that might be all true but the parrots have been in Pasadena since the 1920ties when a truck overturned spilling them out--their main roost was at the retired teachers homes villiage on villa street west of el molino --i was a paper boy in that area in the 50ties and everybody around there knew the story

In Alhambra, a few minutes from Pasadena, there are THOUSANDS. To they're extremely noisy! We like to watch them in the mornings. They love to hang out in the palm trees. You can find them usually squawking and chasing each other off in the morning. They're pretty amazing.

So that solves the mystery of the loud palm birds I heard in the am/pm in Alhambra! I had no idea they were parrots, as they hid in the tall trees! Wow!!!

The rumor or story is, a few years back there was a wildfire in Monrovia and domestic parrots were released from a pet store that was near these fires. The birds survived and flourished. They are now wild parrots native to the San Gabriel Valley.

I’m wondering why they call them Pasadena Parrots. I’m in Lynwood CA and these parrots have been driving me insane for the past week! They fill 3 huge trees surrounding my house. One in each of my neighbors front yard and a huge tree in the backyard thats adjacent to my backyard. It’s like I’m in the middle of a parrot triangle. They scream and fly from tree to tree all day long. It’s the worse in the evenings because they just fly in a huge flock from tree to tree clockwise while screaming until they tire out I guess. Then around 6am they start their screaming again. There has to be at least 200 of them, it’s just insane!

Pasadena was just the area I happened to be in when I first noticed them. And yeah, it's pretty crazy how many there are. Definitely caught me by surprise :)

shannona80 I have one of these parrots with me at home I rescued from a bad person he ( Pepe the parrot) is free all day long at home with plenty of food water and friends he is still very wild and yes he can scream very very loudly but since I have it I will never change him for any other animal I try to keep him wild he is 4 years old and only reap one word when he is afraid an that is( periquito) that's the signal to come and save me -when he start to scream is because there are many more parrots flying close by or because he wants company in general he is a great pet he flies all over the hose and so far he didn't destroy any thing -for me his screams are like classic music It doesn't bother me at all I take it like a Canadian man who always walk by my house drunk with a beer in his hand screaming--Canada is the best- you probably have your own way to express happiness with parrots is the same and those are not just screams they are communicating with each other it sound like a lot of bla bla bla -i guess they will think the same about a bunch of people talking at ones ---

Cool video, I live in San Fernando CA and one summer evening I saw and counted about 60 parrots or pandemonium in my front yard on the big tree. Load little creatures. They were there for abut 20 min and then they all flew away. They do come back to the same tree every year. I would like to know how they became native to Southern California

Born and raised in the SF Valley here. Been seeing them annually for the past 40 or so years. The rumor is when Busch Gardens closed up in here in '79, a bunch of the parrots managed to escape and these are probably descendants of those that escaped or were freed.
I have seen huge flocks of 50+, usually seen between Apr to October when it is much warmer and usually just before sunset.

Here in Miami there’s parrots everywhere u can hear and see the large flocks flying over neighborhoods. Also if there’s a large fruit tree in your neighborhood you’re bound to see them there as well. If you’re lucky you can even see macaws sometimes. We have little green parrots here in Westwood. But just recently when I was riding down Overland crossing Pico, I heard this noise like fake high-pitched laughing and I thought that someone was playing some soundtrack as a joke from one of the cars. It was literally like high pitched, "Ha ha ha ha ha, haaaa"... Then I looked up and I saw a flock of very large parrots, with very long tails. I don't know what kind they were, but it almost sounded like they were imitating a human laughing. It was really strange and funny at the same time.

Thank you for sharing your high quality video-you spotted a lot of other great birds on the way! The Black Phoebe is one of my favorites. The Amazon Parrots are also well known in Orange County, which is south of L.A. They fly in pairs (either mating pairs or mentor-mentee pairs) at sunset, and in the spring you can find hundreds hanging out on phone lines (now that’s a very loud sight!). Some find them annoying but I love them, and I am glad that their exotic fruit diet makes them likely not invasive to other species so that they are welcome to stay here.

Years ago when we served a sabbatical in Pasadena, a colony of parrots lived in a dead palm tree on the street. In the morning the flock would fly to feeding grounds ( I guess) and return in the evening to settle for the night. It was fascinating!

If you ever come back to Pasadena, for the parrots, a great spot to find hundreds of them is in a large tree, in the parking lot of the Arroyo Seco Tennis club... and the best time to view them is in the evening, around 7 pm. They all seem to be returning to nest in the huge pine, and it's a cacophony of sound and activity!!

Hey I live in this area, Burbank specifically, and the birds aren’t all the same species. We learned about it in school that the green is the most dominant color among parrots and that there’s multiple different breeds that fly in the flock and cross breed. You can even find African Grey’s in the flocks sometimes but their color strongly stands out
Edit: looked it up and there are 13 species of parrot that, not including the rare African grey.

