That is a lot of trouble just to grow water melons. In Australia we just plant some seeds on a hill and come back in a couple of months to pick the melons which in most cases look better than these ones. One of the advantages of fertile soils and a good climate.

Most likely they want to restrict branching of the vines. Otherwise this will reduce the yield of the watermelons.
