- The Nunnally Ichthyology Collection at VIMS houses more than 40,000 specimens of larval fishes, which are housed in small vials within large cabinets.
Andrew Corso, VIMS Ph.D. candidate at VIMS, studies some of these larval fishes, including the Antarctic silverfish featured in this video. Andrew recently published a paper* in Communications Biology on his research that shows a correlations between warming waters, decreased sea ice, and the reduced abundance of Antarctic silverfish, which are an important prey for penguins, seals, and other local marine life.
