Great job and example to all of us! I had a thought a couple weeks ago after watching a few videos of pilots getting confrontational about this situation... What if instead of immediately getting defensive, we get educational? So, I've typed up some 1 page information pages on different subject such as Drone Laws, the difference between recreational and commercial part 107, safety, and other resources. I print 5 or 6 of each off and put them on clipboards on my tailgate while flying. This way, I can explain that if I take my eyes off the screen to explain things to them it could be a real safety issue but the literature over on my tailgate will answer a lot of their questions. I've had a couple people tell me that they were about to confront me about it but didn't after reading my info.
That’s a good idea. But why should we educate them? We have paid for our education, the courses we have passed. It’s not our fault they are ignorant of the law/rules. If they don’t know the rules they shouldn’t be doing the job they are doing.

I get the feeling that he 'patrols' the area, ordering wild campers to douse their campfires. I've been told by another commenter that he was approached by this particular ranger recently while he was using a paddle-board at the loch, and the ranger told him that paddle-boards were not allowed. Now, this is clearly a case of a ranger making up his own rules and trying to enforce them. most people WILL fold because they don't really know the rules and will assume that the ranger does. I'm not the type to fold ;)

Hi Peter, thanks :) The mini 3 drone (the one I'm flying in this video) is very quiet. It can't be heard - even in a quiet rural area - when it is 50m away. I think the ranger was making up stories here..!
Actually in fairness, traffic noise is generally a low pitch and kinda blends into a low hum with no one vehicle is distinguishable - unless some prat goes part with music blaring or baked bean can for an exhaust. Aircraft’s noise is completely different, individual and much more noticeable

Hi Robert - encountered a similar situation 6 months ago, checked with the CAA, and you may already know this - above 20 meters height in open category such as you were, and 50 meters flying over a building, the ranger has no say at all as the airspace above ground level is CAA controlled,,,,but must say, you handled it better than me 👍
@@WindsweptRobert Won't that raise privacy concerns? I mean you wouldn't want a drone hovering 5 meters close to your house, filming inside windows backyard etc. Same goes with schools, kindergartens. its fine if you pass by, but not just stay there.
@@WindsweptRobert Hi Robert - Not to challenge anyone, as that's not me :-)...... just sharing - Iv'e just completed the GVC Commercial Pilots License and the CAA recommend 20 meters minimum height distance AGL in open fields (as I say,,,, your situation happened to me - only I lost the top of my wee finger during the unprovoked assault),,,,, anyhow,,,, 50 Meters height for houses as the drone camera potentially begins to infringe on privacy laws (GDPR). Of course landing and take off are reduced to 5 meters, but the CAA are monitoring all flight data and will adjust the parameters accordingly. For your situation it was a clear ---- you were doing the right thing, in the right area, and the ranger was out of order. In fact as mentioned already in the comments, you could report that ranger for distracting a pilot while in flight, which could have caused more harm than anything else. BTW - Loved your quick reaction - "can I see your driving license"
We get the same with local park rangers. They can tell us we can't take off from inside the park, but they have no legal right to stop us from flying over the park. Now a Federal Park is a different story.
More and more counties are passing by bylaws banning the use of drones in any park. The danger didn't know the rules. This interaction likely just made him an enemy of all of us drone users. Sugar vs vinegar.
I felt a wee bit sorry for him when he was walking back to his vehicle. He looked very dejected. But then he drove in front of my car and parked bumper to bumper for 5 mins. Probably taking a note of my reg. He kept looking up at me for a reaction, but I just ignored him and kept flying my drone :)
Do not forget that it is prohibited to interfere with piloting work. Any Agent of the Authority should know their responsibility in the event of interference with air operations. You must be patient to wait for the safe landing and completion of the operation to begin your legitimate work.
Thought I would make this clear for anyone who has questions about it. A “UAS” is comprised of 3 parts. The aircraft, the controller, and the pilot. When the aircraft is flying in FAA airspace which is everywhere in the US below 400 feet it is illegal to interfere with any of those 3 entities. Needless to say you need to be following the rules as a pilot yourself but if you are in complete compliance and someone interferes with you, your controller, or your aircraft it is the same crime as interfering with a commercial airliner. 73 KG7POU { I KNOW THIS VIDEO ISNT FORM THE USA BUT THOIUGHT ID SHARE}
It's happening everywhere - I used to find an empty local park to practice, now I have to drive 10 miles to get out of my city (Central Canada) and fly in a town where I hope they don't have anti-drone/plane ordinances. People forget this is a hobby and is done for relaxation and mental health as much as anything else - I wonder if we responded that our psychiatrist/psychologist told us flying was therapeutic and good for our mental health how some of these brownshirts would react.
Completely agree, Mickey. I am well aware of the osprey nest and the new hatchlings. I know where the nest is but would never walk or fly anywhere near it. I probably know more about the area than he does. He should have come up to me, greeted me, and asked if I was aware of the osprey nest. Then we would have had a nice conversation. But to come up and ask "Whit are you doing?" Then tell me "No Drones!" Well, that's just getting the conversation off to a poor start, isn't it? :)
Correct theres ways to approach someone and then theres what this top hat did...i fully agree..always fly a good distance from birds..especially predatory species eagles hawks circling a large area..thats there home..they will defend it..then both sides loose..be respectful to nature, and enjoy flying 🤘

