I'm not a nam vet but I was in OIF and I can tell you that that's one of the first things they teach you in Army basic training combatives is to instantly go for the neck and put your enemy in a choke hold. For Kevin Costner not being an actual war vet himself he sure played one well 👍👌
My friends father was a nam vet (I'm not that old, he had his son at like 50) and that man was the biggest hippie around. Full on dead head in the bay area. I interviewed him in high school. The man killed people but never told us, we only know because his name was on the wall the had at base. He hated violence, but he wasn't harmless
I powerful statement that could teach everyone a valuable lesson. Just because someone may not be prone or apt to violence does not mean they are not capable or, under the right circumstances, willing to stand up for the things they love. Those who have seen war know violence and it's ugly faces, then wish it no more. Those who have never been to battle mock it childishly as if it were a game. Never underestimate a man who is reluctant to fight, cause it is most likely he that has seen more violence than he cared to.
i saw this film a long time ago by accident (repertory theatre) and didn't think much about it before it began....then wow....what an extraordinary movie
I love this movie definitely in my top 10. I love watching old movies like this. I’m 38 years old it just brings me back to being a little kid and remembering how life used to be and how I wish it still was
I was to young to appreciate this scene the first time I saw it but even then this scene stuck with me. I've become a father, served in the U.S. Army and just generally grown up since then and now feel very moved by this scene.
Rotten Tomatoes 25% why ? Because it showed a man being responsible for his actions, and taking care of his child, and teaching him the value of an apology. 🤨🤨🤨
I remember watching this movie as a kid I’m 38 years old and it just brings back old memories to how life used to be and not this fucking shit world that we live in now
I love when he gave the kids the cotton candy. One of my favorite Kevin Costner movies. The other movie is A PERFECT WORLD. If u haven't seen it I strongly recommend it
The water tower scene kinda horrified me as a kid.. And ironically, when I got older, at the age of 11, I nearly drowned after getting sucked into a culvert in a low water bridge.
its good.. and they show realism.. and ugliness of people and children but also kindness..yes its overracted a few times a little sappy at times but its an underrated movie
I will never understand why some people don’t like this film. I know we all have our own opinions, but in my opinion, this movie is great, and that is the correct opinion.
Saw this movie when it was released in the theaters (I must've been 11 or 12) and it haunted me. To this day, and after serving...this movie no longer haunts me-it speaks for me. Underrated film and deserves so much respect.
"The War is not a good film" Agree to disagree sir. This movie is one of my favorites and has many powerful scenes and important lessons. It is an excellent film.
I said the same thing. The War is an absolutely wonderful movie, as the daughter of a Vietnam vet, I remember the nightmares. Also, the kids, all of the kids, steal the show though.
The humility, humbleness, respect and self control and business he shows and handles in this scene is imeasurable to how us as men should conduct ourselves
I disagree. The War is an amazing movie. It should have won many awards. Maybe you'll understand when you mature a bit. Costner plays Stephen Simmons, a man who has seen war in Vietnam, isn't afraid of killing, but through his experiences has come to understand the destruction in hate , and the power in love. He has chosen the latter for himself, often to his own hurt, and his family's hurt. It makes him a stronger man. I almost needed grief counseling after watching this movie, and Elijah Wood delivers the most heart wrenching lines when he is told his father has died. There are powerful themes in this movie. They seem to have gone completely over your head.

I once read this phrase in a book: "The best warrior wins without ever having fought, and wins the war without throwing a single blow." This scene will live in me forever. Usually, loudmouths are Simply that, big mouths, the fact that you don't want to fight doesn't mean you're a coward, you simply know the value of peace.
the film is a little sappy at times... but this scene and when kevin coster's character gives cotton candy to the lipnicki kids "they look like they hadn't received anything in a long time" very moving
I watched this movie growing up in the 90s, probably 12-13 yrs old. Beautiful. Honorable. I grew up as a Latina in America and seeing this made me realize the seriousness of race issues. It reminds me of my dad, such a hard working man, standing for right no matter where! On top I had a little brother whom I was and still am overprotective of…this movie taught me to live life respectfully, humbly, and rightfully…color is NOT a matter. No matter the circumstances!
Maybe it's not the best film BUT for me seeing this scene as a child was important. I Understood that some people don't want to fight, not because of what you will do to them but because they're afraid of what they will do to you if it happens to go there. Some people have no control and once you've put them into fight/survival mode they will do anything and everything to end you forreal and minor disagreements are hardly worth that. As an adult I can see why someone wouldn't like this film but as a child I needed to see it.
So well put. I have tried to explain this to people but I think you have this understanding or you dont. People dont realize, as he says in another scene, how dramatically one split second decision can change your life. People think that everything is fair and there is some kind of “code” that you follow in a fight. There isnt. Someone gets knocked to the ground, there is no chilverous code where the fight stops. They could stomp on your head while you are unconscious and defenseless. Five of the persons friends could join in and beat you TO DEATH. Then there are weapons that could come out. I had to do a lot of maturing to learn to just take insults and even antagonistic pushing and such. Nothing is worth getting in a fight. Unless someones life is on the line, I let it go. Do whatever you want, say whatever you want, im walking away, or running. If you instigate violence, then you compel me to react with lethal force. I have no idea and can not count on someones sense of fair play that they wont entice 10 of their friends to beat me to death if im getting the better of them. I cant rely on them saying ok, i knocked him on his ass, he’s had enough guys, or we proved our point. No, i have to assume that if a situation gets physical, that either me or someone i love could end up dead. So nothing, my pride, ego, money, is worth someones life. It makes me sick to think about losing it and killing someone. But when i think about someone i love being hurt, “ a button gets pressed” So i hold back with all my strength, and if that line gets crossed. At least i know it was life and death. A life and death scenario is the ONLY one i would ever react physically to.

Thank you for posting this. "Not a good film"? Many films of this genre are often not appreciated because they remind us of parts of our humanity that we do not want to think about, like war, prejudice, evil, lack of care for others, ignorance of the rest of the world..... The term "retarded" is viewed as obsolete by most mental health workers today. Most would use the term "challenged" or perhaps "not privileged". I often remember what one of my teachers told me, that MOST of us are "temporarily able" as compared to some who are "permanently disabled". "He is crap in the rest of the film"? He portrays a "wounded warrior" quite well. He has seen more death and war than most of us would want to see, and has redrawn his beliefs and life accordingly. How do you decide what to believe and how to live? Do you (we?) learn from our individual and collective mistakes? Do we even admit to those mistakes? That is what Mr. Costner is trying to show. Has he succeeded? Tell me that. I think he has come close, and THAT is why you do not like this film, except for the close violence you show here. You have a good life, my friend.....
This is so powerful.... Soldier or not.... Sometimes i am stew and open my fat mouth and don't see the bigger picture. My (step) dad is kevin costner. He is the best man alive. He chose to love me
