This makes me believe that Le Fanu had contact with a person living with schizophrenia and also makes me think that most people in the world still view it as a horror story. Another amazing narration from Arthur!
If you ask me, schizophrenia does not preclude the existence of malicious invisible entities. Schizophrenics (IMO) have a damaged mental defense mechanism, which allows incorporeal entities to communicate to them. If you'll research into Philip K. Dick's life, you'll notice a lot of paranoid schizophrenic symptoms, but he also communicated with VALIS, a positive, teaching entity who helped him with his social anxiety. If 'psychics' are to be believed, there are approximately 3 negative entities for every positive entity, and unfortunately for schizophrenics, the positive entities don't exactly seek out random humans and communicate with them. This is all my opinion, based on the experiences I have had with schizophrenics and individuals who proved (to me) that they were receiving information through extrasensory perception.
Always liked this one. Lots has been written about it. Can't think that perhaps the 'germain' thing is hidden in plain (but shadowy lol) view. Namely...has the clergyman basically studied the type of beliefs held by someone like Julian the Apostate? And opened a door.

It took me 3 listens (granted, while falling asleep) before i really got into this story, now i love it. I'm glad i gave it a chance.
