- Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #788
Date of adventure: 4/1/24
THERE'S A SUCKER BORN EVERY MINUTE!! Though I've driven down Interstate 40 many times, I've never bothered to check out the Meteor Crater -- until now. Is it worth $29 to look at a hole in the ground?? Well, it kinda is... if you know the backstory of the family who owns it!

People pay a lot more to see smaller holes. 🤔
Too funny.
Hahaha
Not very bright people. 🤷
I've seen Sarah's
😂 I like the way you think
Super funny and way awesome! thanks for the laugh
Had a drink every time you said 29.00 dollars. I'm drunk.
🥳🍻👍
Yeah i would be done lol
Wait a minute. How much was it??
You'll never keep up with her.
I’m ready to donate the $29 . . .almost, but grateful for the video. Always wanted to visit the site myself.
When someone asks what you done today, you can proudly say "I attended Ms. Wonderhussy's meteorite class!"
What's really amazing is how close the visitor center is and was almost destroyed by the Meteor 🙃
That's just great.
😆😅🤣😂
Just like racing. “Aim for the visitor center. It’s moving eastward at 2700 miles per hour. It will move by the time you get there.” It’s no wonder the aliens avoid us.
Amazing I didn't even notice it when it hit, either. 🥵
"High Plains Thrifter" my new favourite film LOL 😀
Don't worry Hussy you will make your money back 100 fold from your video. Plus you can deduct that 29 bones off you taxes. Thanks for taking one for the team. We love you
You aren't looking at a hole in the ground, you are looking at the earths past and future.
Good work, thanks.
You saved this frugal guy $29. Thank you.
Lolol. My thoughts exactly
4 of us on vacation circa '03, we drove hours to get there and left after we found out it was $29. At least its still $29.
Golly! Those people are awful lucky. Looks like it just missed their building.
There's a nearby casino to entertain your "frugal" interests. Enjoy.
It's well worth the price. You spend way more than that just driving. It has a nice museum and tour included in it. You don't see a meteor crater every day.
I got to see it as a kid several times in the early-mid 90s. I swear it was only like 3-4$ for kids and 7-10$ for adults back then. I was absolutely floored to hear its now 29$.
But the $29 is a lifetime fee.....so The Hussy could visit the hole in the ground again and again...except, she didn't read the fine print and threw the ticket away.
$10 in mid 90’s is about $29 now. Thank the Fed and your splendid government.
@@pigdroppings this is a woman who regularly spends $600 to $700 each year, on just tickets (not including fuel to get there) to attend a pretentious yuppie-thon called “burning man”. That last year turned into a mudfest. And she’s ranting about the comparatively modest cost to see one of the geologic wonders of the world? I guess I’ve been spending too much time watching the wrong channel.
@@russbell6418 has nothing to do with the “fed-er-ral” government as she likes to pronounce it. This is good old capitalism! This is privately held land.
I’ve been to the Barringer crater, at least six times in the last 50 years. Never paid any attention to how much it cost to get in to see it. It’s the best preserved impact crater in the world, and easily accessible from an interstate highway. In 1971, my first time there, my younger brother, and I hiked all the way to the bottom (they let you do that back then). Didn’t see any “wreckage” of an airplane. The stuff you’re seeing at the bottom, was base of the drilling platform Barringer drilled with 100 years ago.
The crater was not proven to be of impact origin until the early 1960s, by geologist Eugene Schumaker. Before that, through the 1950s, the competing thought amongst geologist was it was of volcanic origin. There are many volcanic features in the surrounding area, including San Francisco Peak near Flagstaff, that’s actually a big volcano. The crater you mention in Nevada, is NOT impact origin.
I wouldn’t be too concerned with the price to get in. If you have any interest in science, you’re getting to see one of the wonders of the world. It’s well maintained, and keeps the riff raff out. I’ve paid a lot more, to see a lot less in my lifetime.
