Too funny, because it’s so true...We know their speaking voices, we can tell who it is by how they move, their silhouette, their laugh...
There is so much video of them, from pre-debut vlogs to American Hustle, Bon Voyage, Run BTS (we are at episode 142, I think, before their month break), In the Soop, variety shows, interviews, concerts, live streams, VLive, then of course MV’s, live performances, award shows, fan meetings, Musters, Festa, they interact with Army in a way that I have never seen another artist or group do, we have watched them grow up from JK (the youngest) at 15 to now at 23 (western age), we watched them struggle and grow - they were sweet, kind, talented boys who became sweet, kind men with integrity and values that they hold dear, they inspire us to be better, they have developed their talents to the point where they are some of the best singers, rappers, dancers, song writers and producers in the world - and they are just so DECENT. We love them. And they truly feel gratitude for our support and they love us too. Their Korean language songs are where I find real depth both musically and lyrically (Butter and Dynamite are great dance/pop tracks, but there is more to BTS than that) - don’t rely on captions on screen though (if you watch their other music), they are often a little off on translations - we do like doolsetbangtan.Wordpress.com for English translation - you can search by BTS song title
Great reaction, thank you for taking the time to check them out 💜

@@AndrewBergSax it’s really because there is so much captured on video, they were recruited between 2010 and 2012, and debuted as a group in 2013. There is stuff from the beginning, but each member started a vlog in early 2013 as a lead up to their debut - it’s still out there, you can watch it today (they were babies, but they worked so hard and put themselves under immense pressure). But every single thing they ever did was documented via video, plus they created content by creating their own reality shows - multiple episodes of multiple shows - they are still doing them. Every appearance, performance, concert, interview - all documented via video, all available still. And Army is organised, internationally and within Korea - we work together (except when it comes to concert tickets 😢🤷‍♂️ then it’s every army for themselves).

Kpop is not a genre actually, it's an industry because groups can choose whatever genre they want. I know you can listen to like one or two songs from a singer or group and get the gist of their sound but with BTS, their discography is so varied that you need to listen to a variety of the music to get who they are.

    • @nerasomnia
      @nerasomnia 3 роки тому +69

Yup! It’s really hard to box any kpop group in with one genre. It’s why people tend to say they have a [genre] core. Like BTS has a hip-hop core, EXO has an r&b core, Dreamcatcher has a rock core, GOT7 has a pop core, and Blackpink has an EDM core. They may have a specialty for one genre or a genre they frequently use, but it’s very flexible. Experimentation and genre fusion are commonplace.

Their voices are easy to tell apart bc only 4 are vocalists, each with distinct voices:
Jin, the tall lanky one in white has a "lifted palette" sound and is great at hitting those piercing/belting notes.
Jungkook with the purple-blue hair has the quintessential pop sound (think Bieber) and has the most control over his voice which is why he usually does the runs and ad libs (though Jimin has a lot of awesome ad libs in this particular song).
Jimin, pretty blonde with rainbow highlights, is known for his airy light delicate voice. He has some of the most beautiful range of tones IMO
V, (orange suit, elevator) has the gorgeous, round, soulful voice, and can go low and deep but also high and belting (really, all the singers in BTS have an amazing vocal range and can all go high)
Once you get the singers out of the way, then you have the 3 rappers. These are easy, cuz there's less of them...and they have their own distinct style. This song doesn't really show the rappers' full capability, but you can still get a glimpse of those unique styles:
Suga, first rapper, usually has a slightly, how-do-I explain it....low-key savage/dangerous tone? and a little bit of a lisp. He plays with his voice sometimes using inflection on certain words.
RM, 2nd rapper, wearing black gaucho shorts and suspenders (official leader of BTS), has a very solid American rapper boom-bap style. Deep voice. Can sound smooth or aggressive.
J-Hope (my personal fave), 3rd rapper (with the butter-yellow hair), usually he's the "hype" rapper of the group songs and singles, but he is a talented rapper in his own right. He has the most distinctive voice IMO, very laid-back vibe, but can be savage and sarcastic sounding.