Busch Gardens in Van Nuys only a few miles from my home town of Granada Hills let most of them go when the amusement park was being torn down, they accidentally destroyed a huge aviary that was connected to several other aviaries letting loose nearly 1200 birds of many species like Macaw's, African Grays and many Parrots but mostly Amazon Parrots that you can find on almost every block with a nut or fruit tree on it, they all like the Peacon trees in our backyards. In my neighborhood we get several Scarlett Macaw's that come and eat our block long of trees with large seed pods, we have had a Hyacinth Macaw that someone caught with a gun shot powered net that all of us tried to get him to leave, but he showed us he had three of the type and a female he may like so we let it go at that. Over at a park a mile away there are several dozen Amazon Parrots along with African Grays that I have not seen in a year or so. The most notable though have been the peach faced love birds that our local Sparrow Hawks, Redtailed and Coopers Hawks along with Peregrine Falcons we see now and then love them for a snack along with the Sparrows and Doves. I had an encounter with a Falcon when one either knocked down a fast flying Dove fly into the front window of my bedroom trying to avoid or was hit by the Falcon. After I heard the bang, I saw the Falcon over the Dove so no one else could see it. The Falcon then removed a bunch of feathers and ate most of the internal organs of the bird before taking off. I can't believe the amount of birds you can see here in the San Fernando valley if you just sit in our park and listen, it's like we're in some Amazon Jungle,! By the way, I have had on two separate occasions peach faced Love birds land in my backyard , one landed on my chair I sit on under my trees wanting food and water, I put my finger out and they let me handle them. I had a cockatiel a few years before so I still had this very expensive cage I went overboard on that the Love birds loved. I had the first one for four years before he died of old age. Then a few years later another love bird landed on my back step while I was sitting around my pool. I went and opened the back door and he walked right in! Again, he let me pick him up, or fingered him and put him in the cage, I had him for almost six years before he passed. That bird I could take outside and let him fly. He would do circles around my house calling out, land and get a drink then off again. He would do this for about a half hour then when he was done he would land on this hanging potted plant next to my back door. I would open the screen and door and he would either fly to the back of the lounge chair I sit in or to his cage. That was a very smart love bird and had a good vocabulary of sounds like knocking, pings from a computer and different sounds he would pick up from the Radio or TV. I miss that bird, one of the best species to have as a friend.

You're alright. I lived in Wisc. for 10 years and was my experience that the only time the natives would look at a bird is when they were pointing a gun at it.
I used to live in Glendora, east of Pasadena. There were a couple dozen parrots that lived in the date palms out front. Every morning at first light, they'd collect on my balcony railing and squawk away. It was such a cool sight, it didn't bother me they woke me up early.

In San Diego we have a large population of these parrots and much smaller populations of four other species. In late spring the carrotwood trees produce an orange fruit/nut and our trees all full of red crested Amazons for 5-6 weeks. They are thriving and seen throughout SD county now. Many roosts are in the community of Ocean Beach and they migrate inland in the morning for food and can be seen in large numbers returning to the coast in the late afternoon. Thirty of them outside of your domicile in the early morning will certainly gain your attention from the volume and it’s great. Another fifty years and they’ll be quite common in SoCal as the climate and food sources are ideal.

@@BadgerlandBirding Some of my favorite local warblers are Hermit and Black-Throated Gray. When spiring migrations happening, you'll hear those songs everywhere.WInters alway great for Sparrows, getting migrants from pretty much everywhere. Golden-crowneds are common in winter. And with a little searching and knowing the right places you can often find some pretty interesting stuff, like Bell's and Sagebrush Sparrow. Lawrences Goldfinch are some cool coastal specialties. Pretty much most of the western birds can bee seen at some point of the year here. Probably the bird I think of when I think of Costal California is the Wrentit, singing it's distinctive song in the coastal scrub. Where I am were lucky to have one of the countries best vagrant trap, point Reyes. Most years we get most of the eastern wood warblers, some flycatchers and vireos. Mexican overshoots come, like Yellow-green Vireo and blue footed and brown boobies seen off the shore.I've been getting Red-throated Pipit yearly the past couple years. Point Reyes has gotten all of the longspurs. European Visitors like Eurasian Dotterel, Eurasian Kestrel, Eurasian Skylark and Dusky Warbler and two species of wagtail have shown up, all in my county alone. The California coast is a great place to bird

There are isolated pockets of wild parrots living throughout the Southern U.S. With the Monk Parakeet seemingly able to deal with the NYC climate. I'm rather hoping that they can expand out of suburbia and start making it in more rural areas. We used to have at least one native species of parrot, the Carolina Parakeet, and would love to see it replaced by other species just to increase biodiversity in the U.S.

in longbeach near the belmont pool and peir there are red faced parrots all along the road on the eucalyptis trees grown in a row, in palmtrees that are a hundred foot tall
usually from there to the wilson high school and bank but they can go miles from that
at the Eldoraldo wooded area next to the one near the senior center has a hawk, and so does cherry park, 2 parents and a paler feathered tan young bird with a large nest at the top o f a strong tree next to the stage with a round shaped trunk elevated with huge roots
and sparrows, mockingbirds, crows and ravens are more inland, over youth schools seagulls can develop a pattern to go there

I have seen them ( or a similar flock ) in me backyard 2 or maybe 3 times(ish) over the years. There's quite a few birds on my culdesac. Besides the finches , doves , same bluebird couple , there were these small black birds with bellow beaks in healthy numbers , maybe a couple of years ago. I think it was in the winter or fall. Maybe? Hawks as well. More than a few years ago there was a murder of 1000s of crows about a quarter of a mile as well. I never found out what happened to them. I am about 15 miles south of pasadena. I have not seen the parrots in at least 8 years. Probably more. Do you know if the pair of blue jays are the same couple or their offspring perhaps. Lol. I guess it can't be the same because it's been decades. Offspring? And the black birds ? Thankyouverymuch
