    The Laskarid dynasty was pretty competent, I wonder if a bigger revival of the empire could have occurred if they were not overthrown by Palaiologos.

      Huge yes! With all the talk about how the State would have survived had it held on to Anatolia, the Laskarids had the western portion locked down with their version of the theme system of soldier-farmer defence which built on the efforts of Alexios, John II and Manuel in the area.

      I think it not be hard to do better than Andronikos II when it came to defending Asia Minor.

    I consider the Laskarid dynasty one of the best if not the best ruling dynasty of the empire. The knew the problems and they tried to fix them at their root.

    Despite how much successful Emperor John III is, I cannot helped but still beliving that the Roman Empire after the 1204 is beyond saving already. What do you think about this? Do you think the Roman Empire after the Sack of Constantinople is politically beyond saving?

    • @EasternRomanHistory
      @EasternRomanHistory  Рік тому +8

      No, the fact that Theodore I was able to rescue Anatolia and within 20 years consolidate most of Asia Minor demonstrates to me that the empire was not doomed to fall. If you are looking at 1453 and thinking of the empire only in terms of when it was going to collapse then you will probably only view the period after 1204 as one of doom and decline, but from my studies it seems clear that this was not the case. From 1204-1282, the empire continued to expand and go from strength to strength. Even after the disastrous reign of Andronikos II, the empire was able to recover quite quickly under his successor. So for at least 140 years, the empire was reviving and expanding more often than it was declining.

      @@EasternRomanHistory Thanks for your opinion. Maybe you should do a video about this. After all, most documentaries often said that "Constantinople after 1204 is beyond saving" all the times. Heck, even most people in nowadays on the streets even speak that regularly when the Eastern Roman history after 1204 is brought up.

    To those who claim that thhe ERE was doomed after the fall of Constantinople by the Latins. Had it not been for the unraveling of his reforms during Michael VIII, the Empire might have survived.

      I'd say that there was a chance under Andronikos III for the Byzantines to be a regional power centered around Greece, even in the 1440s the Byzantines were slowly regaining land in Southern Greece; had Constantine XI treated the Ottoman threat a little more better, the Byzantines might have survived.

      I certainly agree with your first point. Although Michael VIII, did undermine Asia Minor a bit, he did return in his last years to set things right. It is really the reign of Andronikos II where the empire's hold of Asia Minor unravels.

    A small idea : what if Anatolia kept thier defensive strategy like 8 century the old thematic system and better what if they build a wall in Torres mountains covering the areas are not protected in Anatolia the Byzantine could have lasted forever all of this nonsense would never happened even if western Byzantine bullkans all falls it could have easily retaking in time Anatolia was the key to Byzantine survival in fact leo the third knew this that why he pushed the arabs to invade by seas rather inland it because capadocia Anatolia was key region if it fall all is over

      John I Tzimiskes, John II Komnenos, and John III Doukas Vatatzes were all great rulers. The rest were unlucky. John IV was a child who was murdered, John V was a child turned Ottoman puppet, John VI was an usurper hit by the Black Death and terrible twists (Serbian invasion, Ottoman raids), John VII died young, and John VIII was in a hopeless situation.
