Andrew Lloyd Webber and Gillian Lynne delve behind the scenes and discuss the first original production of Cats.
A behind the scenes look at the history of the iconic musical.
From Cats (1998): Andrew Lloyd Webber's CATS, the most famous musical of all time, first exploded onto the West End stage in 1981. 'Memory', one of its many classic songs, became an instant worldwide hit. Since then CATS has smashed records and conquered the world. Using the latest technology, all the excitement, thrill, romance and intimacy of this theatrical legend has been captured on screen. Breathtaking visuals and full digital sound (that has been completely re-recorded with a seventy piece orchestra) will leave you deep into the mysterious world of CATS as you've never seen it before -- more intoxicating and magical than you could possibly imagine. With a star cast including Elaine Paige and Sir John Mills.

A slightly frustrated ALW explaining what Jellicle Cats are at 1:23 brings me such joy
I think Mr. Sheffield was right, this is a WEIRD concept. No one could have imagined it was going to be such a good show!!
It's never not creeped me out, but I've always been impressed at the athleticism and talent involved in this, the human body at its absolute peak. Must be a hell of a thing to have been involved in such an exhibition of physicality.
Well certain characters like magical mr mistoffeeleese had to be played by a ballet dancer due to the difficulty of the dance (the jumps) near the end of his song. Plus the other characters cartwheels, splits etc. it’s not for a musical just anyone can perform (depending on the character played). Iv seen it on stage and think it’s great but the 1998 stage recirculating will always be my favourite and most viewed version. 2019 version just doesn’t cut it.
RIP Dame Gillian Lynne. Legend ❤️
To those people who don't like cats but are still wondering😂 of its 'success' and/or how 'great' it is, try looking at it more in an artistic sense, like how all these fictional cat characters are cleverly put to life with the magic of very talented movement and use of music. It may not be for everyone's liking and taste, but it is pure art really, at least for me.
Zelle Sev I read the book and it made more sense. It’s really just a collection of poems, not really a storyline. So if you’re looking at it as individual poems represented by these amazing cats then yes it’s a magical show. Cost me make a movement it’s ingenius.
More 1981Cats please 😍
This gave me chill bumps! The history of the greatest show in the world ever
Such an incredible show with a long and fascinating history
Time for my absolute favourite puurfect show ❤️🐈
I noticed Sarah Brightman at "38. She was the original Jemima.
I was very lucky earlier this year (before the world went the hell in a hand basket) to pick up a pretty much pristine copy of the original soundtrack on vinyl for only £1 at a flea market at the Bath & West Showground. Having just bought my fianceé a new record player for Christmas. 😊
My fav Musical!
Gorgeous!!!
Please upload Macavity ♥️
Aeva and Rosemary are my absolute faves
i’m waiting for some teasers👀
Absolutely adore the artistry of this show 💜
Great video and brings back so many memories (pun was totally intended) 😂🐈 But this was the first show I worked on at aged 17 and loved it. I worked there for almost 3 years. 💖
On this?

Now and Forever.
This is very interesting to learn about the beginning of this strange musical. My sister really likes it, but it is not my type of thing really. It was cool to learn about though.
And the lovely Finola Hughes. Remember her? Stayin Alive? General Hospital? I miss her ! She’s the white cat!
Yes, she's gorgeous
I was supposed to see this musical for my 16th Birthday, but my mom gave me the most amazing sweet 16 Birthday party with all my friends. I am so lucky.
Even if this show looked very entertaining....and full of symbolism I am sure....
"I think that the real moment of truth came when a paying public first saw a cat. Because either that was going to be one of the biggest moments of legendary bathos ever seen in the history of theatre..." [see: Cats (2019)]
Does anyone know when the costume and makeup design changed?
Yesss!!
Andrew lloyd webber is so youthful hereee
Hal, it’s about Cats.
Alw looks the same as he does now
Does this mean they are going to show this for free later???
I doubt that it has any meaning. They have been showing clips throughout the summer in order to keep interest in the channel alive. Last week some people inferred that showing the clip "So Long, Farewell" was a cryptic clue that the shows were all over. Second guessing the intentions of the channel sets people up for disappointment. We will know by next week what the first show will be.
Didn't they already as part of the lon down theater?
I wonder if Lindsay has watched this.
Cool
Hi I’m early
01:18 The host is as confused as most of the viewers of that program were. Andrew talks about jellicle cats as if everyone has heard of that term.
Still better then the crappy movie
The movie is great
@@dawnjohnson3263 incorrect
the movie is shit
The costumes for the first production were tragic, gotta love the 80’s 😂
Cat 6 necesita refujio la gata y arisco llevarselo to-do q tenga agua comida
They don’t even look like cats in the original production
Why is Cats?
Its a night in the lives of London street cats enz
It would be another 38 years before it found its definitive form in Tom Hooper's spellbinding motion picture Cats.
Too right. The movie is fabulous
😆😆😆😆😆💀
You’re joking, right? 😂

Oh, why did they ruin this w/the latest movie!?
I wouldn't get too hung up over the 2019 film...there are always bad film adaptations of stage musicals. Just watch the 1998 version again, or if you're daring, you can try listening to bootleg recordings. Recently listened to a live bootleg of Buckley singing "Memory" and I got chills - the singing was so good that it broke through the muddled recording.
What's wrong with the movie? Its fantastic. You really don't have to copy the crowd you know
Young ALW looks so...
Yep

Wow... it was just as dumb back then. Remarkable. 👏
