No one needs to work 10 hours a day in a sweatshop or cleaning toilets the same as no one needs to spend 10 hours a day bent over a piece of canvas pretending to be a great artist. Both are dangerous when separated and when done in extreme. It is like trying to walk with one leg only.

May I suggest to anyone needing to feed their creativity that no matter where you work, you are working for yourself. Years ago I had a manager angrily shout "you work for me, and you do what I say." I replied "No sir. I work FOR me and mine, I work AT UPS. If I continue to choose to do so then yes I do what you instruct." I'm working on breaking out of Shawshank, but in my mind and heart I'm still working for me, my family, and my goals. The words we choose hold a lot of weight in our subconscious. Making more and more time to get to the drawing board.

I actually did turn my passion into a career. I loved sewing and so became a bridal seamstress. At first I loved it. It was so much fun working on different dresses. But after seven years, the initial glamour has worn off, and especially this past year, the stress of the job has been too much to handle. I haven't sewn for pleasure in a really long time, and anytime someone calls me for a "side gig" I turn them away because the last thing I want to do during my time off is more bridal alterations. So I have just quit my job in the bridal industry for a more "boring" job doing basic alterations on uniforms for kids at a local school. Sometimes turning your hobby into your career is the fastest way to kill your passion for it. Sometimes things are more enjoyable when you don't have to worry about it putting food on the table.

But I think "laziness" is often depression, disinterest or hopelessness. And I think this generation has a lot of valid reasons to be suffering all of the above. The so called spoiled kids who are lazy and play videogames all day instead of putting their energy and effort toward productive goals are suffering an addiction often caused by emotional neglect or some kind of trauma. Without addressing the root cause of that issue it's very hard to push them to be focused and disciplined.

Addictive substances are readily available. It doesn’t matter whether or not you’re already depressed, the substance will cause you to rely on it. More time you put into your phone/video games/ tv watching the more it becomes a habit/addiction and your go to reward system. I don’t disagree with you but in also think there’s a degree of accountability. A lot of younger people are using weed and nicotine vapes because of accessibility without there ever being a need to touch those things

The very idea of 'laziness' is logically flawed and is cyclical -
Why do you call him lazy?
      Because he doesn't do anything!
Oh, and why doesn't he do anything?
      Well, because he's lazy!
Anyone using the term lazy to describe someone else (or even themselves) has an agenda and should never be taken seriously.

A strong sense of self is really important when working on personal projects alongside a wage-earning job. It’s easy to get lost in the undertow of: “if I was any good at ______, I wouldn’t be working here.”
After I left college, I worked for a few years as a barista. It was fun but ultimately left me feeling cognitively underwhelmed. So I took the opportunity to start painting murals around my city and was able to paint several murals in a couple of years. It was the perfect balance of part-time income and enough free time to pursue big creative projects. More importantly, I stopped feeling like being a barista wasn’t important work because I had developed a stronger sense of self worth.
Then I got a “big girl” job which paid more but the full-time hours drastically reduced the amount of time I could spend cultivating my art skills and pursuing opportunities to paint. Even though I was doing more prestigious work, I lost so much by minimizing my personal time.
Always remember- your income does not equal your potential or your self worth!

Goal setting is an economic tool, not a means to understand one's self. Passion has been manipulated into working for a system, but passion is far more than that. A person who doesn't first have a passion for knowing, for truth, is someone who can only ply their passion meaninglessly. But the tower of babel will shatter.

  • @ericv738

One important factor not addressed in this video as pertaining to the Don't Quit and do you passion as a hobby side -- As a full time employee, you're drained at the end of the day, at the end of the week... And a lot of people work more than full time. Being drained like that doesn't leave room for the side hustle, no matter how determined you are. You only have a limited amount of juice to give to either. If that juice runs out at 43 hours a week and you work 40, not much you can do... at least in experience.

Is this excuse going to work for you later on in life? Are you good with trading this excuse for what your real passion is?
Don't wake up one day when you're old and regret you didn't pursue your passion. You must try. For you.

