Looks like Otis has completely bonded with you guys. He’s really cute it’s a wonder you’re able to get anything done just wanting to play with him. Such a beautiful stretch of the river with lovely homes and water that looks like liquid velvet. I really enjoy the historical narrative as you float gently down the wide expanse of the river.
I'm so glad you did some research on Medmenham and the aerial photography unit in WW2. My grandfather, Dr Hugh Hamshaw-Thomas was in charge. He was a well known botanist at Cambridge University and was drafted in to run it. Google him and you will see what an amazing man he was. He was friends with Lawrence of Arabia and photographed Palestine and the surrounding area.

By jove, I say they pop up on Tues or Wed and just give us a tiny 5 minutes of evenings along a campsite ( by the boat) and inside just watching Otis play and learning things and settling into evening and night-light. I worked with Special needs kids and adults for 40 some years. I also have the anxiety things going on like Colin. I so admire how Colin copes with things and how Shaun is such a help. Wish I had a Shaun ! Anyway, you are a blessing to me and are taking me on the best vacation ever. I could watch you all day. Interested to hear the history of Danesfield House. My Grandad was a photographer with the RAF. Long after the war, when it was no longer a secret, he told his family that one of the jobs he’d been assigned to during the war was photographing pictures from the National Gallery that were being hidden in a Welsh quarry, in case they got bombed in London. Love the historical snippets you weave into your vlogs. More Otis please! And that poor woman that jogged past at the end! Ooh, you are awful!
That’s really interesting. Did you ever hear about the 3D photos the R.A.F developed in WW2 to give them more accuracy on the targets and German installations? It hard to explain by they built layers up on the aerial photos so they looked like real building as target sites. But like a older version of Google maps and their 3D map system. Great technology for the 1940s👍

I'm glad you told the story of Marlow bridge and its connection with Budapest, or I would have been forced to do so. I know that stretch of river well as I used to live in Maidenhead and often walked it. On the subject of Marlow bridge, back in the 1957, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire highway engineers had serious plans to demolish it and replace it with concrete bridge. A local councillor, John Griffith founded the Marlow Bridge Preservation Society which succeeded in preserving the bridge (which is now grade 1 listed). John Griffith, who was a nationally renowned professor of law, died in 1910 aged 92. I believe there is a small plaque recording his role near the bridge on the Buckinghamshire bridge. Because the bridge is a major bottleneck (and has a 3 tonne weight limit), it has been instrumental in preserving the nature of the High Street. Other Thames towns have not always been so lucky. My cousin was married in All Saints Church by that bridge. Sadly, there wasn't a posh reception at the very plush Compleat Angler hotel on the bank opposite. We ended up in a scout hall for that, although such a thing would probably have been wasted on me as I would have been about 9 years old. A bit further down river is a bridge made famous by JMW Turner, but that's to come. Cookham, were you moored, was the home of another famous artist, Stanley Spencer, and he had a very interesting and somewhat turbulent life.

Historian here - got to tell you about Anne of Cleves! Shaun - you're nearly right about it being a consolation prize. Because Anne went quietly (unlike two previous ex wives, Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn) and obeyed the king's will without any embarassment (about not being able to um, consumate the marriage on the night of his wedding to Anne) Henry VIII decided to be generous to her and give her a lot of property and the title of the 'King's Sister'. It worked out really well for Anne because she became her own ruler, if you like, she didn't have to obey a husband in daily life, she owned her own property, and she didn't have to go back to Germany (Cleves) and live under the control of her brother, which she didn't really want to do. And I don't think she really wanted to be married to Henry, I don't think many women would have wanted that at that time, he was old and fat, and had a leg ulcer that would not heal, apparently rather smelly. Anne was quite happy to leave him to young Katherine Howard. Anne and Katherine actually got on rather well - to the point that there's a record of them dancing the night away while grumpy old Henry stomped off to bed :D So yeah, a centre of sports excellence seems rather fitting! Anne never married again, and died in 1557. Do I get Otis cuddles as a reward for the history? please say yes!