Also, erase everything you knew about boy bands from now on! First of all, they have a leader called RM but don't think of him as the Beyonce or Justin Timberlake of the group lol. Hi, welcome to the BTS rabbit hole! I see a lot of suggestions in the comments for songs that you might like but I kind of wanted to warn you. BTS addresses some very serious topics in some of their songs and videos. They have a fictional story line that runs through a lot of their videos and addresses a number of issues. They have songs that talk about mental health, the loss of someone you care about, and suicide. They have a song that the video, in particular, references a national tragedy where 250 high school students drowned when a ferry sank with them on board. They also talk about the importance of loving yourself. They are the only group that I know that creates songs specifically for their fans, to cheer them up and give them strength. Their music has literally saved lives, preventing suicides, and helped people recover from dark times. They even have a song, Louder Than Bombs, where the guys basically acknowledge how much their music means to ARMY and they promise to keep singing, for our sakes. They have another song, We Are Bulletproof: The Eternal, that basically talks about how much ARMY has helped BTS throughout the years. The video for it is animated and actually shows the history of BTS from debut to 2019. BTS has ARMY and ARMY has BTS. ARMY is just as unique of a fandom as BTS is artists.

Obviously I want to recommend their jazzier songs since that’s your thing, but what other genres do you enjoy most? For their jazzy songs I would recommend House of Cards, 134340, Rain and a solo song by one of the singers called Still with You. As far as I know these are the jazzier songs. I'm pretty sure someone already commented on this, but Armys are quite sensitive about labeling BTS as K-pop. Also we're not really comfortable with the term "boyband". "The genre is BTS". They are Korean musicians, that's it. Unfortunately, media pushes this narrative and tries to maintain them into these limits - as a result, the general public knows them as "K-pop".
Also, Butter (and Dynamite) is not a representative example of their music, just something they did to bring up the mood and reach more of an English-speaking audience.

@@julianasilva6946 I agree. Suga even said in an interview last week that they released Butter because it had been a while since they'd done a "boyband" sounding song, so I don't think they care about that label. ARMY are protective because so many people weaponize that label as a way of dismissing any artists that fall under that umbrella. I don't think that's what this reactor was doing though, just using it as a factual label. This song really does sound like MJ + western boyband music.

I think it helps that they _do_ all have very distinct singing voices, but also, and this is especially true for new listeners, it helps that they're a group comprised of 3 rappers and 4 vocalists and both groups tend to stick with mostly either singing or rapping.
So, when you hear them singing, you only have to figure it out between 4 guys and hearing them rap means you probably only have 3 options (they do switch up but it's not that often and the main singing/rapping parts will still belong to the main singers/rappers in the group, which help in learning each member's sound).

    Some background on BTS:
Well, first of all, the members write and produce their own music. They have a lot of creative freedom when it comes to their songs and the message of them, their performances, their mv's, ... the vocalists have amazing voices and vocal technique, the rappers are some of the best out there today. They are also amazing dancers, one has a background in street dance, another in contemporary dance. Their performances on korean award shows are mind blowing, the west just cant compete. You can check out BTS MMA 2019 performance
Second, BTS's music is about topics such as mental health, self love, social and economical issues, hope and not giving up, the challenges of adulthood and adolescense, their own journey as artists and people. So their music is very genuine and resonates with a lot of people.
Third, their is an ongoing fictional universe that runs throughout several mv's, a webtoon, a book series, higlight reels, a game ... . It's about the story of 7 young men dealing with different mental health issues in a way and how they over come it. But it's fictional, so there's time traveling and so on. The story is still going and we only get snippets of it, not in order, so ARMY is still trying to piece everything together. There are also running themes through albums, for example the love yourself albums, and some songs are connected, like boy in luv and boy with luv. Some songs of them may seem to have a superficial message, but when you are not an ARMY, you won't pick up on certain things that make these songs meaningful.
Fourth, BTS came from a very small korean company that was close to bankruptcy, so they weren't very popular when they first debuted. After that, they became victims of hate, discrimination, prejudice, false accusations, ... . So BTS and ARMY always had, and still have to fight, defend and prove themselves. This is why BTS and ARMY have such a close bond, because we've been through so much, but we got through it together, with our heads held high every time.
Then there is also the fact that they are just the most respectful kind, genuine, honest, hardworking and caring people, donating to many charities, practicing 18 hours a day so the performance is perfect for their fans. They launched the love myself campaign with unicef to protect children and gave 2 speeches for the UN. The love and dedication and passion they have for their craft and art is amazing. The members themselves are really close too, they are like family to each other and all still live together in the same appartment. One member once stated: the members are like a wallet or phone, when you don't have them with you, you feel anxious and nervous. Another said: thank god, I have the members by my side. They support and help each other and keep each other grounded. It's litteraly so heartwarming to see.