People spend their time and fuel, and are scared off by entrance fees. Tou rist, or not tou rist. That is the question.
She’s bitter about something that’s for sure.
I don't buy that a meteor made this. Nothing makes any sense about the whole narrative
I'm glad you stopped. I went past but never stopped so many times. Love Arizona. Thanks so much.
Hopefully, this blog will earn you considerably more than $29.00. Good one Sarah.😊
Oh it will, I think she’s running out of ideas around Death Valley. We will see a lot more traveling to keep the channel alive.
@@slalomking That’s fine. Lots of stuff to see in the desert southwest. I can’t get there myself these days, so Go, Wonderhussy!
I've been there a few times and the weather is always an issue. Once it was so windy that people were getting blown over, hats went flying, kids were crying - it was something to experience! The science museum is really interesting, but, you know, just down the way is Winslow where you can stand on the corner, see a flat-bed Ford slowing down to take a look at me ... for free!
If it weren't private, there w9uld be dirt bikers and off roaders driving all over it. There would be thousands of beer cans littering it.
SO why wasn't it taken over by the National Park Service...seems like it should be.
That's the only kinda place Drunkenslutty likes. Where there are empty beer cans, there are full beer cans.
@scottscouter1065 why should the government own it? Many people have their lands confiscated by eminent domain, do you think that is a good thing? Maybe Disneyland should be owned by the government as well.
@@scottscouter1065 if the park service took it over you’d still be paying about 30 bucks to get in. Joshua tree national park near where I live costs that much unless you have a senior pass like I do..
@@jonathanhansen3709 Perhaps, but Federal ownership and the legal protections that affords are usually more than State laws provide for private owners. So there's that...
11:29, yes but if it was converted into a National Park, they would charge $35.00 per entry!
That’s why you get the annual pass 😆
Didn’t realize you were so frugal! But you’re actually in the same tight ass category as my wife! Thanks to her I got to retire early! 😂😂😂
Thanks to my wife, and worthless eldest son, I'm still working and will be until I'm dead on the ground. Thanks a lot "Holy Matrimony". Wife and kids = the gifts that keep on giving and keeping a man broke as hell.
Yet Wonderhussy thinks nothing, of shelling out $600 to $700 every year (not including the fuel to get to get there) to attend a pretentious, yuppyfest, “Burning Man” , but grIpes nonstop here, about shelling out $29 bucks , to see one of the geologic wonders of the world. That’s not frugality that’s just a difference of priorities.
It's amazing how close that asteroid came to hitting that visitor center.
It was $19 about 20 years ago when I was there. Viva la Capitalism! The impact was so large that large boulders and rocks flew out and into the air, landing nearby making many smaller satellite craters that still exist around the main crater today. There were the remnants of a mining operation in the lowest part of the valley at that time...As I recall, there were some diamonds found in the impact area created from the pressure and the heat of the impact. The diamonds ran out and the tourists began to come...The rest is history! Thanks WH! 😎
Thank You for taking us along !!! We love you !!!
The cloudy skies made it look all the more amazing. It’s beautiful! Glad you stopped and “creaked open your wallet”!! Love that! 😂😂😂😂 Thanks for sharing!
This crater was in the movie Star Man !
You beat me to this
Gonna have to give that a watch sometime it's got Jeff bridges in it!!
Awesome movie!
@@joycemeadows9837 The scene from that movie that stayed with me was in the casino when Starman made the slot machine pay. I daydream about that!
@@ROGER2095 wouldn't that be the best thing ever. The look on her face. I will never forget. They just don't make movies like that anymore.
You think $29 is steep, James Turrell charged $6,500 to visit his Roden Crater art installation near Flagstaff!
I stopped there on the way home from visiting friends in southern California in the summer of either 1988 or 1989. The visitor center was closed, as it was early in the morning, so I walked around the entire rim of the crater.
Did anyone count how often Wonderhussy said "29 Dollars"? Haha.