Was meant more as a happy "yay, history, lemme tell you more!" thing. :D I suppose I don't see it as a consolation prize cos I don't think Anne needing much consoling, I think she was rather happy to get away as lightly as she did (it was a terribly dangerous situation she was in).
I recently listened to the Noble Blood podcast's series about each of Henry VIII's wives and particularly enjoyed the one about Anne of Cleves because she's not one of them that you hear a ton about other than "oh he divorced her because she was ugly" type stuff but it seems that she was a clever woman and ended up not too badly off out of the whole arrangement.

I'd love to listen to the podcast, but I'm deaf so that's a bit beyond me, but if you'd like a good biography of all six wives, an oldie but a goodie is Antonia Fraser's book, I think it's called the six wives of Henry VIII. She really goes behind the stereotypes, and the usual stuff, and digs out the little known detail. Great book! Katherine Howard is an interesting one. I think quite a few historians now are re-evaluating what happened to her, esp her childhood, before she even met Henry - but then, we always view the past through our own times. 🙂 I think people will always be fascinated by the six wives - it's certainly part of what got me interested in history as a child (although nothing to do with what I'm studying now.... Not even the same time period!)
Wow. 70 yr old man here (Pat Wallace). Transplanted to America at 17. Raised in Marlow, ( #6, Beaumont Rise, Marlow / New Road, Marlow Bottom) in 50s/60s. So happy to see the old place. I even saw that boat ramp abutting All Saints church. My Junior School was 100yds up on left before it was converted to condos, I believe. We used to play football in the fields near Marlow Lock. 🙂

Gosh, like a mill pond, no issues with the tide then. Medmenham, tricky one to say eh! Probably pronounced Mendham by the locals. Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII, lets go for 1536, I'll Google it - [When Henry VIII broke with Rome and began to dissolve the monasteries, the smaller ones were broken up first. Medmenham Abbey definitely fell under that category. In July 1536, the abbot and only one monk lived there--when they were evicted and pensioned off, the abbot received a pension of 10 marks.] I'll bet he bit off Henry's hand for that amount of wad! Founded in the 12th was one of the Cistercian Abbeys and a satellite of Woburn. Cistercian foundations were usually richly endowed but little Medmenham seems to have missed the purse when it was handed round and remained quite a small and to some degree a poor affair. Customer service course (Thames lock-keepers), a good slapping more like would perchance be the ticket. Bisham Priory was built for the Augustinian Canons (usually smaller foundations with very modest aisleless churches), nothing now remains of the medieval Priory. I've turned this into a Henry number 8 historical trudge! Sorry. Summer fun on the Thames guys, and Otis bless him, enjoy.

That’s really interesting. Did you ever hear about the 3D photos the R.A.F developed in WW2 to give them more accuracy on the targets and German installations? It hard to explain by they built layers up on the aerial photos so they looked like real building as target sites. But like a older version of Google maps and their 3D map system. Great technology for the 1940s👍

I'm glad you told the story of Marlow bridge and its connection with Budapest, or I would have been forced to do so. I know that stretch of river well as I used to live in Maidenhead and often walked it.
On the subject of Marlow bridge, back in the 1957, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire highway engineers had serious plans to demolish it and replace it with concrete bridge. A local councillor, John Griffith founded the Marlow Bridge Preservation Society which succeeded in preserving the bridge (which is now grade 1 listed). John Griffith, who was a nationally renowned professor of law, died in 1910 aged 92.
I believe there is a small plaque recording his role near the bridge on the Buckinghamshire bridge. Because the bridge is a major bottleneck (and has a 3 tonne weight limit), it has been instrumental in preserving the nature of the High Street. Other Thames towns have not always been so lucky.
My cousin was married in All Saints Church by that bridge. Sadly, there wasn't a posh reception at the very plush Compleat Angler hotel on the bank opposite. We ended up in a scout hall for that, although such a thing would probably have been wasted on me as I would have been about 9 years old.
A bit further down river is a bridge made famous by JMW Turner, but that's to come.
Cookham, were you moored, was the home of another famous artist, Stanley Spencer, and he had a very interesting and somewhat turbulent life.

