The Laskarid dynasty was pretty competent, I wonder if a bigger revival of the empire could have occurred if they were not overthrown by Palaiologos.
Huge yes! With all the talk about how the State would have survived had it held on to Anatolia, the Laskarids had the western portion locked down with their version of the theme system of soldier-farmer defence which built on the efforts of Alexios, John II and Manuel in the area.
I think it not be hard to do better than Andronikos II when it came to defending Asia Minor.
@@EasternRomanHistory great video as always! Will there be a military under John III video as well? Curious to see the force that went from survival mode to attack mode, up to the point of the recon quest of Constantinople
A similar situation with the Komnenos Dynasty downfall.
John III and Constantine V are probably the most underrated East Roman emperors I've read about
One of the greatest emperors ever
I consider the Laskarid dynasty one of the best if not the best ruling dynasty of the empire. The knew the problems and they tried to fix them at their root.
I think they were competent enough, But certainly arent the best.
you know its a spicy video when the rise of nation music hits
It seemed appropriate.
Glad you still post periodically, much enjoy your vids.
Imagine that there would've been no Anatolia left for the Empire to survive, without Alexios Comnenos's Reconquista of the western Asia Minor !
That was more John II than Alexios
John III. The best thing ever happened since John II. Too bad that it was the last. A great Emperor, and Saint of the Orthodox church.
Very informative
Excellent video. You really make Byzantia come to life in a way many others can't.
Please do his military accomplishments!
I will do a biographical video him eventually.
Wonderful content on the Byzantine bonus agricola.
Despite how much successful Emperor John III is, I cannot helped but still beliving that the Roman Empire after the 1204 is beyond saving already. What do you think about this? Do you think the Roman Empire after the Sack of Constantinople is politically beyond saving?
No, the fact that Theodore I was able to rescue Anatolia and within 20 years consolidate most of Asia Minor demonstrates to me that the empire was not doomed to fall. If you are looking at 1453 and thinking of the empire only in terms of when it was going to collapse then you will probably only view the period after 1204 as one of doom and decline, but from my studies it seems clear that this was not the case. From 1204-1282, the empire continued to expand and go from strength to strength. Even after the disastrous reign of Andronikos II, the empire was able to recover quite quickly under his successor. So for at least 140 years, the empire was reviving and expanding more often than it was declining.
@@EasternRomanHistory Thanks for your opinion. Maybe you should do a video about this. After all, most documentaries often said that "Constantinople after 1204 is beyond saving" all the times. Heck, even most people in nowadays on the streets even speak that regularly when the Eastern Roman history after 1204 is brought up.
Love this channel
Thank you.
John III: The last great Emperor of the Romans.
Theodoros II would have been really good as well, had he not been unlucky to get epilepsy/cancer.
Nice video!
Oh indeed, it was a pleasure to make.
thank you for this info on a little know period.
It is always a pleasure. It always surprises me how interested people are about this period, which often gets written off.
new tierlist vid when?
Sometimes i wonder how differents the empire of Nicea would have been if they didnt focus so much on taking back Constantinople but instead tried to conquor back lands in Anatolia before turning to Constantinople, is it even relevant to wonder ? I dont know.
What's your thoughts on this ? Thanks for the video
Because he was smart he knew full well that Constantinople is impossible to conquer without taking thrace and hellas regions first its like what happened when the ottoman did the same
@@rickyyacine4818ellas regions? You mean Macedonia, because saying Greece and Thrace are separate regions is like saying the same about Anatolia and Cappadocia. One is the peninsula the other is the region.
@@Michael_the_Drunkard no I just said it like that to more specifice
I suppose if they drew to far into Anatolia then they would have been far more in danger of the Mongols than they were. Not been destroyed by the Mongols was probably a good thing.
@@EasternRomanHistory I really wish they did Anatolia was key for Byzantine survival had they at least reconquer capadocia I think even if mongol take it it would have been retaking the turks were far more dangerous then mongol because turks lasted there mongol didn't they like Bulgaria once they entered the Danube river they is no going back to this day
It doesn't matter if you take their capital. When in Rome, do as the romans, but outside of Rome they'll still be romans
Hes the best Emperor of the Laskarid Dynasty. The Eastern Roman Empire was perishing and he saved it.. for a while.
To those who claim that thhe ERE was doomed after the fall of Constantinople by the Latins. Had it not been for the unraveling of his reforms during Michael VIII, the Empire might have survived.
I'd say that there was a chance under Andronikos III for the Byzantines to be a regional power centered around Greece, even in the 1440s the Byzantines were slowly regaining land in Southern Greece; had Constantine XI treated the Ottoman threat a little more better, the Byzantines might have survived.
@@Urlocallordandsavior
Andthey were probably not being called Byzantines since this term only was coined after the final fall of Constantinople.
I certainly agree with your first point. Although Michael VIII, did undermine Asia Minor a bit, he did return in his last years to set things right. It is really the reign of Andronikos II where the empire's hold of Asia Minor unravels.
Was Nicea still seen as an important center after the retaking of Constantinople?
Definitely, it was the capital of Asia Minor and a major city.
A small idea : what if Anatolia kept thier defensive strategy like 8 century the old thematic system and better what if they build a wall in Torres mountains covering the areas are not protected in Anatolia the Byzantine could have lasted forever all of this nonsense would never happened even if western Byzantine bullkans all falls it could have easily retaking in time Anatolia was the key to Byzantine survival in fact leo the third knew this that why he pushed the arabs to invade by seas rather inland it because capadocia Anatolia was key region if it fall all is over
Rise of ottoman empire season 2 review please make video
I don't believe they cover anything Byzantine related in series 2, which is a bit outside my remit, unfortunately.
Vlad the Impaler real Dracula see rise of ottoman
Theodore II doesn't seem to have followed John III directly.
Bulgaria is ruling Wallachia then
All of johns are good emperors excepted john 5th I still wonder had Michael the 8th didn't do coup against john 4 the laskares dynasty might saved Anatolia from disaster maybe even retaking sipon and tribazon 🤔🤔 better then Michael the 8 disaster neglecte of Anatolia
John I Tzimiskes, John II Komnenos, and John III Doukas Vatatzes were all great rulers. The rest were unlucky. John IV was a child who was murdered, John V was a child turned Ottoman puppet, John VI was an usurper hit by the Black Death and terrible twists (Serbian invasion, Ottoman raids), John VII died young, and John VIII was in a hopeless situation.
imagine if Theodore submitted to the komenio things would have been very different