    • @cthoadmin7458

Yes, this is me exactly. When 6 o'clock comes I've given all I can give, I don't have the energy to plough into my hobbies, I just want to veg out. I want to study philosophy but find my brain so fuzzed by work I can't take it in. Give me 3 months without work and my mind changes, I can hold complex ideas in my head again... This is why I hate work, but I can't give it up because I need to earn a living, and a career in liberal arts is very difficult to get unless you are exceptionally smart.

This video really hits home for me! I’ve realized that we’ve really gotten trapped into working for corporations and getting thrown into cubicles. 100 years ago most of the population worked for themselves and life was a lot more satisfying. There is nothing satisfying working for some giant machine of a company that doesn’t know you or care to know you. They trap us with benefits, pay, and promises of retiring one day. They offer all of these benefits because they don’t want people to realize their own dreams and follow their passion.
I can’t say it enough when I say that everyone needs to get a passion project. And when you’re not working your 9-5 keep watering that passion project and it can become self serving. Doing your passion as your job should be the dream of every sensible person. I realized that standup comedy was a passion of mine, so every day when I get off work I’m either writing comedy, preforming, or contacting venues to get my next booking. If I don’t treat my passion as a full time job now it will never become my full time job

Even 200yrs ago people were worked to the bone by corporations.
A 100yrs ago was the end of the progressive era which followed the industrial revolution, during which time people like never before were worked literally to death, from children to old people with little to no rights.
A minority of people had satisfying lives and jobs, most them were already well established people of wealth.
      The others largely got lucky.
A 100yrs ago the whole theme of the democratic party in the Us was to regulate corporations because they had no actual enforced limitations regarding workers rights and individual freedom.
At least today i can call in sick without worrying about being fired simply for being sick or forced to work regardless.
Those who had it easy back then wouldve been working on farms or in the lumberjack industry and it wouldve been very tough with long hours and heavy loads, the most populous job in the progressive era was in the cotton industry as the prelude to the great war, it was made abundantly clear that cotton would be vital for everything from clothing to bomb manufacturing.
Bet had you been around 100yrs ago working full days in the cotton fields you wouldn't be much satisfied or being stuck in a factory job working shit hours for meager pay doing mind numbingly boring yet extremely tough work you'd still be left quite unsatisfied.
But thats just my opinion on the matter.
We have lost so much through personal and individual sacrifices on the wider scale it is immeasurable all in the name of progress, my great grandfather could speak 6or7 languages, not because he was educated, on the contrary, he had to in order to survive and get by and get jobs, he could work with wood, metal, steel, he could wire up a radio, he knew what kind of weather it would be the following day just be looking at the skies, he could tell me every story from our homeland, every inch of land had a story to tell and he knew that story, that was how it was back then the eagerness to survive and thrive, something that we have lost here in this era, replaced with the exuberant illusion of abundant wealth and the constant dependence on the government has led us to loose that vital part of ourselves that basic eagerness of humanity.
And that i believe it to be the reason to our over grandizing of that particular era.
Life was filthy, life was hard, life was extremely unfair life was tough but life still remained humane at the essence of it all despite everything and that is what he have much of today.
A basic simply sense of humanity
      A sense of belonging
A sense of a genuine community.

@Edvin Statistically more people were self employed. Thats my point. I know human existence was always much rougher and the levels of work were a lot more extreme. I’m only talking about doing work that is satisfying. My great grandparents were sheep farmers and they sold wool for a living. It was very hard work, but I promise that was infinitely more satisfying that working for some corporation in a cubicle. I’m talking about doing a job that is meaningful and gives you a greater sense of purpose. You don’t get that when you work for someone else

In my personal experience the hobbyist approach works best if the side job is in the same field as the life purpose if not it’s very easy to become too busy or too tired to work on your purpose during your free time because you want to rest or the money is good enough for you to not experience any financial strife so you could end up becoming too comfortable to pursue the life’s work.
Right now I’m all in and although the financial hardship kills me from time to time it’s still better than working at some slave plantation that requires me to wear a mask and be vaccinated for an illness I know was manufactured to further enslave us, I’ll die on my feet before my knees good buddy

And I'm sure the same is true of other creative pursuits. However, we wouldn't change a thing. Music is life-affirming for us 😊 Definitely follow your passions with all your vigor! Thank you for your channel.

