informing. I don’t expect you to know everything about everything! The Danes and Norwegians celebrate Lucia very similarly, while the Swedes have some different aspects to their celebration. I believe it’s also celebrated at least in parts of Italy, along with a few more of the Northern European countries. But otherwise it’s not a very common tradition.
I think you would find it quite interesting, though, to look into the potential alternative origins of the tradition, both Christian and pagan.
To name a few, a belief was that Lussinata - a witch and/or she-devil - would come down from the hills on the 13th until Yule and severely punish anyone and everyone who hadn’t finished certain chores and obligations before this time. With her she had her following of spirit/she-devils called the Lussiferda. The sorta resembles the Saint Lucia tradition of one Lucia bride leading a following Lucia girls.
Between the return of Lussinata and Yule it was also believed that trolls, evil spirits, spirits of the dead, and other undergroundlings were able to roam free.
Other theories suggest that a similar celebration was held in honor of deities like Sunna (Norse goddess of the sun).
And as a final example, some areas of the Lucia celebrating lands don’t - or at least didn’t in older Christian times - celebrate Saint Lucia’s day as it was believed to be a false celebration that in reality was for Lucifer in disguise or for Lilith (in part because of the similarities in the names). 😊

Very interesting to hear people talk about seasons and how different countries have similar rituals around them. A winter solstice in my country would be just any other day, so we dont have any rituals like those. Just another Tuesday or something lol. At most we have our harvest festivals (no such thing as summer). Thats about it. Planting all year round. No winter, no spring, no summer, no fall. No samhain (?) And such.

We celebrate Christmas and Yule in our house. If you ever get the chance, read "Yule" by Llewellyn. They are small books that describe what the celebration is about, it's got recipes and spells. They have a book for each Pagan holiday and they are such good books. They also are very inexpensive, highly recommend if you get the chance! Thank you again for your videos, I always look forward to them, Blessed Be ❤️❤️❤️!!!

I've just gotten back in my craft(unrelated to the video but whatever lol) cause work 😂, I recently had gotten fired like two days ago, but you know what, I said I was done with retail, I wanted to find another job or a second job and be there just like one day a week, hell one guy who had two jobs there and was there one day a week could barely do it, hell two weeks in and only a short time after my training was over I was already said bad things about, at this point after the initial shock and how the firing was delivered, I'm just like oh well, some things just won't last, I did say in a post I made that in fall that things were going to happen and things were going to change, it was a feeling, but it was a pleasant feeling, it wasn't dreading or anything, it was a good feeling, and I'm here just like...actually I'm not even mad anymore I was mad for a day or two and then I was good 😂, and I still have my holiday spirit after getting fired is that normal XD?
I went into this whole thing but that's not surprising for me 😂😂, but hey, I have time to get back to practicing my craft and finding...maybe even a better job, hey my mom said this could be a blessing in disguise she might be right 🤷‍♀️, and I get to go to my family's annual Christmas Eve party, maybe, actually no I won't say maybe I'll I will, I will find a job that's gonna let me have the time I want and if it turns to be retail again, least I have my holidays back that's what I cared about the most❤️

Hmmm....journaling is a good idea...especially writing down your thoughts and also about people...I've been thinking of doing that lately...noticing people around me, just observing them and writing down anything that might be interesting... you never know what information might be useful...lot of patterns reveal a lot of things...information is always useful right..hashana
Anyway, great video...although I think this might be an old one..

It's a little more obvious when you decorate the house for the winter solstice in the southern hemisphere sis 😂 *makes house look very christmassy in red, candles, acorns, Yule logs, etc* Everyone entering my home: "what are you doing? Christmas is in 6 months..."

I'm not sure if anyone's asked you this before in the past, but as an Australian, would it be weird for me to have things for Yule, despite being the winter solstice, in the summer, since Yule/Christmas in the Southern Hemisphere is in our summer. It gets really confusing for me, because my months are the opposite of the Northern Hemisphere, and everyone's preparing for Yule (or Christmas, depending on who) and, yeah, I'm really confused what to do and I was wondering if you could help?

I know this question isn’t related to the video that much but can you still have a book of shadows/grimoire if you aren’t Wiccan?

    • @TheWitchOfWonderlust
      @TheWitchOfWonderlust  4 роки тому

You can! Most practitioners do. It's really just a book to keep everything in, but Wiccans use the term "Book of Shadows", where as I've had practitioners call it whatever they please.

Lucia in Sweden is not the equivalent of winter solstice celebrations, and it's also derrived from when christianity forced itself into the country (Lucia is a christian saint and martyr). The oldest winter solstice celebration in scandinavia is known as Midvinterblot, from the vikings. And before christianity we celebrated Jul, a more pagan-like christmas :-) I celebrate both midvinterblot and jul, as they are not quite the same or on the same date

Lucia isn't connected to the winter solstice, but a lovely tradition non the less. It's Christian and comes from Italy originally, but I'm sure we've changed plenty of it by now. We celebrate jul at the winter solstice, this is a pagan tradition that's been celebrated in similar ways as far back as the viking age.