29 times? 😉
Way too many! Ruined the video!
@@bigrrman
She should open a whine bar there and maybe she would enjoy capitalism !
@@bigrrman
Yeah, unusually bitter in this episode. Maybe someone messed with her there, cause she missed a lot of the story too
The astronaut figure in the bottom is to give you perspective on how big the crater is.
That's not a plane crash site, it's the remains of one of his mining attempts. As is the mine opening opposite the welcome center.
All that information is available on the signage you walked by
yes, sometimes reading can help ...
The plane wreck was near the rim. Still some Cessna 150 bits if you know where to look.
@russbell6418 definitely not at the bottom
@@SteampunkSteve
She definitely missed a lot of the story
On August 8, 1964, two commercial pilots in a Cessna 150 flew low over the crater. After crossing the rim, they could not maintain level flight. The pilot attempted to circle in the crater to climb over the rim. During the attempted climb out, the aircraft stalled, crashed, and caught fire.
I just read about that! Didn't know it when I visited. Unfortunately I didnt go down to the bottom because the nutter I was with was a sob. Somebody said it great to see.
In August 1984 I flew a Piper Cherokee below the rim and got out with no problems.
I don't know how I missed that at the time. My family and I had visited the crater only 6 weeks before the crash!
@@matthewota3647what was the density altitude?
Back in (1963) when I visited this crater with my family, there were dirt trails to walk on that went to the bottom. Being the middle of Summer with hot temps, I chose to opt out. I was 8 years old anyway. But I still have black and white photos of the visit. Weirdly though, back then there was a gigantic sign in the center on the bottom with a circular target printed on it. Target practice for the Kennedy shooters? Who knows? P.S. As a kid, the most fascinating thing in the museum for me, was the gem stones behind glass illuminated by a black light! I hope it's still there.
I stopped there in the 70's and don't remember paying anything. It was a cool place to see.
That's probably because it was the 70's...and you forgot.
It was free, and had a giant yellow tee-pee gift shop closer to the highway with a painted wall you could stick your face thru for a tourist 'photo'.
It was free and I went several times. The tourist trap was right by the highway.
I was also there in the early 70’s and I don’t remember paying anything either. I do remember the wind blowing straight up out of the crater hole. Straight up ⬆️
Yeah, me either, but I was about 8 so really have no clue. I always thought it was a State park also, but I guess not.
Money well spent Sarah, love your take on the subject and your story telling. If I ever get out that way I'll definitely spend the money and see it. Old Kenny ❤
The Park Service would be charging $30 as well. Would it be better? I'm doubtful...
husband speaking age 81 If I wasn't so lazy I would check my old post card collection to find out when I saw this hole. I was on my way
home from the Air Force 1967.
Kinda cool how the meteor JUST missed the visitor center . I'm a Vet, so I only have to pay $20 to get in! It could be worse, though; the costs to get into the Grand Canyon are the same and HIGHER! National Park (North and South rims) entrance fees - $30 per vehicle. West Rim entrance package - $46.65 per person. Helicopter tours - South Rim - $199 per person.
1st time I went to the Grand Canyon in the '60s, It was a parking lot, a museum and some kiosks.
Now its like Disneyland......
A huge waste of $$$
A tourist trap.
A. the Grand Canyon is bigger - by far. B. your entry fee is good for 7 days and C. the car gets in with the whole family/friends. By the way, you can drive out, pick up more family/friends and drive back in.
Now that's funny
I have the handicap access pass for the national park service 5star highly recommend. I think it’s a $10 processing fee then free admission to all national parks from now onDid the north rim of the canyon last year, completely different vibe from south rim I think one tenth of the visitors and essentially the same distance from Vegas.
Thank you for your service
Kinda glad we saved our money and skipped that place. With 2 adults and 3 kids, it was gonna be over 150$!!!
