The story starts with the villain's pimphand being strong...
He must have played a lot of God Hand
Anyone know what music is playing before the game starts? (The music for the intro of his videos)
One of the most underrated Capcom Games released.
That intro was some Spiderman The Animated series levels of pacing
Is that a good thing or a bad thing? For a video game I thought it was pretty effective.
Hey Matt! It looks like you had fun playing my game! (I designed it) I’d love to watch you play more of it!
I played this game and the second all the time as a kid, thanks for making it :)
This was an awesome game, difficulty and pacing were right. Upgrades were fun to experiment with.
Bro me and my brother loved Maximo 1 and 2. Its so sad we never got the third game
Dude thank you! It makes me so happy to see people still talk about and love this game
That's amazing! I started replaying it and am so in love with it. So many brilliant ideas that still hold up. My dream game would be a reboot of Maximo that goes a little more Soulslike with combat (parries, dodges), interconnects the world, and has tighter platforming controls. I still have the follow-up to play and can't wait.
Top tier villainy:
1. Bring a your general back to life so you can kill him again
2. Constant evil smile on your face
3. Slap women and tell them to shut up in the middle of her talking
Fun fact: The general is the game’s lead designer.
I love this game, I'd kill for a HD remaster for both games.
Add some lock on/better cameras and it would be perfect.
A Switch portable version would be great.
@@SrWedo Good idea.
And a maximo 3
If you get a kiss from every sorceress, it unlocks an art gallery at the end.
Army of Zin is pretty good, too. Just very short. You do get to play as the Grim Reaper, though.
When I was a kid there was this mom and pop dollar store that randomly had MAXIMO figures. I had zero clue it was a video game series till a couple of years ago. I miss having those toys
I love love LOVE Maximo. They need to bring this series back ASAP
Isn't this the Spiritual Successor of Ghost n Goblins? I remember this game a long time ago.
That was the idea, yeah. They even happen in the same universe, even though the characters don't seem to ever interact directly.
Pretty much the entirety of Maximo's OST is remixes of GnG's main theme. The leitmotive is ~everywhere~ and it never leaves.
Apparently, Maximo is in the same universe as Ghost N' Goblins, forgot about that. I only know that this game is those weird designs, and has a few prominent VA's, like Wally Wingert (Arkham's Ridder/Ant-Man in Avengers EMH) as Maximo, Carlos Alazaraqui (Bunch of stuff) as the Grim Reaper, Kim Mai Guest (Mei Lin in MGS) as Sophia, and Kimberly Brooks (Alura in Voltron/Luna in the Hex Girls) as Lenore.
The design team used to say that “G&G” took place in Britain while Maximo took place in Italy. Same world, different locations.
Anyone know what music is playing before the game starts? (The music for the intro of his videos)
Yo Matt, if you want more PS2-era action games with cartoon-y visuals, no camera control, and swords bouncing off nearby obstacles, you should check out The Mark of Kri
To add, this game and it's sequel Rise of the Kasai are both on PS4.
Me my mom and my aunt used to play this game together for a really long time they are both passed away now, I’m the only one who remembers all the good times we had on this game.
This was the first game I ever had for the PS2. A personal favorite
Damn this brings back memories... phenomenal game. Hurts my soul this game never got a remaster or, to my knowledge, even a release.
PS: I knew that intro was going get Matt's cackling 😂
Me with a wry grin: Maximo was the Dark Souls of PS2 platformers
I loved both Maximo games. I would love to see this series make a comeback
Me too!
That chest at the end of "Bad to the Bone" has a hidden wizard. You abuse the ground pound attack too often and a wizard will appear there and try to turn you into an old man. Who can do a pogo stand on his sword and complain about his back.
If the wizard isn't triggered then it is a diamond. Unless you opened the chest already in the level and died, then it will be a mimic. You can only gain stuff one time in a level so that is why you kept fighting mimic.
That man slapped the fuckin *soul* out that broad! As kids, me and my best friend found that absolutely hilarious. Today, i find it just as funny as it was back then!
