I think it would be beneficial to delay adding nutrients by a week. Start in clean water, then add nutrients after 7-10 days. That would decrease the competition with algae.
I have a plant that has been sitting in water for over a year. I change the water out every other week. I added orchid fertilizer and in one week I have three new spots growing!!
With having fish as well, I have seen pothos grow like crazy with its roots only in the fish tank. Fish water is basically a dilute fertilizer, so maybe it makes sense. Either way, I love these side by side experiments!
I would definitely let the roots occur naturally in plain water, than by the 5-7th day add the fertilizer giving the roots a chance of growing naturally the fertilizer will add a boost, + delaying the process more will hopefully stunt the growth of the algae.

I found if you aerate the water a little each day that pothos roots will thrive in plain water. They grow more of those sub roots and start new leaf growth. It's something to try. Love the channel.
I would love to see a bigger test using separate elements, 1 with calcium, 1 with nitrogen, 1 with potassium, 1 phosphorus (phosphorus is the 1 i think would make more roots)
Not sure if that's possible, fertilizers are compounds so they don't change up the pH too much or become reactive to the environment. You put pure potassium on water and it'll light on fire.
@@bobrobertsNotUrBob you’re probably using potassium nitrate, which is a common fertilizer. They are talking about potassium metal, which is pure potassium. Potassium (K) will displace one of the H’s in water. Water is made of 2 H’s and an O. Water is set up like H-OH. Adding K, like KH-OH will kick out the first H. So it’s now H2 (an H from H-oh and an H from K) and KOH separately. This reaction forms hydrogen gas (the H2) and it creates a lot of energy, and it causes an explosion.
Personally, the clones I have went directly into dirt, and it was premium potting mix with fertilizer added.and I have had complete success so far, with all clones surviving and producing roots.and thinking on it,only thing that I can say is the main reason this worked is those roots had like this video, nutrients to help produce roots, moisture and also the air I mentioned from the airated soil.i really think the right combination of those three things is key to cloneing plants, even if it's useing water as a medium.
I converted/repurposed my basement bathroom to a plant nursery. The temp is set at 75 F and lighting is four100 watt equivalent LEDs over the mirror. A dilute amount of Ortho fertiliser. My results are good. Following this video I will very likely do even better.
The Swedish Plantguys channel suggested 2 nodes for each piece - the bottom for root, and the top for the leaf. Have you ever tried this method side by side with your method? I'm wondering if they extra node is really helpful or not.
Wow that was definitely extreme! I'm gonna have to get a hold of some of that. I wonder how it would be with added nutrients as it did seem to effect the original leaves a lot negatively, although it could be because it purposefully shut off the flow of nutrients to the original leaves to concentrate the growth to the roots and new growth. Definitely worth adding to my existing potted plants too.
I did rubber tree cutting in Miracle Grow petite watered with aspirin water just plastic wrap on pot not plant. I had 1.5 to 2 inch roots in about 7 days. But now I'm not sure what did the job because I forgot that my perlite is enriched with plant food. It was great results so I got roots. That is the fastest I ever seen! Thanks for doing what you do and sharing. Have a great weekend!
I do this every year with cuttings from my pothos plants and wanted to ask if it makes a difference in how many plant cuttings you place in a bottle? I have several in each jar and wonder if it would be best to limit them to 3-4 per container. Secondly, what about using a heat mat, beneath the jars, are they beneficial?
Trying this right away! I'm propagating a bunch of pothos from my workplace, they don't have leaves (its from a long vine with oly a few leaves at the end) so everythung that can help them is so appreciated!

I find it even more challenging than carnivorous plants because it grows slowly enough that its easy to overfertilize, but without some fertilizer it eventually turns pale, spindly and wanes away.
I find adding food to the water is great to start them, but after a while it just goes gross and the abundance of nutrients becomes too much. Tried with adansoni too and even small amounts turned the leaves yellow. But definitely great for starting pothos! 👌
Great experiment! I think I will try this out but use an opaque container that doesn't allow light to go through. That would help with the algae growth since it needs light to survive! 🤓
Awesome experiment! I'm definitely going to try it. My best guess for the yellowing leaves is that they have a little too much light. Pothos like a more medium light. Other than that great job! I commend you!! Looking forward to more videos :)
That makes sense. All plants release hormones, most of which can interact with other species. Since pothos are notoriously fast rooters, they would be able to release that hormone into the water faster than other plant cuttings. Random thing: I remember a study done on some plant that releases a stress hormone to other plants nearby when it got munched on by beetles. They played the noise of the crunching to the plants are they still released to hormone! Plants are awesome.