I had been as a youngster, but my wife wanted to go. We got out there, and she saw the price and told no, lets leave lol
@@scottyo64drove for hours to leave without paying. Glad we aren't the only ones. 😂
And the kids won't appreciate it - or even remember it a week later.
As a Dane we found out that "we" have a much larger Crater below the Ice on Greenland (Danish Territory! Even if that horrible person tried to buy it!). Also in neighboring Sweden they have found remnants of Craters from ancient times! Finn. Denmark
That panoramic shot was gorgeous. Thank you!
We enjoyed our visit to meteor crater. Very interesting.
Hi WH, if you want to see 100 miles of billboards advertising a business, you should go to So. Dakota and drive I-80 and you will WANT to stop at Wall Drug in Wall, SD. Then continue on I-80 and go to Mitchell, SD and visit the Corn Palace (this is where we bought you sun glasses)
Yep...I stopped at both Wall drug and the Corn Palace.
@@pigdroppings its off I-90
@@spuddud807 your right….Wall, SD is off I-90 and Mitchell SD where the corn palace is on I-80
Also Pioneer Village in Minden, NB.
South of the Border in the Carolinas. Pedro (?)
Well, darn. I drove through there last year and didn't stop at this site. I went instead to the OTHER sight-to-see in Winslow, Arizona. Which I HIGHLY recommend. The most famous street corner of rock music. And it has a FABULOUS gift shop nearby ...
It was about $19 when I stopped there in 2012. It's something everyone should see at least once; ditto for the nearby Petrified Forest NP.
Dangche! I love it when you teach me new words Wonderhussy! Teach me more!
You never cease to entertain
29.00 is to much any way you slice it, imagine how many more people would stop if it was 19.00 dollars! They would make more money! No way I’m stopping for 29.00 dollars when there’s a lot of Videos on it and I would rather spend the money at the Grand Canyon
Agree.
💯
Rip off
It's a miracle the meteor missed the visitor center! It landed so close and didn't even damage the building! 😮
Cost of insurance . Taxes & labor to maintain the place
There is a place in Oregon called Hole-in-the-ground. There is no fee to see it, but it wasn't caused by a meteorite but hot spring explosion (or something like that).
Kind of like Ubehebe Crater in Death Valley - where she lives
Thank you for the entertaining lecture! You're the only one who can make looking at a hole in the ground interesting!😅
I used to go up the backside horseback. Cheaper. lol But I could see it out my kitchen window. A ranch owns the crater. The fence is for the bull pasture and horse pasture.
Her anger and bitterness seem to have blurred objectivity .. $29 can’t be that big a deal to a big UA-camr
I love how the wind blows up there. Pretty impressive
Aye, 5184. It's so strong it creates a vortex and sucks $29 out ya wallet.
Best comment of the day. Needed a laugh.
Its worth every dime to see where they filmed parts of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind"....Sunset Crater in Arizona....my wife and i visited it why driving from Camp Pendleton in San Diego to Parris Island in SC back in 1986....i still have a Crater Rock
Thar is three reasons not to go!
Not Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Starman with Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen. Check it out it’s a good movie
CE3K was filmed at Devil's Tower in Wyoming.
Starman was filmed here in 1984, awesome movie. CE3K was filmed in Wyoming as well as other locations, but not in AZ.
WH prefers UNnatural wonders.
Wow! That is pretty incredible!! 😊
There’s a home movie of Elvis Presley and his Memphis bunch standing and walking in the very spot you are, I think it’s on the spa guys channel.
I took my son to see the Crater, when he was 14 ... about 29 years ago. At that time, I think the cost was $17 for an adult, and $13 for a person under 16 ... so $30. But I think we went mid week, and including us, there were about 10 people there. Also, they only had I think 2 viewing platforms, not having the highest platform, which gives a much better perspective. As an added thought. I too am frugal, I've oft been told, "I pinch a nickel till the buffalo shits!" .... But you got a little obsessed about paying $29.00. I don't know what the fee to visit the Grand Canyon is ... but it costs you ... and as of 2024, you can't pay cash to do it either. Our Gov'ment, doesn't want cash, credit or debit only!
