The Police RENEWED - A Sermon on Nothing Achieving (FYYC's Extended Mashup Remix & Special Video)

- A tribute to the energy and magic of the early police! This is a remix and mash-up of 'A Sermon' and 'Nothing Achieving'. 'A Sermon', previously called 'No Excuse', was written by Stewart Copeland in March 1978. It was originally recorded for Outlandos d'Amour in April, but was left off the record and released later in 1980. I really like (as Stewart called them) 'the clever bits' of Andy's guitar, so I multiplied them a few times. Stewart: “Andy let me play most of the guitar, including the intro riff. He did the clever bit in the middle.”
The energy level is quite similar to 'Nothing Achieving', recorded in February 1977 and released in May 1977 on the B-side of their first single Fall Out. The lyrics, which flow together quite smoothly, appear to have been written by Ian Copeland, but Stewart and Sting changed them. Henri Padovani still played guitar at that time, but due to nervousness in the studio, Padovani only played the guitar solo, while Copeland played the remaining guitar parts. Sting: "Fall Out and Nothing Achieving were one of the first songs Stewart played for me. What they lacked in sophistication, they made up for in energy [...] Our first record was entirely a tribute to Stewart's energy and focus. The band would ' Without him it wouldn't have happened."
With the video I tried to match the dynamics and energy of the songs, as well as the feeling of the late seventies. I tried to capture that 'new energy' myself at the time, and The Police was certainly one of the new bands that provided that. I remember buying the single Fall Out / Nothing Achieving on a walk while visiting London. The images come from various sources. Quite a puzzle to rework it and tailor a suit for the mashup remix. I hope you find it a nice fit too. As always, very curious what you think when listening and watching, so please let me know in the comments!
And last but not least, ultimately this is all for a greater purpose. If our protagonist(s) ever listen to this: come on guys, especially Sting, the years are seriously starting to count, so surprise the world, break the myth of The Police as a closed legend, visit your old friends, conquer the demons of the past, and do what many people worldwide don't expect, but are really waiting for: rearrange a few of each other's solo songs, give each other some space and it's done: THAT DAMN SIXTH POLICE ALBUM!

Another masterpiece. I stand by my opinion. You're not telling me the truth, because it's not just technical skills. Making a remix on The Police, maintaining the purity of the sound and the characteristics of their sound, is not easy. not even the best DJ...

Thanks FYYC for another great derangement ! Early footage indeed & captures the more stark feeling of the mid to late '70's. It reminded me of Stu's 'Does Everyone Stare' DVD commentary, in which it is commented that Sting's green jump suit, having been worn for so many gigs, probably knew how to play the set list on it's own !