How did they grow after planting? I've tried fertilizing water before but found once they got put in soil the growth stalled for a long while. Ever since the vine has been growing fairly slow, much slower than the mother plant it came from and others I've grown in the past
Algae growth is an indicator if there's too much nutrients in the water. Probably a minuscule amount of nutrient would do the job. I wonder if just adding one macro nutrient would do the job. Like just calcium nitrate. Or potassium sulphate. Probably phosphoric acid would be ideal because phosphorus is the key ingredient for root growth
This was a really good video, however, pothos already possess a self-rooting hormone which is a reason why many people add a cutting of a pothos to propagations (speeds up the process). Could you try your method with other plants? 🤗
I've tried adding weak amounts of fertiliser to water for cuttings and have had no luck. My guess is the added salts from the fertiliser kill the cutting. I have tried mineral rocks as well and they also weren't beneficial.
Nice video as always. Great video quality and great sound and great story telling :) However imo more interesting would be if you added a test scenario where you use a common fertilizer. I live in Germany. Maxsea is sadly nit available here :(
I will try something like that, it should still work with always error on the safe side and dilute it a lot and keep increasing it on each attempt until it seems to have a negative reaction
I've been trying to combat root rot with my monstera, so I've got them sitting divided in 2 opaque buckets and change the water every couple of days. At times I add a bit of peroxide and others, cinnamon powder. I was thinking of trying your Maxsea but not sure which concentration to choose. Any advice? I LOVE your shirt, BTW!
I was just googling to find what (if any) fertilizer to put in the water. Do you have any idea what chemical are you using? I have nitrogen fertilizers as well as sources of magnesium and potassium and also end-consumer mix for houseplants. I am not sure what chemicals do the plants need to start the roots.
Hello. This video is amazing. I have purchased (not picked up yet) four Monstera Obliqua nodes. Very expensive here in Australia. I do believe I may (not sure) only be getting the node without leaf. I plan on rooting in moss. Do you think adding a few drops of fertilizer would help in this situation as well. Thanks for you videos. Love the instant update
I would love to see something like this with other plants as well, not sure if they would all be taking it as well as pothos. I'm currently trying to root a rather old part of my M. Adansonii, as it was such a nice long vine, but the bottom was quite naked. But I'm still waiting for some roots, maybe they were just too old and try. Not sure whether I shouldtry some diluted fertilizer.
I will be trying this, amazing results! I'm not sure if you can help, but this is the first place I've seen similar growth to my own plant. - I am propagating a monstera albo from a leaf, but it doesn't seem to have any roots forming(its been in the water for 1 month), but it looks like it is growing a 'spike' I think you called them similar to the pothos in this video. Is that normal? I just don't want it to die, but not sure if theres anything else I can do XD
Ive heard Albos are hard, I have never had one before so im no expert. BUT ive seen a lot of people keep them in a bag or humidity dome with perlite and wet sphagnum moss pure water freaks me out because i feel like its always teetering on not enough oxyegen for the plant and then it starts dying and rotting.
Excellent, however you have to do the test more than one time to be sure. I have had good growth with just water and pathos actually growing in the water. The question with pothos is it really worth it because they are fairly easy to propagate. Clearly it seems to help.
i just took a tote put 6 holes in it with with a drill bit . then added potting soil then added the cutting to it . then when with that sprinkle just a couple handfulls of soil in then waterd well . and place lid on then put a couple brick on it . cause some time we get strong wind off Lake Erie . i think this may work
I believe this could be from nutrient toxicity which could have caused the plants to stress out, sending out excess growth hormones and other biological signals that could affect their structure and coloration.
interesting. when i did a no light experiment my plants put out a ton of new growths so i can see this being the case. I wonder if it has long term effects to cause some temporary stress to get a boost in growth
Do you need to replace the water or is just topping them off good enough? I have some that have gotten pretty large and pouring all of the water out is somewhat troublesome. The water doesn't seem to look dirty despite it being a few months.
Is Maxsea a similar product to SuperThrive? I spoke with you in one of your recent videos about my inability to propagate Pothos in water, and Im wondering if you think it's worth giving the Superthrive a shot? 🤔
I think superthrive is more of a vitamin supplement thing and less of a fertilizer but i have never used it so im not sure, I "Believe" that you would use superthrive with another fertilizer. You can try it tho and see what happens?
Should have measured the lengths of the new vine growth and root growth of each and made a chart to see the difference it looks like there is a difference but it didn’t seem that much I might do this experiment and chart the data

How did they grow after planting? I've tried fertilizing water before but found once they got put in soil the growth stalled for a long while. Ever since the vine has been growing fairly slow, much slower than the mother plant it came from and others I've grown in the past
I think they were pretty similar, im not sure tho because i believe i potted them together....
If y’all have a fish tank or pond use that water, it’s basically free and natural fertilizer 😌
it works really well!