Thank you for making this attraction free on UA-cam
Your videos are fantastic.I enjoy them so much! 🤩
Dramatic Fanatic also complained about the cost but didn’t go. I would probably still pay for it anyway just because it’s there and I can afford it. Thanks.
We’re all suckers too we just got you paid. It was worth every advertisement I had to watch. Lol
You could get a UA-cam membership 🤣
@@lorrie5881 or just use a completely free ad blocker.
Suckers and fools are born every minute.
In the 1800s all the know-it-all university professors said the crater was caused by a volcanic explosion. Bar-ringer took one look at it a said the crater was from a meteor impact.
It took about 30 years for the professors to agree that the crater was caused by a space rock.
@@pigdroppings But his misestimate of the volume of iron down there used up most of his fortune.
Thanks for sharing your crater visit.👍 My wife and I were there in 2014, but it was after 5pm, so the big hole in the ground was "closed". We were on bit of a tightly scheduled 2000+ mile road trip that ended with a flight from LA back to England, so we missed it.🙁
Wow! It is pretty cool, but thanks for saving me $29 bucks! I guess nowadays one must pick and choose what attractions to see? But then again, I paid over $30 some bucks for a tour of Hoover Dam....so go figure? 🤔 🥴 So it's your choice. Happy trails y'all!! 😆👍
If you think $29.00 is bad wait to you see what the feds would charge you
This is awesome❤❤❤
I must say, it is very fascinating to look at that crater and the striations from the meteor when it hit the earth, must have been one hell of a rock
I always wanted to see that! Thank you.
There is a senior discount too
Thank you for the tour, it's very impressive and yes you were correct in saying " cheap."
I've wanted to stop there since before I 40 went through and took over 66's territory.
Thank you for this presentation.
It looked like besides the hole in the ground there's been a couple million dollars spent on infrastructure. That concrete trail with handrails to the highest point, where you shot the fantastic panoramic view from, wasn't cheap or easy to build way out there. Several other steel and concrete look-out platforms and trails with handrails are there, too. It looks like I may make it there, yet.
Don't forget the paved road and parking lot, air conditioning, and restrooms. Also the elevator; some of us are older now and no longer able to trek through the desert and clamber to the rim.
I have Hopi relatives in Winslow so on my visits when we bring newbies we'll stop at the crater, but we'll take the little free tour they give that takes you outside the building along the rim a ways. its a fun and informative little tour. The last time I visited it was only $25 each person, that was barely over a year ago. I also remember as a kid in the late 70's before it was all upgraded with all the new structures you could dig around the rim of the crater and find fossilized aquatic sea snail shells.
Oooo yay. You are close to me!! Come see me in new river at Shangrila. Nude ranch. You will love it here
ME TOO!!!
Just checked on ms Mitchell. Glad to know she's still among us. Good health Joan.
Driven by many times always wanted to stop and check it out thanks for the info!! 😮
gee it's so nice looking.....wonder if there's a admission charge?
Next time tell us Wonder Hussy! 😆
What's amazing is how close the meteor came to wiping out the visitor center...
Awesome!!!!
I see what you did there! 😂
You're fantastic Ms Wonderhussy, thankyou for this interesting blog. ✨🌠🌈
It's cool you came back around these parts. I remember a video you did a few years ago. I think it was in the Apache Death Cave. That is just a few miles from the Meteor Crater. It's cool you did another video in Arizona.
Interesting story, worth 29dll! 👍👍
Besides the cost of the improvements, facilities, safe and secure walkways, building construction, think of the cost of insurance to allow the public on such unique private property. Is $29 making them rich?
Exactly.
I was just there with my teens, and the weather was pretty bad, but we loved the tour...