No. Absolutely not. That's too many mfs to try to focus on" and I gave up. To me, 5 was a lot but doable, 6 was overdoing it and 7 seemed downright ridiculous. I later decided to give one of their songs a shot because it featured Halsey and I loved Halsey. It blew my mind. My goodness they were so good that the song was almost over and I was surprised to see Halsey pop up because I completely forgot she was supposed to be in the song. After that I couldn't get enough of their music and binged their albums all in about 2 weeks. Now I can't imagine a world where BTS is missing even one of their members because I adore them all! I’ll give you a quick summary of why BTS is huge . Their huge because they aren’t your normal kpop group . Not even your normal boyband . Bts fans sometimes don’t like to put bts with kpop or boyband categories even tho they are the biggest boyband / kpop group in the world right now . Mainly because of how different they are to other groups, western artists and the term “ boyband “ comes with insults and stereotypes such as people thinking they don’t write their own music, only for teens etc.
So BTS is is acronym for the korean name “BANGTAN Sonyeondon”. Which translates to “BULLETPROOF BOY SCOUTS “ That name has a meaning . Basically bts is a group that wants to use their music and platform to spread positivity and connect with people of all race and gender while teaching people music has the power to transcend and translate messages regardless of your race , age or gender . They also go by “beyond the scene” or Bangtan boys . This is something kpop fans and Armys always want to teach people especially since kpop groups tend to get a lot of racist hate comments sometimes because of their looks , called girls and other homophobic insults .
Over the years BTS has tackle topics in their music such as mental health and suicide ( taboo topics in Asian culture ) anxiety, loneliness, politics , women’s empowerment , Domestic Abuse , government , pursing your dreams and not living somebody else dream , differences between old and younger generation , motivation to youth , socio-economics , self love , self care and struggles and motivating people , Etc . they want their music to connect anyone regardless of your age : kids , teens , adults , elders etc
Also bts fanbase actually a lot more diverse in age and gender then you think . Majority of the fans are over 21 despite how many screaming girls you see on Social media. I’m 24 , kpop fan since high school. My co workers in their 20s, 30s and 40s are fans . Both male and female . Even John cena is a fan lol. Me personally I love them also because they contribute a lot to Asian representation since there a lack of Asians in American media , entertainment etc
BTS is also known for contributing to charities and causes. They donated 1 Million Dollars to Black Lives Matter and the Armys ( bts fandom name) donated 1 million dollars as well in just 24Hrs. Total of 2million was donated. The Armys also take part in creating their own projects naming it after the members such as planting trees , donating money to children hospital , canned food drives and many more .
Overall BTS is huge because they work hard to show people Music has the power to transcend and translate messages regardless of race , gender, religion, language or age.
If you get a chance , I highly recommend checking out these articles that explain more about their music . You’ll understand better .

It’s just pop :) They grew up with the same music and musical influences like any American has, especially hip-hop, R&B, pop/rock, etc. The song is not what you expect, but if you listen to their amazing catalog, they will also be not what one would expect as they are progressive and experiment fusing genres/styles they enjoy/appreciate. Since they started out hip-hop, they will always be hip-hop based in one way or another with some R&B, edm, etc. So Butter as well their song Dynamite are different from their other music, but it still has their flavor in the way they performed (both has MJ influences in them, especially Dynamite which was a huge hit last year). In other words, they are just pop or more closely to just BTS Pop as they make music how they want it.

But there are many of their songs that do that. Black Swan is a current masterpiece from 2020, just lyrically and deep message, but also a really good listen. I love it. ON was a single from 2020 and that hits hard, the choreography is on another level.

Since you are a jazz musician, maybe you should check out their House of Cards (live), Still with You (solo), Singularity & Stigma (solo, neo-soul). They work as a group, sububits & solos. They do sing, dance, rap, write, produce (even direct) a lot of their own music. They have about 300 songs in verious genres of music. They are certainly not a simple boy band. Once you find out what they truly are, you will be surprised.
