Only disappointing thing is absence of 4k120 which the canon r5 has at the same price point.
The main shot in this looks great, what are you guys shooting on?
The rolling shutter of the higher megapixel cameras with the exception of the A1 really take away fr the perfect hybrid category
I don’t be shooting lowlight or fast moving stuff. So if your doing highly designed controlled shots it’s really good
Is the crop 1.1x or 1.24x in 8k and 4k60? I'm reading conflicting information. 1.1x would make more sense as it would allow enough room to still do the OSS and Breathing crops and get to a total crop of 1.24x (which is 1:1 readout). The alternative is that Sony is upscaling when these modes are active.

i have a D850 and Xt4 now finally looking to add a sony in, im wanting to film broll, car cinematic reels/youtube videos, music videos, events etc, what would be the best 2 sony cameras for those jobs, and which one is better than the other ? my lense will be the G lense 24-70mm. thanks in advance
If they put that tilt/swivel screen on a A7C II, that would be a winning combination.

That's a big bummer we didn't see that excellent screen being introduced with the just been announced FX30.
Yes - that screen on a FX30 would have been fantastic. I'm excited about maybe a A7C2 with the new screen - that really would be my ideal camera with the new Tamron 20 - 40
I had the A1 and now have the A7RV. I am not a professional. Taken in isolation, the A1 is a far more capable camera, but for my purposes, the A7RV gets the job done, in a better way. The fully articulating screen, the improvements in AF and the improved in-body stabilization were worthwhile for my purposes. It is also sad that a powerful digital platform like the A1, is left to wither on the vine, with no firmware improvements……almost as if these are old analog products from decades back.
I really like all your videos, I think you have great taste on IQ and advices.
However, I still don't like you to judge dynamic range by playing with +/-EVs just like majority of camera reviewers. I still think the most essential part for DR is how that image looks in real life. When we comparing a Blackmagic pocket's (even older generations) 13/14 stops DR footage with a Sony's 14/15 stops DR footage, the BM's footage just looked obviously better DR on both high contrast bright daylight or high contrast night light lowlight condition. DR performance is definitely not only about how hard we can push the DR on a footage to recover details. For instance, a Sony A7S3 footage shot under high contrast bright sunlight or shot in a night club or night street with lights and shadows, no matter how we color grade that footage, we couldn't get it to look as good as footage shot with a pocket 4k or 6k under the same situation (of course, we may need to increase the ISO or with larger aperture since it has much smaller sensor). Good DR is also about how close the camera performs that matching what human gets from human eyes and brains. I very much wish you can put this into consideration in your future reviews. Thank you!
And Sony has been doing so great in recent years, so many fantastic features especially AF department. The one thing I asked for in many years for Sony, is that I wish they can solve the harsh highlight fallout "problem" on video, because that "problem" is just unrecoverable in post, making the video looked very amateur. Therefore, we can only shoot with a Sony in highly controlled environment so that we can avoid that harsh highlight fallout "problem", and this will increase production budget.
Steve, can you elaborate on the issues you've had with the A7S3? Seems like that is the low light king for most people

It really misses a lot of opportunities for flash photography without the 1/400s sync speed as the A1. I think it is a huge miscalculation for a high resolution camera. 😢

Thank you for this, really good analysis. Credit to Sony for a brilliant stills machine, no doubt. But for video, the crops leave me a little short of ecstatic, and the rolling shutter at 8K actually seems poor. Right now, I feel like I am in no rush, so will be waiting to see what they do with the next iteration of the A1, if there is going to be one.
A1 is kinda in a really wierd spot rn. For the price u can buy both A7Siii an A7R and have them perform best at both worlds. Obviously A1 has its own perks but it is too expensive considering what u can get for the price, kinda reason why I doubt theres gonna be an A1ii (or A2?) at all.
1:15 BSI is not new by any means. They used BSI technology since the A7R II.
The A7R V does not do 8k30. It does 8k24 in NTSC and 8k25 in PAL.
When is HD 100P Its limited to 8 bit?
Disagree with your ending blanket statement. A7IV has better 4K in the lower frame rates. (Both detail and dynamic range). Also in noise performance at low light. In most cases better than a7siii even. (Except in extreme Iso )Obviously with photos you can’t argue. It’s clearly a beast in that department. A1 is the champ though. It does all. Ahhhh who cares. They’re all amazing. Why am I even commenting?😂

