I think this is the problem with our multi-party system. There is too much overlap in terms of principles/policies between the parties. On the surface level, that seems ok, but that led us to our current state where the popularity of the candidate is given more attention than their party's principles. This seems to be changing, however.
There are overlaps, but I am not suggesting that they are all too similar. When you think about it, when a politician in the US jumps from Democratic to Republican, or vice versa, that would mean that the person has done a complete U-turn in his views/principles/policies. But in the PH politicians can jump from one party to another seemingly without compromising their core values. I remember someone saying "Who cares kung lumipat sya, sya parin naman yun.". It's not necessarily wrong to do that in a multi-party system of course, but as I have said, that created the problem where the personality is elevated above the principles.
you have a point. unfortunately in the states, with trump winning, its politics has also become a cult of personality, where the entire republican party has lost its ideologies and has just been espousing trump ideas, even if it goes against party ideals.
@@imchristan Just a caveat, I am not advocating a two-party system in the Philippines at all as it has its own problems. Political extremism for example, where extreme ideas from the left and right become more and more popular.
On politics becoming a cult of personalities, I agree. They did it with Trump and I daresay they did it with Obama as well.
However, I think Trump's policies were generally in-line with the Republican party's ideologies despite his political campaign being run like a popularity contest. Whether they were effective policies or not is another story. I also think that Trump voters are aware of what his stance is in eg. gun control, border security, and/or foreign policy when he gets elected. When they voted for him, they were voting for those policies maybe as much as they were voting for the personality.
In the PH, on the other hand, I don't think DU30 voters were all aware that they are voting for an increased occurrence of EJKs in the country. This is because people are generally more interested in the personality rather than the policies he represents. There are EJKs for sure, whether he's directly responsible for that or not is the debate.
In the US, there is a huge ongoing discussion about the opposing ideologies in the media and even among the American people. And this is my hope, that we have a battle of ideas rather than a battle of personalities.
