- So I've been buying a lot of stuff from gamestop recently... I decided to buy a refurbished PS3 this time. It's supposed to be an 80GB model. What should I buy next??

sad part is they legitimately use sand paper so if someone trades in a ps3 with very deep scratches they use sand paper to smooth ot out no joke!!!! 😳

You can use car wax to bring the shine back (that’s what I did )

It took 2/3 times but it slowly worked just watch the PlayStation logo on it
You can also use Rust-Oleum high gloss clear spray to make it really shiny. You have to be careful not to get the clear coat in the vents or disc slot. Just remember to spray in even coats 12” or more away and in a left to right motion...keep moving without lingering in one spot or there may be drips. Best results are from multiple light coats, allowing it to dry between coats. I stuffed tissue in the holes but you can use tape too.

Just as a warning, NEVER leave the fat units plugged in if you pay for power. Those things take more power than FIVE full size fridges. I think that model might be the one that blew, like constantly during excessive play. Also holy hell I've seen better looking systems in Goodwills than that thing.
That seems like you had a faulty ps3. I've never seen one where the fan stayed on while powered off. I've heard that using remote play can make your ps3 run constantly even when powered down.
try a headlight restoration kit on that case. 3m, or Mothers would probably be best. Just make sure to take the case off before trying this, as wet sanding is involved, and you don't want the compound used in the final polishing getting on the board.
You may be able to use plex polish to repair the surface of that case. Bottles of three different grades, heavy, medium, and fine. First, try using, 1500 and 2000 grit wet/dry sandpaper, wet. then use the plex polish.
I bought my ps3 from value village for 20$ came with a bunch of games installed on it and black ops 2 in the disc drive
The ps3 wasn't a bad machine but would have benefitted from a unified memory pool instead of dividing it in half 256mb for video ram and 256mb for system ram games would have run better with a unified memory architecture similar to what Microsoft did with Xbox 360
Highly recommended but if you wanna make it last a lot longer highly recommend you mod it and run it at a custom fan speed i have it on my slim and fat and they’re both going strong, And nope it’s supposed to be super glossy someone definitely used steel wool or sand paper on that

Brillo pad was used for sure.... go to ur local "CAR" auto paint store and get some RACEGLAZE then cheese cloth and do it in a circular motion while pressing firmly.....dont do the whole thing at once...break it up in quarters.....then wax when done ...YES CAR WAX!!! I have brought back old fenders to three wheelers back with a buffer with that stuff .....I could do that in a minute!!!! But taping off the vents with masking tape....very easy!!! If u got any questions feel free....I've been doing surface repairs for years.....car headlights are about the samething as doing that...I said "ABOUT' the samething!!.....plastic with clearcoat paint.....
I bought a Wii U from GameStop and the gloss on the Wii U was wiped off as well. They also gave me a white gamepad with the black console.

Personally I would be pissed if they sent me a console looking like that. More than likely they used a cleaner with amonia that took the gloss away. I bought 3 when it first released. The backwards compatible was a 60 GB. I gave that to my son making him promise never to sell it because of the exclusive hardware inside. I have 2 80 GB systems 1 of which is boxed up. The other I keep along side of my PS4 and PS4 Pro. You can purchase skins for the PS3 which IMO would be a good buy in your case. Just Google PS3 skins. I bought a Panther skin for my main one to protect it from wear and dust. Good Luck and enjoy your PS3.
I bought an used Xbox one X 1tb model recently from GameStop , turned out way better than I expected it looked brand new.
UPDATE : Took back everything I told, My HDD died and stuck with E105 error :( Hope I get a refund from gamestop.

I have a Fatt boy 40g drive. I"ve had him for 11 year. Never had a problem, but now, the thermal paste dried. I'm going to try to fix it. I have a ps4, but I still like my ps3 games!!!
The 60gig model has the finish gloss not the 80 gig
Go to harbor freight and get you a headlight lense restoration kit. Use a drill with the foam pad and compound on it. I guarantee it will make it shine like new. I use it to polish my CDs and games and it works like a champ!
I was more shocked that you payed 99$ for this FAT version. I bought a super slim at a pawnshop a few years ago for 5$ because it was supposed to be broken. I took it home reloaded the software and I have been using it ever since.

The ps2 fat models were all glossy. That one you got from gamestop was poorly refurbished. If you want to try to bring back the gloss Try a little meguires restore or if you like the matte finish. Use some scotch brite not to abrasive to touch it up more. The matte does not look that bad. I think someone did that because they didn't like getting finger prints all over it.

Many people saying sandpaper. Jokes aside, Gamestop probably used a dish scrubber with one side sponge one side that hard side sponge you see. Its enough to mess it up like that. If they used sand paper they shouldnt be fired from gamestop they should be fired from everything.

I would take the case apart put painters tape on the logo sand it all down even and prime the case and spray paint a high gloss piano black paint and then after It is done polish it with nufinish
They probably had to take those decals stickers that u can get like pictures on it once before and they had to get that decal graphics ..

the fat model tends to crap out after heavy use the super slim loads a little faster and the games look a little better.
This is why you don't buy glossy consoles from them.

So at game stop they were selling ps2's for 65$ whereas Reset was sellin them for 30$ and in very good condition not only that they also sold the ps3 with 320gb for 120$ dude ur gettin ripped off at gamestop i usually never go there anymore i get really good deals from reset bc i go there alot and ik the owner and most of the Employees. Get gud go to Reset 😂😂

The K models are not backwards compatible at least for PS2. All PS3's can play PS1 games though. If you want native backwards compatibility without custom firmware. You want the A, B, I believe C or E models.

I used to work for Gamestop, and yes the unit is supposed to be glossy. The previous owner (not everyone takes good care of their consoles) had deep gashes and scratches on the console, and Gamestop used a light sandpaper trying to even it out (sometimes they use a black skin over the scratches).

If your needs will be met with Linux I think you will be quite happy with it. I would check out Kubuntu if you want to try it.

Had to go through the setup to see if the ps2 game worked. Not once ONCE did he show under the gate to the left of disc slot to see the 2 or 4 USB slots!!!
