So, new format and a bunch of games here. Which ones did you like the look of, which ones didn't grab you? And what do you think of the format overall? Let me know.

I really enjoyed this format. Hearing what games aren’t worth my money is valuable and not investing a ton of time in hearing that is perfect.

Exactly the point, I'm all about matching people up to games they will like, not hyping up every game i play, so that sounds ideal.

@@3MBG I love how close polynesian numbers are to each other. 5 to 1 in Maori is close to samoan: Lima, Fa, Tolu, Lua, Tasi.

We have PLOTALOT and it is so cutthroat. Every time I'm about to make a good move, the girlfriend does something evil to my garden. Had to play more aggressive to finally get my first win.
I've seen OHANAMI around and hesitated, but it does look quite good. Maybe I'll purchase. Maybe. 🤔

We have LOVED Ohanami with my group. We can get a game in quickly in 15-20 minutes while it is still got some decisions to it. The game is much different between two players when compared to 3 or 4.

The new format is great and makes so much sense!
I really like Orchard and play it and other small box (or wallet games in the case of ButtonShy) solo games a lot. I find that I tend to play them on a tray or small table, sat on the sofa, usually after the kids have gone to bed, in the shortish amount of time that I have on school nights when I have to get up early in the morning. There's very little to think about with these games in terms of setup and the rules are very straightforward so I can just play them quickly.
They also take very little table space so if my games/craft/dining table/desk is covered with piles of the usual detritus then I don't need to worry about having to clear it before playing. I can grab a tray or these days, I have a small table with legs that slide under the sofa that's just perfect.
The times when the kids are with their Dad, I play them on low spoons days, when getting out a larger game is too intimidating.
Of course, I also live alone (apart from the kids) and even before Covid, I often only played with others every other week, so these games have really enabled me to have a wider selection of games that I can play solo, even when I only have a short amount of time and/or energy to do so.
All that said, since I've been really ill this last year and one of the primary symptoms being brain fog, I've been finding it much harder to play solo games because there's no breaks! I bought myself Under Falling Skies for Christmas and I managed to get 50% of the way through a game and then 75% of the way through a game. It's an excellent game but it's easier to play something with the kids even with the extra kid-wrangling that involves because at least my brain gets a rest in between my turns :-)
    (Sorry, J, I'm rambling again.)

Thought the format was super good! Love seeing more from you. I have been eyeing Ohanami for a bit now. Trying to wait for it to reappear at my FLGS. Looks like a really good, engaging game I can play with people who only like card games, and a game I will actually like.

Excellent format. I like the idea that you're going to present five different, under the radar games to me, and I know I'm probably not going to buy them all (or maybe even any of them). It's kind of like advanced browsing at the game store. But you know what? I saw enough to know that I will pick up plotalot for my wife and I, and Fruit Picking for the kids, so thanks!

Perfect, yeah, all of these games just fell below the threshold for a full recap, and i have a stack of games like that. I'd be struggling with what to do with them that kept in the ethos of the channel, tight scripted reviews. So cheers, glad it worked

Great video! I clicked because the theme and the looks of the games are straight up my alley. Ecosystem looked really cool by the cover and the art on the cards is great, but too bad the game didn't seem that interesting. I already have Ohanami ordered and this review made me feel like I made the right choice. Plotalot piqued my interest though, so I gotta add that to my want list. Small box games like these are my favourite ones to play between heavy games or to take to cafés to play with friends. I'm a sucker for nature-themed games

I bought Ecosystem for like $20 and thought it was fine. I agree the cards when placed don't feel connected in the way they are intended to feel connected in the same way like a game such as Carcassone does. I thought it was better than the other ecosystem game I bought around the same time named Gods Love Dinosaurs which was a big box game but easily could have been a small box game if it didn't have the meeples or something. I thought that one was bad because most of the tile placement seems to have too many open ended choices. You would actively have to work hard to purposely make a mistake. You're video made me interested in Ohanami if I see it. Who doesn't like Japanese gardens anyway.

This format should help you with reviewing small games. Or bland ones.
Even though I liked to hear the reasons why you didn't feel for that mars game, sometimes a game is just ok and doesn't deserve more screentime and effort.

    • @3MBG
      @3MBG  3 роки тому

Yeah, sometimes a game like On Mars or Britannia leaves me wanting to talk about it a lot more than others. But yeah, some games it's just not worth the effort. Like, i have no idea how i would have padded the orchard 9 card game out to a full 3 minute recap.