Really enjoyed this game (and the sequel). The gameplay blend was just right and the atmosphere had tons of personality. I'd love to see another!
Love this game. It's not insanely difficult, but it really takes a while to figure out. As a kid I never understood how to save. It's such an obtuse system, in comparison to other games anyway. I did have the instruction manual but I guess I just didn't really get it at the time. lmao
WTF, Matt! I literally just bought this game to play off of eBay like 30 mins ago and here you upload gameplay. That's a poggers move.
I remember playing Maximo Army Of Zin so much back in the day!!!! 😃😃😃
Ah man, do I miss Maximo. Should try Army of Zin too, they managed to polish up movement and combat a bit more. Only real gripe is that it has a bit less enemy variety since most of them are robots, but it's still a fun ride. Really, this series is one I'd love to see get the remake treatment, iron out the issues and just general quality of life improvements.
love this game , played it when i was younger then rebought it when i got older
Lmfao, so, I’m a pretty well seasoned Maximo player. Can breeze through it on any given Sunday. Seeing Matt play, I forgot this game can be sorta rough if this is a new experience. It brings me back to when my Dad would pass the sticks and I’d get CRUSHED.
I had this game as a kid and I remember it being brutal. Didn't help that I didn't know how to save the game so I ended up getting good enough to beat the game in one life or using the world end bosses as my saves.
Also the kisses are needed for the true ending of the game.
Tmk the second game is much improved from the first from what I've heard of it. Another fun fact but foot cheese lets Maximo walk on the grey ground where the skeletons try to grab at his feet normally without that happening. It can be lost on death tho so yeah.
I haven't played this game before, but as soon as I saw the kiss option, I thought "that's needed for the best ending."
@Ryuho the Wolf is there’s no way for a manual save?
There's only 1 ending, the 4 kisses only unlocks an (SPOILER) art gallery.
Seeing footage of that cancelled third game upsets me. I want it sooooooo bad.
This is one of those games I always wanted to play but never got to. Thanks for the upload.
This was wonderful to watch. I’m new to your channel and it was a blast. Thanks 🤙
This was on the back of EVERY gaming magazine for a lil while
I would have lost my mind playing this. I know I would have lost lives trying to collect every coin, even the ones where the ground fell beneath it.
"...is this a Souls game?"
Well, it's as hard like a Souls game, as you found out.
Wow I recently played this again after plugging up the old slim. It and Contra Shattered Soldier, and Virtua Fighter 4. Unfortunately just those out of my giant library started working. This being because they are all Blue backed ps2 discs. All the others are the gold dvd style discs. Looks like I need a new disc reader. Awesome game that reminds me like the Mario 64 treatment for the Ghouls N Ghosts series. It even has the hub world. The music and gameplay are highlights. Graphics hold up pretty well too.
Yeah the "blue disc" disc read errors were harsh. Always happened to my favorite games (Maximo, Contra, Gradius V, etc.)
The chests are only mimics if you have collected the contents of the chest and then get sent back to a checkpoint before you collected the chest contents
I loved this game and would welcome seeing more gameplay of it.
Still own this game, still fun to this day
Oh man, I remember playing Maximo Army of Zin so so much with my brother, it was such a fun game
Glad to see so many Maximo fans exist. Super grateful I got to experience and beat this hidden gem. Bought the sequel day 1 as fast as I could. Good times.
I like how just playing this game for like 30 minutes immediately gave Matt severe trust issues over chests.
This and Oni were the first games that I bought with my PS2 brand new. Unfortunately they were 'blue back' disc so I never even finished either game. Great game though.
Need more Maximo representation! Great video my man, would love to see you play through the whole game:) I speedrun the game so if you need any pointers they’re all there for you ;)
This was the first game I ever played on ps2.
Well it was my second game apart fro. Gta vice city
Don't Be a Mimic to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood!
Army of Zin was the first game I helped make at Studio 8 back in the day and it was a lot of fun. I don't think I played either Maximo since then 😅 Great video
*Walks over checkpoint*
Matt: Oh so that's how checkpoints work.
Me: oh....oh no....
