I think the grubs are counting the damage they deal to themselves because there's no way they're doling out as much as the item claims. One solid grub augment is Apex Inventor, since the cooldown is reduced from 5 seconds to 1.25, meaning you can have as many as 12 grubs active at a time. Minionmancer is also a good augment for it, though I'm not sure if their degen rate is max health-based so it may not allow multiple waves to be active at the same time.