Really appreciate the time you put into making these! Each video is both interesting and useful. Keep putting them out mate :D
Glad you like them! Im trying! i keep running out of space! Thanks for watching
That’s cool, I’m actually propagating some neon, silver Anne and scindapsus exotica right now.
nice, good luck!
What about taking cuttings a day after feeding the mother plant so the cuttings are plump and full of nutrients?
Still the best channel for me!
Thank you soo much!
Currently growing some Pothos propagation in water + Miracle-Gro. Wish me luck
Good luck and report back with your findings!
Update?
I heard it’s better to use seaweed based fertiliser as it works sort of like a mild rooting hormone solution.
This was a really good video, however, pothos already possess a self-rooting hormone which is a reason why many people add a cutting of a pothos to propagations (speeds up the process).
Could you try your method with other plants? 🤗
I have a lot of experiments in motion right now so stay tuned!
Thank you for making these videos, they're really informative
Thank you for watching!
Amazing results👍
Thank you!
I've tried adding weak amounts of fertiliser to water for cuttings and have had no luck. My guess is the added salts from the fertiliser kill the cutting. I have tried mineral rocks as well and they also weren't beneficial.
try some kelp based stuff!
These videos are so relaxing to watch
Just ordered some… great info and showing my man.
Hope you enjoy it!
Please do this exact experiment with a Monstera!! xx
i almost have enough where i can start experimenting with them. Usually it takes me like a year to build up stock if that makes sense.
Iwonder if it would work on a more sensitive plant that might be worse away fighting infections
i need to try with some other varieties
Great video, I will definitely try it out!
Please do!
Not sure whether I shouldtry some diluted fertilizer.
im on a new initiative to widen my experiments with other species so stay tuned!
Very amazing the one with the maxsea fertilizer I like new subscribers watching from California
I put a sprinkle or orchid fertilizer into my pothos. In one week I have three new stems coming!!
nice
Your channel has such high quality and concise content, thank you!
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching, it wouldnt be making videos if kind people like you werent interacting! Thanks!
Excellent, however you have to do the test more than one time to be sure. I have had good growth with just water and pathos actually growing in the water. The question with pothos is it really worth it because they are fairly easy to propagate. Clearly it seems to help.
yeah i will try and expand into other plants with these experiments
i just took a tote put 6 holes in it with with a drill bit . then added potting soil then added the cutting to it . then when with that sprinkle just a couple handfulls of soil in then waterd well . and place lid on then put a couple brick on it . cause some time we get strong wind off Lake Erie . i think this may work
I believe this could be from nutrient toxicity which could have caused the plants to stress out, sending out excess growth hormones and other biological signals that could affect their structure and coloration.
interesting. when i did a no light experiment my plants put out a ton of new growths so i can see this being the case. I wonder if it has long term effects to cause some temporary stress to get a boost in growth
I have home made seaweed liquid fertilizer, you think I can use that?
Good experiments. You've answered all of my questions.
Awesome thanks for watching!
Do you need to replace the water or is just topping them off good enough? I have some that have gotten pretty large and pouring all of the water out is somewhat troublesome. The water doesn't seem to look dirty despite it being a few months.
How often to Change the water
never, only topped it off
Before propagating the cuttings, do we have to let the wounds heal before placing it in water? I’ve tried 3 times and the bottom always seem to rot.
How much light do you give pothos when propagating?
a pretty good amount they are under 48watt bar lights and they get like 15 hours a day
been curious about this one too. Again, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Now I wonder what brand of fertilizer works best.
time for an experiment lol
Can you make a soil method?
yeah thats a good idea!
What are your thoughts/experiences with using cinnamon/molasses as a plant food?
never tried it but i hear cinnamon is good for antifungal treatments!
I sometimes water my plants with molasses, I'm shocked there aren't more videos with people experimenting with it
I haven't heard anything about molasses. What is your basis?
Is Maxsea a similar product to SuperThrive? I spoke with you in one of your recent videos about my inability to propagate Pothos in water, and Im wondering if you think it's worth giving the Superthrive a shot? 🤔
I think superthrive is more of a vitamin supplement thing and less of a fertilizer but i have never used it so im not sure, I "Believe" that you would use superthrive with another fertilizer. You can try it tho and see what happens?
@@TechplantChannel Ill do that, thank you!
Which one is better, fertilizer or root hormones?
fertilizer
How much would you dilute a 20-20-20 soluble fert?
try 1:4 parts water I wanna say mine was like 16-16-16 and i did about 1:2 and i think mine was a little strong and it just got eaten up by algae
You must have so many pothos in your house by now lolll Also, great video as always:)
there are a lot lol
Should have measured the lengths of the new vine growth and root growth of each and made a chart to see the difference it looks like there is a difference but it didn’t seem that much I might do this experiment and chart the data
yeah I should be more exact and with data at the end. I will try and do this going forward, thank you for the suggestion!
