  • You can smell the rotting aroma metres away and it is this attraction that draws the curious crowd and serious followers. This is Desa Setapak and this stall is as unique as its only main serving, stinky Taiwanese style tofu. The one-man show stall operator appears just past 11pm to get ready to work at a dark lonely side lane. Guess why he is located here. Obviously, because his serving smells bad and other night stalls would not welcome it! A long queue of young people has already formed by 10pm. On an average he serves around 150 to 200 customers a night. Some come to experience, some are regulars, knowing all about the health benefits of this stinky dish that has been said to reduce cholesterol and osteoporosis.
    Stinky tofu originated in China during the Qing Dynasty but became popular in Taiwan as a ‘national’ dish. This dish or delicacy is basically highly fermented tofu in a concoction of salt, bamboo shoot, vegetable and even meat. The process seems simple, but truly fermented ones take months to perfect. For those who have not tasted this exceptional dish, just ignore the smell and try it. It has been said it tastes nothing like its smell.
