And I can't draw landscapes to save my life but I honestly don't think I am obligated to learn how because I am a character designer, not a background artist. I would personally like to learn how to get better at drawing locations, eventually, but it's not something I am absolutely obligated to learn as a character artist.

The moment you start forcing someone to draw a certain thing against their wishes you're taking away their creativity. Diversity is a great thing to have in your art, but not having it doesn't make you a bad artist. Frida Kahlo always drew self portraits of herself, does that make her a bad artist? Of course not! Also the bashing of beginner artist needs to seriously stop, beginners drawing a feature wrong doesn't justify harrasment. Critique needs to be Constructive otherwise it's useless

Like bro sometimes the woman is a gossipy tradwife whose greatest joy is her clean house/young children, sometimes she's a badass teen dystopia protagonist who has no interest in a heterosexual relationship, and sometimes she's something in between those two things! @ummtulip yes!! Especially since certian people express themselves and their experiences through their art. Basically what I'm getting at is like my ocs and my art is based on me, how I've grown up, the things I've seen, and what I've been drawn to. I live in a very small north American town and I have not barely ever met any black people my age or even in general. I also live in a family where most of my cousins and my dad and sisters are on the lean side. My heritage and culture is mainly European German and caucasian, with hints of tropical places like Papua new guinea and Paraguay where my parents grew up in my home, usually in the form of trinkets and stories. My dad is German and my mum is mostly Dutch, English and Irish.
This is why I tend to not draw dark skinned people, I don't usually see them as often. But I want to be able to express what I've experienced and learned, which has been much of my own mental disabilities, experience and lifestyle, rather than minority lives, like poc, women (especially with their bodies and body issues), and physically handicapped people, which I do not know the experiences of well.
When I learn art better, I will become more diverse. But I only feel safe expressing things I have an understanding of.

Just a few examples. If people are saying that you HAVE to be able to draw certain groups of people then why are we drawing the line at black people? All these Twitter people "care so much about representation" but are ignorant of the fact of how ignorant they are to a variety of different people. Black people deserve representation in media and art. Just like everyone else does. But those people who push this narrative onto others' simply forget about everyone else who basically has no representation at all. It doesn't make sense. I think it's important for every artist to learn how to draw different features at one point in their life. Just because it's great to open yourself up to different cultures and styles. I have been working professionally for the past 10+ years, I only accept changes from clients because they are paying for the art.
If a random person gives their opinion, I read it, and one thing that is really easy to disarm a person is this- “Thank you for your opinion, I will keep that in mind the next time I draw this character”, it kind of puts them in a hard spot, because being polite and kind makes them to be the ones in the wrong (and some are, many do give bad faith opinions).
I try to bring variety to my art, because as a professional you have to draw many different things, and you never know what a client wants and keep in mind, that once you give the artwork to the client(I'm not talking about personal commissions) this same artwork can be changed without your consent, but since they paid for the artwork they can do whatever they want, it's the simple reality of commercial illustration, if anyone ever wants to enter this professional field, be prepared, most of the time you only find out the colors have been changed when the artwork is out in the wild.
People feel entitled to others arts, but again, it truly is hard when you want to share a drawing that you are doing for fun, and a random person gives you a list of how wrong your work is.
If the person is not drawing something extremely offensive, let them have fun, let them draw, is not hurting anyone.
Kids, don't gate keep art, and try to be kinder to others, remember the person behind the artwork has feelings too so stop trying to get a reaction from them, it's not easy to be an artist, so a little bit of kindness can help a lot.

I was hesitant to see what your opinion was based on the title, but the longer I listened the more I learned I actually agreed with you but didn’t know how to word it.
As an artist who’s a part of several minority groups, I do feel that while representation is nice, I agree it’s better if it comes from a place of genuine want to further your craft / allyship (and what I mean by that is- at least for me, I like making diverse characters for my comics because I didn’t have a lot of rep growing up, and it makes me happy to see my own identities showcased, and I enjoy doing the same for other communities my friends/people I admire are in. But because I want to, not that I feel obligated).
Learning art is hard, especially when sometimes there aren’t sufficient tutorials on how to draw the thing you want to learn (prime example, I couldn’t find nearly any examples on how to draw a cane appropriately until I took photos of my own and scaled the proportions to paper, and compared that to other pictures of cane users)
The internet will always assume malice before ignorance, and it’s honestly depressing to think about, especially because there’s probably a lot of young artists who worry about backlash simply from trying to learn. And if you’re teaching yourself how to draw and you want to improve, it’s hard to do so without some level of feedback
Anyone trying to learn a new art principle, be patient with yourself, and try not to take the internet too seriously 💙✨

But even outside that if you are allowed to refuse to draw them then you are allowed to refuse to learn how to draw them as well, they kinda go hand in hand.
There are lots of things to learn in life so why waste time learning something you didn't want to learn in the first place when you could have learned something you accsually did want to learn?

