  • Adya explains that the part of us that is searching for awakening is not that which awakens-true nature is already there, lying dormant until we awaken to it. Excerpted from April 19, 2009, Palo Alto Meeting, “Conscious Freedom”: bit.ly/45lLsj7

Quote from this Video: “The odd thing about our own awakening is the thing that wants to be sufficient, the thing that wants to be enlightened, the me that wants to arrive there and find God or whatever, that’s not the thing that wakes up.” adyashanti.org

Then what is the link between practice and awakening? What is the cause-effect relationship between practice and awakening, if any?

It is the main question in all spirituality, and from my own experience you will eventually find that there does not exist any real relationship between the two.
Because that what you think of spiritual practice is generally only nonsense and concept about it, so it is already wrong direction but a common starting point.

"Enlightenment is an accident. Practice(s) make you accident prone." -Been attributed to a bunch of people
But seriously speaking, I think it's worth checking out Shinzen Young's work, and his book Science of Enlightenment. He's honest to goodness trying to figure out how to measure, quantify, model, predict, and speed up the Enlightenment process.

@@johnpienta4200 There cannot happen anything without your intention, especially in the realm of mind. Insight can happen accidentally - but you just will not be ready for this and won't take it as you should, so only through the period of practice in a "solid" sense and so called spiritual seeking your perspective on spirituality will gradually change and eventually you understand - that it is actually very simple and natural state of being and it has nothing to do with anything that you thought of earlier

Energy saving, by reducing over-effort-ing, can become accustomed to in meditation, so that reactivity learns subconsciously that it is advantageous to relax more and more. That's why many Advaita types (Rupert Spira / Francis Lucille / Jean Klein / & Direct Path Buddhists) want people to be more effortless in their noticing, noting, mindfulness, etc., because there's more tension to uncover in the body and mind to make conscious for release. The self-concept is just a thought formation connected with stress that motivates a need to control the environment, and even mimics being a "meditator" that is "doing" the meditation, with the typical energy loss of over-effort-ing. Conceptual stories build up our self-esteem or tear it down. People can get exhausted after decades of boring, abusing, judging, and ruminating that mental wiring into a fried state of stress and boredom-tolerance with over-effort-ing. It's true that activities require SOME effort in all cases, but it's possible to create habits of over-effort-ing going back decades and they are more likely to repeat throughout life until they are seen clearly and repeatedly.
For example, sense organs, consciousness, and breathing do not require any extra tightness in the muscles to operate, because they already behave automatically. Insight Meditation makes you aware of how the mind is hurting itself, because thoughts are connected to stressful reactions and tensions in the body, and since the mind wants automatically to save energy, it will start to bend towards relaxation, even in regular activities. You eventually partake of typical activities, including ones that increase reactions in you, and while the mind may start to bend towards a familiar reactivity, it ends up turning around on its own and relaxing instead, simply because your mindfulness practice has made conscious your personal style of reactivity over and over again. You go from unconscious incompetence in mindfulness to unconscious competence. It happens by itself because preferences for relaxation, peace, and unperturbability are seen clearly as being more advantageous to the subconscious mind, but only if you pay attention.
Each mindful moment, of a reaction that is bubbling up, keeps enough distance to notice the potential wasted energy in following a painful story, for example, and shining that light of awareness each time, releases the self-hurting back to neutral, because saving energy is more enjoyable and self-motivating to the sub-conscious. If you repeatedly notice in real time the vibrations and sensations as they arise in reactivity, the clinging will release on its own. No need to yank the attention span, but a light noticing is enough. Over time the unconscious mind starts to do that on its own because it remembers events of prior reactivity and automatically chooses the advantageous path, just like your unconscious choices and skills do, but are often taken for granted in daily life. You just have to be mindful of unconscious negative content that repeats in your particular circumstances. New experiences and fresh traumas require some more mindful noticing to integrate and release.
Insight practices go in a more opposite direction from regular Concentration practices, though they can work together as concentration becomes more effortless with practice, and it also has its own way of providing a comparison for the mind against other possibly dangerous forms of adventure you enjoy in the world. Effort in concentration is similar to how TENSION and RELEASE appears in rewarding worldly activities. Here you are applying tension to keep the mind on the breath like a game, and you go into similar worldly flow states and periods of release that are familiar, but without needing to spend money or a requirement to ingest any mind altering substances.
With insight, you recognize instead that consciousness is automatic as soon as you wake up in the morning and you choose to accept the invitation to marinate in the vibrations of experience, and let the boundaries of the body relax and fade. With a lot of fading in a secluded sitting practice, it can go into the dimensionless, timeless, subconscious, which can jumpstart the practice to relax even more tense muscles you didn't think you had, like found in the body with breathing or facial muscles with reacting. Awareness just arises complete with an experience of Subject/Object/Time in a 3D refresh rate, like gaps between stills in motion picture film, and with an already prepared yearning, craving, or a sense of lack to chase objects when there's no wisdom. Wisdom increases as habitual relaxation deepens. Repeatedly seeing those tensions, with conscious mindfulness, gradually reduces the world's hold on your reactivity. As this deepens, then Enlightenment is said to be deepening.

Im reading your book "the end of your world" you mentioned multiple times that every motivation and act "we" make has nothing to do with enlightenment (because there is no me or you) but ego is pulling us from the state of realization or enlightenment. But funny thing is "you" wrote books, make youtube contents and etc to make money. I was confused and depressed by reading your words. It's like every decision i make only takes me apart from enlightenment.

No it doesnt take you away from it. It simply doesnt have anything to do with it.
Just like how, after one has become enlightened, his or her life (in the practical sense of the word) will basically still continue as before (although slightly different).
Mind you this explanation, nor Adyashanti's explanation, are never truely 100% accurate because enlightenment is not understood scientifically.
Theyre just pointers, pointing to a truth that so far can only be experienced but not understood with the mind. So, take them as such. Let them lead you towards a personal, experiential understanding of it. (Experiential understanding VS intellectual understanding, u understand?)
      Hope this this helps

@@rockstar7565 that matters only to the ego / to the unenlightened! When enlightened, you are simply happy, and if you are happy you dont mind about such things! Even though its still very interesting.
Now goals can still be a thing when Enlightened. Like, writing a book for other ppl to help them, for instance. Or just generally doing what you have to do to have or keep a roof over ur head and have food to eat etc etc etc. Or for ur fam.

@@JorisWeima so we still have ego in us even after enlightened and since nothing can be seperated from so called the christ conciousness, what ego wants is also a part of the state of enlightenment?

    • @JorisWeima
      @JorisWeima 11 місяців тому

@@rockstar7565 yes ego / sense of self stays after enlightenment. Both before and after enlightenment it can be made to go away temporarily, but it will come back naturally. Ego/SoS is not the problem, but rather it is (in the words of certain teachings) "identification with the ego" that is the problem.
When one does Enlightenment practice, it is indeed "the ego that does that". Theres no other way basically. And therefore its nothing bad. Ego is nothing bad either. Its "identification with it" thats the problem.
Btw these narratives are all sh!t (ahum). Theyre all just analogies, not the truth, not scientifically accurate. If you are interested, im creating a Psychology based method which will most probably make way more sense and be way faster. I am now at a point where I most probably already have a very workable method. Been working on it for 2 years now. If you are interested you can test it and see what happens. If you want; hmu on FB or send me a private message here or something!
