I live in Midtown and this initiative is so necessary. I cannot stand all the noise and pollution being caused by people who commute in from the suburbs. This is a great step towards being more like a walkable European city.
I just moved to the congestion pricing zone. I can confirm the amount of traffic and the way drivers are behaving even when they are or are not driving has unhinged. We should cut on-street parking in the congestion pricing zone as well.
Yep. That’s one good thing about the bike shares they’ve reduced the amount of parking spaces, it’s gone too far now with hostile drives. The noise and air pollution only compounds the issue
Traffic congestion pricing has existed in LA for 25 years in the form of toll lane expressways that are far more expensive during rush hour vs off peak $10-14 dollars in some areas.
I salute the idea and goal in concept, but it feels like this will only punish the poor and those who can't afford the toll day-to-day. The city will probably still have the same amount of traffic, but it'll just be a more expensive jam with more premium cars.
I think that's missing the forest through the trees a bit. Driving within a city as dense and well connected as NYC SHOULD be a luxury. If they actually use the money as intended (which granted is a big if in the US) and fund better transit coverage for everyone, why shouldn't the people who insist on coming in from outside the city via the most polluting, infrastructure destroying, space inefficient and traffic inducing method have to pay for the space and service they use? If we were talking about la in 2023 where it is almost completely infeasible to go anywhere without a car, then I would share your worry. But this is like one half of Manhattan we're talking about, with one of the most extensive transit systems in the world. The "poor" are almost certainly not the ones spending 10k a year to drive a hunk of metal into lower Manhattan. "A developed country isn't one where the poor have cars, it's where the rich take public transit" (Gustavo Petro). Cities have existed fine for hundreds if not thousands of years without cars, it's time we remember that. And if the rich want to spend their time and money on a fancy car only to get stuck in traffic, then so be it. But that doesn't give them the right to have their transportation costs subsidized at the expense of all others
Only rich people or outsiders would think it's a good idea to drive through Manhattan. Everyone else poor or not will just take the Metro. It's cheaper and faster than owning a car.
Although I would normally agree with nearly anything that brings about a reduction in car use and thereby traffic, congestion pricing will only work if public transportation is frequent and convenient. Furthermore, congestion pricing gives those who can afford it a great advantage because they'll be able to significantly reduce their commute times with less traffic (theoretically at least), and those who can't afford it, but have no choice but to drive during peak hours for whatever the reason end up taking a big financial hit.
It should be higher and there should be a ban on private vehicles. I was born in NYC and never owned a car until moving to upstate NY. The concept of owning a car in Manhattan is utterly ridiculous even if one can afford it.
@@inthedarkwoods2022 Yes I do it won't affect people who use public transportation! I once was one of the poor and then working classes growing up in NYC.

This plan is shortsighted in that it neglects to consider the radical throughfare-efficiency increases that will be realized in the next few decades due to automated vehicles. Like any other revenue-generating "solution", this new tax will never be rescinded.
"Much needed revenue for the MTA", yea lets call this for what it is, a scam. It becomes even more clearer when you hear the part about lower income drivers being excluded from the fee.
Hey poor people! Were you required to drive into the city? Well FU, only rich people can do that. Instead maybe make changes to make driving less desirable, not less affordable. Your examples are terrible, NYC and Stockholm are walkable cities with some great public transit and bike infrastructure. This is a terrible idea without first addressing the alternatives to vehicles.
Well I’m not giving up my car. But I will give up NYC. Not sure why we’re jamming millions of people onto a small island. America is a huge country and population can and should be spread out.

This worst idea to charge people that work and live in New York already paying high parking fees and bridges.
Will be interesting to see the effects of the congestion pricing next summer!

taxing people living in New Jersey driving to work in NYC
No poor people are taking their cars in Manhattan. Every city that has implemented something like this has seen decreased congestion
So now rich people can drive with less congestion.
yup and the revenue will get pissed away on absolutely nothing

Just because you were born there doesn't mean you understand how this will effect poor and working people.
Good luck banning private property.

I love the stock footage at 5:09 of the guys group salmoning on citi bikes.
Saying that the tolls have worked in London is a blatant lie.

People who drive EV's should be exempt from this rule