    • @starlette7820

Dude those two sentences are literally the same thing, the second one is just worded more nicely. Saying that they SHOULD try learning how to do something is the same thing as saying that they are obligated to.
No one should have to learn anything they dont want to. As someone in the comments already mentioned, Frida Kahlo who is an incredibly famous artist drew literally nothing but self portraits of herself. She never learned how to paint other kinds of people, and yet she is still a famous artist that many people look up to because despite always using the same subject, her self portraits were all extremely creative and expressive.
As long as their art isnt being used to intentionally harm or degrade someone, people should just be allowed to draw whatever they want regardless of whether they include disabled or POC people in their work or not. Draw and paint whatever inspires you.

I believe that it was made as sort of a response to the Kooleen situation (maybe???) and possibly to the people who criticise artists like Sam does Arts for “being unable to draw dark skinned people.” The only complain I had about the video is that the drawings of the darker skin characters didn’t reflect much light on the skin, which is something that a lot of black and brown people pointed out, but me and most of those people agreed that it was mistake rather than it being intentionally left out.

Disabled artist here! I agree that nobody is obligated to draw anything. Hell, I'm a cane user and former wheelchair user and I can't draw those, so I don't. I'm not comfortable drawing those things just because it's very hard to do and can be stressful, especially when you're self-conscious about your art (hi, I'm one of those people, lol) and won't accept it if it doesn't look the way you were hoping.
Don't force yourself to draw something that you don't want to, especially if it's too hard! I'm also not good with drawing people of color and people with anything but really thin body types, mostly because I'm just bad with proportions, so I just don't draw that kind of stuff (to be fair I just can't draw humans in general). While it's always good to learn, it's also good to ask for some constructive criticism from trusted people who might know how to draw those things so they can give some good advice!

I think that artists should draw what they themself want to draw. Yes, if you get a commission of a very specific thing, if you happen to accept the commission you should do your best to please the customer, but if it's a project of your own, then do what you feel works for the art.
The biggest issue I think happens way too often is that some people don't know how to give critique. Instead of even trying to be polite and suggest different methods of working, far too often people go straigth into being as rude as possible and just yelling "YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG!" without telling what is wrong or not understanding how for example colours and shading work.

The idea behind "drawing at least one person of color can help you not get canceled because you drew one already" is most likely why he got backlash. That falls under forcing people to feel obligated to draw something very specific solely to fill a quota. Plus the implication of never having drawn something before being a green light for getting bullied is absolutely appalling. I'm sure the video was helpful for how to draw people of color, but how messages are conveyed and why they are put out at all are just as important as the message itself, if not more. If he made it a simple tutorial without any "Twitter is gonna cancel and harrass you if you do it wrong" stuff, then people probably would have taken it as a normal tutorial and no backlashing

That last part was such a help to me
My opinion is that most people when making art have some sort of self expression in it. Some people express more of who they are than others, at least more obviously.

I remember seeing a review for a random movie, I can't remember what movie exactly, but it said it was boring and having more diversity among the characters would have made it better.
I think this is part of the problem--people conflating "diversity = good story". I think encouraging diversity is a great thing, and it is important to keep in mind if you're aiming to become a professional artist or storyteller. But there are plenty of terrible stories, or even ones that go into the bounds of racism/ableism/etc, that have "diverse" casts. It can reach a wider audience and also improve your own empathy and understanding of the world, but instead of meeting a certain quota, I think there should be more discussion about promoting other's work that genuinely showcases different characters, viewpoints, and stories--and even that shouldn't be "demanded" of anyone. Some people just don't like clutter on their timeline and only want to follow like two people! My two cents anyway.