I just randomly thought of this game I played as a kid with my Grandpa nd type it into UA-cam and this video was uploaded 2 hours ago. Crazy. Lol
I loved this game back in the early ps2 days.
Finally some sweet Maximo lovin
I used to see ads for this game in magazines, but i had completely forgotten about it until now
I miss this game, I loved it so much as a kid.
@3:41 that DSP reference! I see what you did there Matt!
press triangle for vertical slash man! also hold block to orient camera wherever you are facing. no its not perfect but it was good enough back in the day
This. Old school but it got the job done every time 👍😁
When I first played this as a kid, I wanted to get all the Fairy Kisses, but I couldn't get past the swamp area. After downloading it on the PS3, I finally beat it and got 100%.
Man I would have totally been into this game back in the day.
For real though I loved Maximo. Like Mischief Makers it felt like the hidden cool game nobody was talking about on the platform. It stupidly came out weeks after Jak & Daxter two days AFTER CHRISTMAS wtf Capcom. And yeah man, it's a no holds barred action platformer with a robust set of power ups and a rather restrictive save/continue system, it does not fuck around. The ending is straight out of Conker, *spoiler for a 20 year old game* the princess is literally a Xenomorph and attacks you the... end?
Beautiful game! All adventure games should be like this!
I've beaten this game... Twice. So here's the rundown if you HAVEN'T SKIM-READ the manual:
Collecting hearts are extra lives.
Mimics only appear IF you've opened a chest after you die.
..Oh yeah, you lose abilities after you die, except the first few you got as they're locked. Getting more locked slots requires after defeating the boss.
To collect the Death Coins, you need to acquire 50 Navis or Spirits after destroying any object that's glowing (i.e. certain Tombstones, snowmen, etc.). The Downward thrust does it best.
The Triangle button deals more damage.
You actually have camera control... Pressing the R1 button repositions the camera. There's also a 1st person look as well by pressing L1.
About the kisses... They do nothing. The one thing that's good for is collecting them all unlocks the art gallery in the main menu.
If this was rereleased today zoomers would call it "dark souls clone"
Fucking zoomers I fantasise about killing them
@@pieterandjuanchronicles wew lad
@@nono9543 tenchu and that one president game from 2005
@@OperationFatGuy Maybe I went too far but zoomers are so annoying with their fortnight and there tiktok dances
As if kids from before never did cringe shit.
Matt: “What if you touch your... grab your...”
Me: “You son of a bitch, I’m in.”
Great game, but a little ahead of its time. Still in that weird era where soft lock-on wasn't a thing yet and the camera was the worst enemy. I remember reading a Tips and Tricks guide saying the best thing to do is spam the forward sliding attack move since it was so hard to gauge enemy distance.
I remember this game being really hard, I wasn't sure if it was because I was 10 but seeing Matt saying it doesn't fuck about makes me feel better. You can buy this game on the PS3 PS Store but it's hidden.
Always wanted to get this game as a kid when I saw it
oh my god I love maximo so much
i remember trying this game when i was like 5,
the losing armor and fighting skeletons in boxers was pretty funny.
looking back now though pretty cool game.
an enhanced version on pc would be nice.
This game is punishing, this game is way more difficult than anything that would come out today. The fact you have to pay to save is absurd. A mechanic I've not seen since. Imagine in mario if you had to buy a save with coins, and mario was way harder too. The only game I had more frustrating as a kid was jedi power battles. It felt like these games were made to torment the players. And people complain now about crash, and spongebob, those games are easy street.
Jedi Power Battles..... now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time..... a long time.
But damn... Maximo, Jedi Power Battles.... your old school game pedigree is legit lol
you need to pay coins for finishing courses or using check points in mario land 3: Wario land (aka wario land 1) lol
Lol I remember learning how to checkpoint by sitting on the I tro screen for long enough for the gameplay preview
Man, I just finished watching your Demon's Souls vid, and was trying to find what game the song was from when you're talking about Bloodbourne, and I remembered it was Ghouls n Ghosts. So then I looked up Maximo and lo and behold.