You get remunerated by how much others value you. If you don’t bring value to others - ie they are unwilling to give their money to you for your services - then that’s not on the system, it’s on you.

As a visual artist I concur. While the internet has created more opportunities it has also created far greater competition than ever before. Today success requires a level of marketing activity that detracts from the creative act itself, in other words you have to love marketing as much as creating to become successful.

I wrote notes. This became longer than I expected. Sharing anyway. Re-stating in mostly my words took work and effort. I'm kind of tired now lol. And, I believe that what I wanted to take away from this video sunk in more because I put in this effort to wrestle with it and write. (putting some of my video takeaways into practice!)
    --------
Striving for uncommon success, think of the activity to be: (1) intrinsically rewarding (otherwise would stop doing it). (2) offer the potential for financial rewards (and for me, unless there is another purpose to the hobby).
Set clear goals for myself. Make my own plans and scheduling and practice keeping them (it's hard, can feel bad). My goals, plans, and schedule don't need to be the highest, biggest. Get better and compounds over time. Sometimes, the baseline changes almost imperceptibly and it feels like I'm not doing anything at all. Sometimes it just feels better to do something in a moment that's a big jump. More dopamine. More excitement.
Tension of: Best - Realistic. Challenging - Accomplishable. Flexibility - Holding to my plan. Bad feelings - Good feelings. Comfort - Discomfort. Fun - Work.
I am working on pushing through my own resistance and discomfort. It can feel bad, so it's hard. Example: snoozing my alarm in the morning. Being unrealistic of what time I can get up is also defeating.
-- Procrastination, perfectionism, self-doubt, and complacency.
-- Resistance and discomfort. "I don't want to do this right now. I don't feel like doing this right now. I don't need to really do this (right now). I don't believe and think I can do this (right now)."
    Big Tips:
-- Put myself in the physical location where my work gets done.
-- Place my hands and physical self on, in, or with the tools needed. (example: self on a surfboard, in a pair of ballet shoes, hand holding a makeup brush or a pen)
Sustain my own attention and resist distraction. Dedicated focus on what I do and want to do for a sustained period of time. This sustained time can be extended. Be deliberate on how, when, and how much of my own attention I give out. There are constant bids for this attention from society, companies, people.
And there is room for fun and enjoyment!

My weakness is the 3rd in your video; distraction. Along with it is a lack of organization. I took on a very difficult job for very little pay when compared to the stress and barebones expenses all to learn a skill. This skill is only for a plan b source of income just in case at any point i need it. My plan a is my lifes purpose and its very very hard to juggle being a father, a fiance, and 100% our household income earner.

I must say my solution to short attention span is not to fix the duration but to improve the ability to multitasking. The ability to understand something without a proper focus needed on something. It's like you're working hard on the ability to skim, and then try to fill the void with hypothesis then confirm my hypothesis with focus research once I need the specific knowledges. I never set my believe in stone and always confirm the facts, so that I never need to actively remember something. I'm fine with incomplete memories because I'm appreciate the idea of hypothesis.

For those struggling with procrastination or barriers to start. I have a good advice. Brake a small barrier in you life. Try to quite one little thing, that might be a bit unnecessary, like not eating your meals with excessive amounts of unhealthy sauces. It has to be done consciously. The idea is to get into a state of momentum. This makes it easier to brake another barrier and go for example earlier to bed and might lead to spend less time on your phone and so on. With your newly freedom, you can finally start to do your passion on a regular basis.

i love your channel and your voice and your mindset and especialy your reluctance to place quantity of video posting over quality.
youtube is now moving towards rewards short attention spans by emphasizing competition with tiktok and shifting their algorithmic rewards to content creators accordingly. thus, good content is now being punished.
see this as a test of spirit and persistence. google may know not what they do, but even if they do, then they do. one must make the world one wants, i see you want a world of focus and thus you are creating it as such.