I do also agree that learning how to draw different proportions and skin tones can help your art skills be more versatile, but the fear of getting it wrong is what's stopping me. Plus I think it's ironic how people get upity about ethnic characters and their skin tones being perfect to a T (I see this so much with Miguel), meanwhile people constantly make white characters black and no one bats an eye. So I actually find it very difficult to draw people who have varying characteristics (i.e. wider nose, higher/lower cheek bones, non-hooded eyes).
Most of my characters are just self depiction, or depicting those close to me (rn mainly being my husband and my kids too. And we all look fairly alike).
I still try to draw characters different from me, but I can't do it from memory/ without references/ as quickly. I can do stuff like darker skin and accessories, but faces especially are very difficult for me to draw. For most of my life I couldn't even bring myself to look at people's faces. I'd constantly even get family members confused. I thought I had like 5 aunt's on my dad's side of the family, when there were only 3. I thought my mom had like 7 brothers. She only had 4.
It's something I struggle with. And something that I'm working to improve. However, I'm not obligated to do so. I don't owe anyone art that looks like them. But my skills are admittedly lacking if I can't, rather than won't.

the saddest part is even if you were to bowl over and conform to their requirements, a small amount of people would still complain and probably say your work is inaccurate or perpetuating stereotypes, which might actually create less diversity in art. i know there's probably a good bit of people who avoid posting work that includes these groups just because their work will be seen as offensive.
i also find a little weird how physical traits are seen as so important, as if the skin color or able status is more important than the character or art style.... why should a character be defined by their disability or their race?
for example, i'm disabled; but it's not a defining trait of mine, i'd be the same person if i woke up "normal" so i try to express traits that actually define who i am, such as my snow leopard ears =^w^=
i mean i draw plenty of self portraits and dont include my disability because i'm lazy or it doesn't fit into my art style, the way i draw hands is very stylized and it'd be impossible to portray my own deformities without changing my overall style lmao doesn't mean i thinks its bad or ugly. it's not like i refuse to portray it, i just dont give a shit :D

it’s awful the way people act towards artists, and tell them they need to do this, or need to draw that if they aren’t comfortable with it or are afraid to post it because of the backlash they’ll receive for mistakes they may make while learning. being an artist is so draining nowadays.
to comment on the tazak video - it made my skin crawl. i didn’t watch the whole video, i don’t think i even watched half of it, because the whole thing rubbed me the wrong way. it felt like the only reason he made it was to show people how to not get canceled, and not to actually give them tips and an actually helpful tutorial. it felt like he was doing it solely as a way to appear as a good artist, not because he actually wanted to.

Which won’t make them want to learn how to draw those other things. No one is obligated to draw anything, and it really pissed me off when I saw someone in a discord I’m in share a tweet that basically said, “if you can’t draw a black person, or a fat person, or especially a fat black person, you’re not as good an artist as you think you are” and was agreeing to it

Okay.....so can i just say -and i literally CANNOT EXPRESS THIS ENOUGH how grateful and relieved I am as a fellow artist to hear you say this? Most of the time it feels like im the only only one who feel this way because its like I live in this echo chanmber in the art community and if you have the WRONG opinions or do something they dont like, the fanatics in the art community literally will brand you a terrible person with malicious intent. My family and friends CONSTANTLY ask me WHY im not posting my artworks or selling them or even posting them online and part of the reason is what ive seen going on in the art community. Im still debating posting anything I make out of fear of saying or doing something people dont like when there was no ill will involved and having the mob come after me. I have a black character that im designing because ive had her in my head for days that ive come to call jasmine. But because when i imagine her, i see her with beautiful long curly raven hair and because she black, i worry people are going to snap at me saying i did her skin tone wrong or "why didnt you give her dreads!?" Or something silly like that. Its crazy how they go on a witch hunt for you when your just learning or trying to create something new or beautiful. As an artist i never thought with all these new 'thou shalt not' rules that the art community is placing on artists that I would EVER feel like i was being told to paint inside the frame so to speak. It feels so restrictive. But hearing you talk about this makes me feel like im a solider walking through a mine feild and i just found a fellow solider trying to survive to draw another day. So for that thank you! I feel alot less alone in the art community now that i know its not just me who feels this way and it feels nicer on your channel like we can just relax and draw. Thank you so much and you just got a new subscriber.