You said 8k at 30 frame? I thought it maxed out at 8k 24p.
I want the A1 to get the new screen of this camera. OK I want my FX3, FX30, and A74 to get the new screen as well!

this is a very great camera, But I think A7IV is a best value Hybrid camera from Sony, It has enough resolutions and better video options, It's also more affordable than A7R V. But A7R V Has better Display and view finder which makes a bit better for user experince. But I think 30 Megapixel is a sweet spot. 61MP should be on a Medium Format sensor IMO.
It has the advantage of shooting medium raw when you want to save space then switch to full size raw when you needs some extra reach. Its like extending a lens really. I'd like one with the tamron 20-40 its my ideal setup for quick social media work. Yes I know Ive got more res than I need but its very handy to have
@few boys cooking channel A74 would make more sense because its cheaper - you don't need the A7R5 for that, its overkill
I can't see that a gap between the A7IV and the A1 even existed. It was invented for the A7RV. Yeah, it has a smaller crop in 4K60 than the A7IV, but it still has one. Yeah, it can shoot 8K30 - but costs 2.000 $ / € more, and still lacks 4K120 that the A1 has. And there's no Prores RAW, internally or externally, as it seems (no one has addressed that yet anyway). Yeah, it has 61MP - but that's not filling a gap between 33MP and 50MP, does it. The AF is a little better - but the A7IV lacks absolutely nothing in terms of autofocus, why would I pay for unneeded redundancy, the A7IV's AF is already stellar, a better AF fixes a non-existent problem. I can't see the need for this camera. Best Hybrid at a good price? Go A7IV. Want to go all the way in? Get the A1. But "get a little more than the A7IV at 2.000 more" - who needs that?

The fact that you can shoot 4k-60 with much less of a crop (no 1.5x does not equal 1.2x)
Best auto-focus in any sony camera
And all that for 2000 less than A1 price.
I'm not trying to say you are wrong, I'm just saying depending on how you word your argument, it can change the perspective. Im sure this is a perfect camera for some people - it dosent mean it has to be for you in particular.
Go for the a7iv if thats what works for you, but having more options is never a bad thing.
@@meladkareme5851 Its pretty obvious the A7RV should've been an 80-100 megapixel stills focused camera.
The fact that it barely ups the A1 in megapixel count and still misses the A1 in the video department makes it basically an A7 IV +" meant for people who don't want to fork the money for an A1.
At the end of the day Sony missed the mark! We don't need more hybrids.
IMO this camera is perfect for nobody except someone who has an A7Riv and is going to trade it in. No one else in the right mind would buy it
@@sharkylal who is we? And who said we even want a 100 megapixels? You have a very entitled mindset. Despite what you think sony does not cater to you specifically.
As i said this camera is positioned for those people who will be able to make use of it - just because you lack the knowledge or imagination to see who those people are doesn’t mean they dont exist.
You say 100 megapixels like that is the norm. None of the competition have a 100 megapixels FF body so clearly it is not a requirement by the majority of professionals, secondly i would rather have performance, speed and reliability over Megapixels out in the field any day of the week.
If you are open to meaningful discussion with clear pros and cons than we can debate this further, if you are going to be a spoilt child like your last comment, consider this my last say on the matter.
Also what is your background in photography, i am curious to know why you need a 100 megapixels...

I just felt like this is not what people were looking for in the new RV. Slower flash sync than a1, same megapixels but tilt screen and supreme autofocus? Like why didn't the video cameras get the better autofocus and screens first? And then the rolling shutter. That's the puzzler for most of the Sony fans. The camera is epic but its like a tease on new tech that can't be utilized.
I really only shoot video but I take photos for fun. I use an older ccd digital camera for that. I'm not sure who needs 100 megapixels. I just thought between autofocus and pixel count people would opt for pixel. Maybe I'm out of the loop.
Sony hardly has any firmware upgrades for most of their Alpha cameras.
So B&H shows the A7RIV (A model) has a 2.4Million Dot resolution monitor, and the A7RV has a 2.1Million dot resolution monitor. So this new camera has a WORSE resolution monitor than the older one? (not that its noticeable or anything, but its interesting to note)

We didn't get time to do high ISO tests unfortunately. Very limited window with the camera i'm afraid!

The 8K rolling shutter looks bad. The panning doesn't even look that fast.