Cool crater! On my US roadtrip I went to the "Lunar Crater" in Nevada very early in the morning (ssst, I know it is from volcanic activity and not a meteorite). It was a 20 min offroad drive and so worth it to witness the sunrise. It was priceless, and yet... free :D Belgian chocolatey regards!
I think you will make more than $29.00 on this particular video. Smart choice, Sara.
Thank you, Sarah Jane now I don’t have to work out $100 for my family. It’s not worth it pretty cool but not worth it.
Cool site. Your video makes me want to visit again. Like the backside road. Thanks for sharing.
The horizon are sky view your camera is picking up is gorgeous 🥰🥰🥰 i like the views the hole in the ground is okay pretty the something else thanks for this video 👍👍👍
Yay Wednesday!
The last time I visited the crater it was free and I hiked to the bottom of the crater and was not impressed by the rusty remains. That was over fifty yeas ago.
Me too late 1990s, science museum, deck everything looks the same really. Maybe they only charged a fee for the museum. Anyway its going to a good cause- The original Barringer Fam trust maintain this open to the public and provide ed grants to students & research.
i hiked down to the bottom around 1960. It's more impressive from the bottom. That hole was created in a flash of plasma in seconds.
Well now it gonna cost you $29
Just love your stories and adventure videos, hope you come to Oregon, Crater Lake, loads of hot springs and a wonderful west coast with yummy Dungeness crab and clams simply for the catching and cooking.
I’ve always wanted to see that crater. Now I’m planning on heading out that way.
I LOVE your rants… and your research is also very impressive… you are dedicated to displaying as well as pursuing every angle and at an expense that really places YOUR videos at the TOP of all I have seen on you-tube…. I have been to this particular crater, although I don’t remember as much detail as you presented, which is one of the things I really enjoy about YOUR videos…. Thank you Sara…. You rock

Thanks for the heads up. Ive passed it up at least 20 times driving from central oregon to Texas. I will deffinately continue passing it up. Next stop winslow for gas and Amarillo for Taco Villa.

The top fee (per person) can be $390!
Loved this video. So interesting-both on a Scientific and societal level. Really enjoyed learning about the crater I’ve driven by a few times.
I was there in ‘65. There was a trail around the rim visitors could walk.
Closed down after a college boy fell in the crater and his parents sued the company...Close the trail or give us a million dollars.
Glad you did this video, I will continue to keep it off of my bucket list. Been by there on I-40 many times and you saved me $29. Thank you. Will start thinking of you as Wonderful Hussy.
$35 to see the hole in the ground called the Grand Canyon. And you can't even film a UA-cam video there.
i liked that view of that storm coming in.
We visited There back in 60s my brother and .myself and sisters climbed down to the center there were drilled holes back then and that crashed plane was there. Still pretty impressive when think how much dirt got moved instantly.
$29.00 to me a a bit steep. Thank you for going, now I won't have to pay! I am curious how much it was 10 years ago?
How cool. My wife and I are taking a vacation trip from Oregon to Arizona and New Mexico this coming week.
Our plan is to check out the crater. Is it $29 a person or $29 a car?

Looks like lots of fun!
Yup, been there with my son last year. We were totally underwhelmed.
For 29 bits of "folding", i would have been too, mr Keefe.
What exactly were you expecting?
I went to Meteor Crater in my teens (1960s) but I have no recollection of a ticket cost. I have the feeling that people don't go down to the bottom anymore, but I did. They had a bunch of rocks or cinder blocks down there, and I spelled out "Hi Mom!". Climbing down and up again was not easy. I lost an instamatic camera on the way down.
There was an explanation for why they didn't immediately find the meteor. They assumed, round crater, must be in the center, otherwise it would be oval. Later, somebody did some experiments shooting a gun into mud. It turned out no matter how acute the angle of approach it always left a round hole! And sure enough, the meteor wasn't in the crater, it was a significant distance outside it.
