About 37 years ago I made a similar crossing (from La Spezia to Ft. Lauderdale) in my dad's 63' motor sailer. The crew was me and 5 Itaians. It was an amazing experience. No sat-nav, just a compass and sextant. We sold the boat about one year later, but I still have the charts with our course plots, and the memories.

AS far as i know you have Yacht categories (Sailing yachts excluded here since most can with a decent size) from A to D and A means atlantic crossing is possible. They are longer than 40 feet and can take on waves of up to 23 feet. These boats can also take on strong winds of at least 47 knots. The others are really not for long distances on the open sea since they can't handle certain waves and as most know the fuel would be an issue. To ensure that the yacht is actually built correctly for trips over the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, it should be certified by the International Marine Certification Institute as i learned. Its really interesting how much there is to learn in this area :)

Actually the keel blocks are placed by the ship’s crew before loading when the deck is dry. They are super heavy so we use a forklift to transfer them. And the divers’ job is to monitor if all the yachts are going to sit on keel blocks without any damage to the hull and also they put those orange supports underwater.
Regarding the grey metal supports: the chief mate identifies the location of each yacht’s frame by knocking yacht’s hull with a small hammer and then makes markings for deckhands to install the supports. Only after those supports are welded.
Unique plan for keel blocks and the supports is done for each yacht.
And when the transportation is completed they cut all the D-rings, all supports, chip and paint the deck for the next loading and start rebuilding the keel blocks according to a new cargo plan.
I know that because I’m the crew member being on board now :) I’m happy to answer any questions!
Great video, can’t wait for the next one!

    • @TheYachtEngineer
      @TheYachtEngineer Рік тому

@@Modelo646 sorry for the late reply. Roughly from $300k to $500k+ depending on the yacht size (30m to 50m) and destination.
But as far as I know it is still cheaper than doing the crossing by the yacht itself if the yacht is capable of course. (Fuel, crew wage, amortization, etc.)
Atlantic crossing would be cheaper than Pacific crossing from/to Australia.

Great video. It had to be a brave guy that first decided they could put piggy back those huge yachts. And the divers that are willing to swim under a 1000 tons of yacht to place keel blocking, as they lower the yacht onto it... I'll pass on that opportunity. But great video...THANK YOU!

The Cormorant has a better system for carrying large boats, they took lessons from the old UK graving dry docks and how heavy cargo is lash to ships decks, There is no messing about with welding and all the blocks are in place before the deck is flooded, so went fully loaded it's just a case of removing the water and steam out of harbour, in and out all on the same day

    • @southerneruk

That was really interesting again. Where else would we ever get to see and know about such vessels. Thanks Captain Tristan. Safe crossing.

@Supër Yächt Captäin▪️ I look forward to hearing your news! I listened to your chat with David Seal at the yacht show, so I knew something exciting is happening after you’ve delivered AWOL to her new captain.

    Hi Captain,
I hope you are well !
    I have 2 questions:
-could you present the yachts that are on the cargo ship ?
-will they be a new AWOL, what is your futur in that, will you work for another owner, what will happen when AWOL will arrive to the USA ?
    Kind regards,
    Arthur

Always interesting videos. From what I'm able to gather a yacht of your size , the cost could run $175K. A seamanship problem facing my uncle in WWI. He was a, "Snotty," aboard his destroyer, moored Merseyside. The order came late afternoon to make steam and join a convoy. The captain and first officer when found ashore were drunk. They were returned to the ship. My uncle had two bad choices, declare the ship unfit or take it out in blackout and run the risk of going aground. He and the Gunner's Mate took it out....carefully. The captain, the next day, didn't have the manners to say thank you.

Fascinating.. One Dig though, why where you not wearing a lifejacket, hard hat, gloves, and hard boots when checking under the boat?