All the ranger was trying to do was to protect the osprey nest, theirs been numerous people disturbing it, but he went about it the completely wrong way.
I absolutely agree, Mark. I am completely pro nature/wildlife and I do my own bit to preserve my natural local environment. I would have loved to have had a decent conversation with that ranger, but his obnoxious initiation of the conversation made me decide that no good would come of talking to him, so I saw him off in my own way as quickly as possible.
I'm not trying to be snarky here, but the way I've seen raptors go after drones, I'd say the drone was in more danger than the osprey.
All he had to do was explain himself and not be a completely agro pillock ...
@@militarymarch3006 raptors yes, but other birds get spooked by drones and it can do real harm to their breeding seasons. They're incredibly disrusptive.
I'm kind of amazed at how so many comments here say that the drone pilot handled the situation brilliantly. Depressing.
That's definitely a good way to go about it, Matthew :)
Great idea, any chance you could share these information sheets?

Great idea!
That’s a good idea.
But why should we educate them?
We have paid for our education, the courses we have passed.
It’s not our fault they are ignorant of the law/rules.
If they don’t know the rules they shouldn’t be doing the job they are doing.
I love this, the assertive nature of your response makes these guys realize it's an uphill fight. I'm guessing these guys are used to people just folding on their requests and your response almost threw him off enough that he wasn't prepared for what's to follow up with.
This Ranger clearly bored
bloody brilliant how you handled that my man, top notch, quick and confident responses...loved it

These same miscreants live on a busy road where they ignore loud truck and other traffic noise but if they THINK they hear a distant helicopter, they are on the phone in seconds sigh...
Hi Peter, thanks :)
The mini 3 drone (the one I'm flying in this video) is very quiet. It can't be heard - even in a quiet rural area - when it is 50m away. I think the ranger was making up stories here..!

Very true.
Actually in fairness, traffic noise is generally a low pitch and kinda blends into a low hum with no one vehicle is distinguishable - unless some prat goes part with music blaring or baked bean can for an exhaust.

Of course landing and take off are reduced to 5 meters, but the CAA are monitoring all flight data and will adjust the parameters accordingly. For your situation it was a clear ---- you were doing the right thing, in the right area, and the ranger was out of order. In fact as mentioned already in the comments, you could report that ranger for distracting a pilot while in flight, which could have caused more harm than anything else. Thought I would make this clear for anyone who has questions about it. A “UAS” is comprised of 3 parts. The aircraft, the controller, and the pilot. When the aircraft is flying in FAA airspace which is everywhere in the US below 400 feet it is illegal to interfere with any of those 3 entities. Needless to say you need to be following the rules as a pilot yourself but if you are in complete compliance and someone interferes with you, your controller, or your aircraft it is the same crime as interfering with a commercial airliner. 73 KG7POU { I KNOW THIS VIDEO ISNT FORM THE USA BUT THOIUGHT ID SHARE}