Im back where I started
Maximo For Super Smash Bros Ultimate and also deserves a newer comeback then his previous games! Also I'm guessing the Descendant To Sir Arthur of the original Ghosts N' Goblins game?
I remember trying to beat this as a kid and it was so hard i still physically get angry thinking about it 16 years later
I kinda love this game.
I remember having a demo disc with Maximo on it.
extremely disappointed Matt didn't show his reaction to Maximo saying "SOOOO PHIII AAAAA" in the intro cutscene
Maximo is the last son of a dying planet, launched to Earth at the last second. On the way, he was bathed with cosmic waves. Upon landing on Earth, he was adopted by a kindly peasant couple. Later, his adoptive parents were tragically cut down in a undead raid. He swore revenge against the undead, and adopted Arthur’s look to strike fear into the undead, as they are superstitious and cowardly lot. During his quest, he was bitten by a radioactive monster slayer, gaining proportional powers to a monster hunter. Realizing that with great power comes great responsibility, he took up the mantle of Maximo! That about gets you up to speed.
Another thing the game doesn't really tell you, downward thrust grave markers to get more souls. And yeah the downward thrust is meant to kill downed enemies but you can get a shockwave ability that pushes enemies back and makes it a viable attack.
I would love a HD remaster or even a remake this game was awesome
Man I saw this game on my shelf got it ages ago but I remember liking it when I was a smol kid but my disc doesn't work and I just wanted to see this game again
Man I used to rent this game all the the in my local video rental store good times.
I'd love to see you play Tenchu: Fatal Shadows on the PS2. That game is just disgustingly brutal, much harder than Maximo in my opinion ('cause at least Maximo has checkpoints), but it's also really fun. And not many people remember it, Tenchu fans included. Which is a shame, 'cause it actually has a really cool ninja flick style (complete with a goofy recurring catchphrase that the narrator says before every mission: "Evil will perish in a flash of crimson!")
Play mo’ Maximo!!!
I remember beating this game in 1 run because I didn't have a memory card at the time
Super underrated capcom gem, I must now finish lol
When I started this when I was young I didn’t know that you had to sword slam on the check point. I only played to the second level and gave up.
He'll feel so stupid after he knows how to really do a checkpoint 😂😂😂
Hell yeah I was just thinking about this game no to long ago I bought it on the ps store on ps4 pretty difficult sometimes to i wont lie
I remember getting this game at blockbuster....
such a good game
Super good game I just remember drinking tons of coca cola playing it eating pizza staying up all night
The thing that makes maximo a bastard hard game is each indvidual enemy character has a different way to dispach them. Easy enough if youre facing the same enemy. But when youre being ganged up against by multiple type your best bet is to run away and try to bottleneck them. The final boss is supprisingly easy compared to the rest of the game
I remember going to one of the endgame stages again just to get the Armageddon / black magic enchantment for the sword specifically for the satisfaction of murdering Achille by accursed means. At full charges the bastard had no chance.
If you like this game then you’re definitely gonna like the sequel, and you get to temporarily play as death
More weapons and combos, and camera control
This game is so nostalgic 😂😂😂 God i love the games you've chosen haha i really really really want you to play Vampire Rain 😅😅😅😂😂😂
So lucky with the random. I only ever got new underwear
Maximo was pretty fun shame the franchise died
I love this game!!!
I loved the hell outta this game, random mimics, solid controls, great abilities and good old fashioned difficulty before games got easy.
I love this game so much. Idr much about the lore between G&G but God damn the game was great for its time and its still unique rn since slashers and platformers are kinda uncommon and basic present day. Shame we never got the 3rd game we were supposed to. Id sell my left testicle for a remaster of both games and my right for the trilogy to finish. Also I feel like lock on and camera movement being bad is supposed to be arbitrary difficulty.
Wait, that DEATH came from Conkers!!
This is so WEIRD. I just finished this game from my backlog like 3 days ago on a whim.
This game is so solid but gets hard as fuck later if you mess up early game (as a kid).
Maximo vs Army of Zin is a much better sequel. One of Capcom's underrated and forgotten IPs, way back when the company took artistic risks.