Historian here - got to tell you about Anne of Cleves! Shaun - you're nearly right about it being a consolation prize. Because Anne went quietly (unlike two previous ex wives, Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn) and obeyed the king's will without any embarassment (about not being able to um, consumate the marriage on the night of his wedding to Anne) Henry VIII decided to be generous to her and give her a lot of property and the title of the 'King's Sister'. It worked out really well for Anne because she became her own ruler, if you like, she didn't have to obey a husband in daily life, she owned her own property, and she didn't have to go back to Germany (Cleves) and live under the control of her brother, which she didn't really want to do. And I don't think she really wanted to be married to Henry, I don't think many women would have wanted that at that time, he was old and fat, and had a leg ulcer that would not heal, apparently rather smelly. Anne was quite happy to leave him to young Katherine Howard. Anne and Katherine actually got on rather well - to the point that there's a record of them dancing the night away while grumpy old Henry stomped off to bed :D So yeah, a centre of sports excellence seems rather fitting! Anne never married again, and died in 1557.

@@FoxesAfloat depends what you mean by consolation prize, I guess :) You weren't mistaken - this wasn't meant as a 'correction' or anything like that. Was meant more as a happy "yay, history, lemme tell you more!" thing. :D I suppose I don't see it as a consolation prize cos I don't think Anne needing much consoling, I think she was rather happy to get away as lightly as she did (it was a terribly dangerous situation she was in).
I recently listened to the Noble Blood podcast's series about each of Henry VIII's wives and particularly enjoyed the one about Anne of Cleves because she's not one of them that you hear a ton about other than "oh he divorced her because she was ugly" type stuff but it seems that she was a clever woman and ended up not too badly off out of the whole arrangement.

I'd love to listen to the podcast, but I'm deaf so that's a bit beyond me, but if you'd like a good biography of all six wives, an oldie but a goodie is Antonia Fraser's book, I think it's called the six wives of Henry VIII. She really goes behind the stereotypes, and the usual stuff, and digs out the little known detail. Great book! Katherine Howard is an interesting one. I think quite a few historians now are re-evaluating what happened to her, esp her childhood, before she even met Henry - but then, we always view the past through our own times. 🙂 I think people will always be fascinated by the six wives - it's certainly part of what got me interested in history as a child (although nothing to do with what I'm studying now.... Not even the same time period!)
Wow. 70 yr old man here (Pat Wallace). Transplanted to America at 17. Raised in Marlow, ( #6, Beaumont Rise, Marlow / New Road, Marlow Bottom) in 50s/60s. So happy to see the old place. I even saw that boat ramp abutting All Saints church. My Junior School was 100yds up on left before it was converted to condos, I believe. We used to play football in the fields near Marlow Lock. 🙂

Gosh, like a mill pond, no issues with the tide then. Medmenham, tricky one to say eh! Probably pronounced Mendham by the locals. Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII, lets go for 1536, I'll Google it - [When Henry VIII broke with Rome and began to dissolve the monasteries, the smaller ones were broken up first. Medmenham Abbey definitely fell under that category. In July 1536, the abbot and only one monk lived there--when they were evicted and pensioned off, the abbot received a pension of 10 marks.] I'll bet he bit off Henry's hand for that amount of wad! Founded in the 12th was one of the Cistercian Abbeys and a satellite of Woburn. Cistercian foundations were usually richly endowed but little Medmenham seems to have missed the purse when it was handed round and remained quite a small and to some degree a poor affair. Customer service course (Thames lock-keepers), a good slapping more like would perchance be the ticket. Bisham Priory was built for the Augustinian Canons (usually smaller foundations with very modest aisleless churches), nothing now remains of the medieval Priory. I've turned this into a Henry number 8 historical trudge! Sorry. Summer fun on the Thames guys, and Otis bless him, enjoy.
