To the Sea!
This is a song composed and written for gayageum byeongchang performance, with a take on a scene from the traditional Korean opera “Sugung-ga” (The Tale of the Water Palace). In this scene, the rabbit is tricked by the turtle into believing that he will become the training general of an army if he goes to the Water Palace. Excited by the prospect, the rabbit looks eagerly forward to visiting the Water Palace.
The composer and lyricist of this piece, Lee Seon, is a recognized master of the Gayageum Sanjo and Byeongchang, designated as Important Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 23. Lee Seon has also received accolades including the KBS Korean Traditional Music Award and the Presidential Award. Lee has also released a gayageum byeongchang album series titled “Hwayang-Yeonhwa” (meaning “In the Mood of Love”) and music videos. Her efforts offer an opportunity for culture lovers to rediscover the allure of traditional Korean songs through videos.

이 곡은 수궁가에서 자라가 토끼에게 용궁에 가면 훈련대장이 될 것이라고 꾀어서
그 말에 설렌 토끼가 훈련대장이 되겠다고 용궁이 있는 바다로 가자면 설레하는 대목을 가야금병창곡으로 작사/작곡한 곡이다.
이곡을 작사/작곡한 이선은 이선은 국가무형문화재 제23호 가야금산조 및 병창 이수자이며
KBS국악대상 및 대통령상을 수상한 이력이 있다.
또한 창작가야금병창 시리즈 “화양연화” 음반과 뮤비를 발표해 우리 소리의 흥미를 재발견하는 시간을 영상을 통해 제공하고 있다.