Just started calling them “Moral High Ground Artists” myself. The ones draw poc, break stereotypes etc which is great *for them* but they just can’t not go to another page and call someone one of the ‘ists or ‘phobic off of minor errors or simply drawing things they’re comfortable with. It’s like they have to make it known that they’re on the right side of the drama, support complete equality n stuff which again isn’t bad necessarily. Once again it’s just their extreme execution of it to probably bring traction to their own pages and content
That and personally I was born and raised in a very diverse part of the UK and it has not made the approach to drawing different features easier. It’s not smth I’d make out to be easy even if it’s everyday life for some and the people that claim otherwise have not lifted a pencil 💀

The best solution is SO obvious, that anyone who fails to follow this ONE specific rule is objectively either EVIL or are LESSER for not following it-
We MUST draw EXCLUSIVELY using amorphous blobs with googly eyes for our character designs, anything less is a crime against humanity punishable 100 years under the Atlantic Ocean without oxygen.
    In fact-
Only drawing using circles is allowed for the rest of humanity until the end of time.

It's insane it happened with LGBT characters or disabilities too. I remember reading a message different people got saying need to be poc, disabled or LGBT± to draw characters that way, and on the other side people getting messages that you're racist, ableist or homophobic because you didn't draw characters that way.

I have an even more controversial opinion: THERE IS NO WRONG WAY TO DRAW SOMETHING. There, I said it. It's called an art style, people. There is no wrong way to draw a character. it's art. It's not meant to be reality, it's meant to be your own interpretation of reality. That means ANYTHING GOES. If someone gets offended by the way someone drew something, they're wrong for that.

As a woman on the chubbier side; if someone wants to primarily (or only!) draw skinny boys, as long as they aren’t exhibiting REAL signs of sexism/fatphobia, LEAVE THEM ALONE!!!!!!! You don’t have to like it!!! Just leave them the fuck alone!!!!
YES, that CAN be a red flag for bigoted viewpoints, but if I went around accusing everyone that draws like that of sexism i would be so tired always.

    • @ritaerror7829

Like, not to be mean or something, but in general skinny type is the best for studies and anatomy, then after getting general proportions and bone structure, you can learn adding fat and studying it in general (of course you can go straight to it but... results may vary). Some people can't even draw fat, because it does change proportions, and it will always look off in their eyes. I actually have it with skin-and-bones type of humans... I can draw skeletons, but either human will have some fat, or I can't really draw them because it looks weird XD

    • @MugiHours
      @MugiHours 3 місяці тому

Why is drawing primarily skinny boys a red flag for bigoted viewpoints? I draw them largely because I'm a fanartist for an anime idol boy game that I really enjoy playing, and the style seeps into my OC designs because it's what I'm used to drawing. It's not anything deeper than that and doesn't say anything about my viewpoints on anything else.
Unless someone has overtly political art, it's pretty much impossible to tell what their viewpoints on stuff is from their art alone...

Hot take: Every artist need to learn how to say "Fuck off" to every toxic user. It should be up to the artist however they want and how to draw, and if they don't want to draw a subject. Let them be. If the artist don't want to put in an effort to draw a subject. Let them be.
That goes to normal users, or other artists as well. If you see an artist getting attacked and harassed. Tell the toxic attackers to "Fuck off", no matter how many "-ists" and "-phobics" buzzwords they toss out. Don't even reason with the attackers. Anything the attackers say, just respond "Fuck off", and report them. "Shut up", "Move on" works too.
Cancel Culture, and Toxicity only wins if people allow it to win.

0:24 I saw that video, I even commented on it. The guy was making a light hearted joke because everyone knows how quick social media is to cancel someone. Through out the video he was making jokes and memeing as he was drawing a quick easy method to coloring dark skin. It wasn’t a deep dive art tutorial and was supposed to be fun and encourage beginner artists to try and color darker skin. But even early on the title attracted ppl who were extremely defensive and angry. For example, the very first comment I saw. I wish I screenshotted it, but it accused his title of saying that “black people are angry and aggressive and he needs to change it” like ???
It was frustrating to see ppl jump online and harass him, because he had good intentions.
I commented that I knew a fair amount of beginner artists who were afraid of drawing other races bc they didn’t want to accidentally come off as racist, especially when the art community is so nitpicky when it comes to race. so they don’t even try. I saw some comments on there too saying how an artist was accused of being racist when he drew black ppl, but he was black himself and still learning.
We shouldn’t demand ppl to draw this or that, we should encourage them and let them make that decision for themselves.

I.e. if someone doesnt really draw/isnt really interested in queer characters, no need to draw em ofc! But it doesnt mean every group has to be Amazed with the same type of character- (and its okay if they vent NON-TARGETED bout art frustrations in a personal blog)
