"What software did you use to make that?" is a question designers get asked a lot. While it really doesn't matter what software you use to design something, it's true that different software is best for different projects, so I thought I'd go over what I use for web design, illustration, print design and more in this weeks video. I hope you enjoy hearing about it! The next design video coming to you in 3 weeks time will be talking about other designy things are in my toolkit, both software and analogue.

love this! thank you Charli for talking about this and SHOWING how each software is being used on your end. ah! i've been binge-listening to DesignLife and I can't get enough!! I wanna give you and Femke a big giant hug. You would think one would have a lot of designer friends in NYC, but nope.. im a second year graphic design student and its really good to hear what professional designers are using! so far I've only ever used Indesign, Illustrator and PS but Illustrator is by far my favourite! Im just starting to get to grips with inDesign now too!
Kerry Rose Is Sketch just for wireframes? Im new to website programming and Ive only really used Axure (for wireframes) and Dreamweaver for coding!
Kerry Rose that's so cool you're studying design! Sketch is a design program. you can use it for just wireframes but you can also lay out fully designed web pages and other graphics (just as you can in photoshop).
Never heard of Sketch but you make it look so good - need to give the trial a go

Super useful! I've just finished 2nd year at BA Graphic Design and for whatever crazy reason, we were making webdesign with Photoshop and Dreamweaver. Since Photoshop seemed such a dumb option and I didn't know about Sketch at the time, I ended up creating graphics in Illustrator. :D A fellow designer then told me about Sketch and now I've got it and was looking up tutorials on webdesign using it -that's how I found your videos. Great help really, because I want to get more into web and app design too. Thanks for making the videos!

I know, but that's what makes your channel so unique. I'm sure people who are thinking about doing design really appreciate those videos as well. I know I did :) I ended up choosing film and motion design but still, there's quite a bit of basic design stuff in there as well ;)
Ahhhh, memories! I took Graphic Design in college and we used Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator every day. I have to say, I never quite got proficient at Photoshop. It's quite complex if you don't know your way around it. I have to check out that program you were raving about, it looks so much more user-friendly!
luxlagerfeld totally agree Photoshop has almost too many things you can do with it! it's definitely still great to use for a lot of things, but for web design i find sketch much better :)
Never heard of sketch will definitely check it out! Although I do prefer working on print based designs rather than web, still a handy tool! My fav software is definitely illustrator and Photoshop.

Thanks for the video Charli. I've always wanted to learn Photoshop but found it really overwhelming. Now I'm interested in looking into Sketch instead :-)
Going Scuba Sketch can be pretty overwhelming as well, but once you get used to it its really great! :)

Joseph Michael Green I wish I spent more time in After Effects. i studied Motion Graphics at university and would love to bring more moving typography into my videos, but it takes soooo long for me cos I'm so out of practice!

Great video,you read my mind.I use Adobe applications because,Adobe did a great job putting that subscription on Adobe Creative Cloud,you can create videos,graphics,illustration,web design,I love it because I've all I need.

Thanks for this video! I'll definitely check out Sketch next time I'm designing a website. Have you ever used Adobe Muse? I used it to build my own website, as I'm not a coder.
Library at the Edge of the World i haven't! But i have heard about it. in my job i work alongside a front end developer who brings my websites to life :)

Ok, Sketch and invision blew my mind, never heard of them but totally going to try them out. Did you learn these tools from university/study or while working in the industry? Been working for 2.5 years in agency's and marketing companies in Auck and never been up skilled or introduced to them... ffs
I learned about these tools on the job! They are fairly new so that's why I didn't learn about them in design school. Glad I could introduce them to you!! Now you should go and introduce them to your agency and blow their minds!

I haven't tried it! But I want to eventually review a lot of other design software like that so i will be testing it out :)

Hi! Sorry if this will be a long comment or if you have answered these questions before but are you a freelance web designer or do you work for a company? Also, did you go to uni and if you did, did you have a lot of experience with design software before going?
Clara Fullerton No worries! Both great questions. I'm an in-house marketing designer at a software company. i made a video a while ago about a day in my life as a designer if you're interested: ua-cam.com/video/ZfFAcJNRDj0/v-deo.html and yes i did got to uni (studied a Bachelor of design with Honours) and had minimal experience with design software before I started my course. My university was one that focussed more on the critical/design thinking than how to use the software (which is what i believe good design schools should do) so I mostly learned how to use the software through watching tutorials and learning from friends! Hope that helps :)

+Shweta Shukla I'm a graphic and web designer sorry so I'm not sure what software fashion designers use! I imagine Adobe illustrator could be useful though for drawing digital fashion illustrations?

I started with the Adobe suite when I was a beginner :)
I use Photoscape to do quick editing of photos. Really handy and easy to use. ;)

Adobe XD is making a name for itself. Have you given it a try yet? Sure it is in it's meager beginnings and is no where near Sketch, but I like where it is going. It is just a matter of time that it catches up.

Katherine Wakefield - XD is still in beta, but you can copy and paste between sketch and XD so you can do interactive prototyping.

I'm pretty sure at this point I'm married to indesign, I've been using it for like 7 years now! I feel like photoshop is becoming less and less useful. I really need to get a hang of illustrator now and I'll definitely check out sketch!
Fairly Interested haha! when I did print design i was married to it too!! agree that photoshop is become less and less relevant in my workflow. i pretty much just use it to resize images now.

I wish Sketch was available for Windows! I feel left out all the time with so many things lol
GirlyFrame nawh don't feel too left out! remember you are also left out from paying like a million pounds for a computer so its a handy thing to prefer PCs ;)
its crap anyway, buggy as hell, only became popular because it became cool to use it. Just use Adobe XD

Take a look at Figma.com. It’s a Sketch competitor that runs in the browser so you can use it on Mac or PC.
