Of course you had done a video about this, I googled Multifasciatus vs Similis. And you video came up first. I have never kept any of them, but been in the hobby for 30 years. I am finally getting them, I think Similis looks better, BUT they are usually twice the price. So I am asking my aquarium guy now. How much for each! :-D And people always keep Multis on white sand, why? I am keeping mine on black fine sand, and a couple of kilos of crushed black marble in the botom to stabalise the PH with higher KH.
Beautiful fish! I really like the idea of using a black background to showcase the bright colored fish. I do that with my bright colored fish. The black background really makes the colors of the fish pump.
I mean make the colors of the fish pop
Me too - darker backgrounds and substrate make a lot of fish look really nice!
Ive been scoping out some simils at my lfs. So cool to see them on a darker substrate here!
Again you've read my mind! I was just thinking about this and looking into different shell dwellers earlier this week. Thanks for another great video!
Good to hear! Hope you enjoy whatever you decide to get. :-)
Thanks! Settling on a tanganyika tank and have actually been wondering which I should get. I'm still up in the air but this is a good side-by-side to reference while I decide
Both are great!
Can i put neolamprologus cylindricus in with my habs and peacocks
It's possible, but I've also seen it not work out too.
Man, I'd like to have some of your simillis. They are so nice. Do you sell them?
Thank you! I only sell them at Chicagoland swaps and auctions.
Are there any crustaceans you might recommend for putting in a 10 gallon with a Betta? (Male)
None that I can guarantee that won't be eaten or damage the betta. The only inverts we have with bettas are mystery snails.
Hi, I have a 55Ltr tank with only two Ocellatus shell dwellers. They're doing well! Lots of shells and room! There's an area of the tank floor that hasn't been dominated by the two females. Id like to get a multi or a similis but I am not sure if they could live together?
I probably wouldn't try to mix them given they all inhabit the lower part of the tank. The Golds will eventually when that battle - they can turn very aggressive.
Whats the dark substrate you're using and I noticed the rock and sand don't look like they alter the pH, so is there anything you use to buffer the water thanks, Alan.
Good question! The darker substrate is Caribsea Naturals I believe. They have different types that will either have no impact on your water or buffer it a little higher. We don't have to worry about it because our water is naturally hard with a high pH.
Is that the tiheatan moon which ppl are saying is sometimes 'toxic', I would not be keeping shrimp and if you've had a lot of success with similis then I would be more than comfortablewith this substrate, however I think it might be discounted atm.
Do you sell or would you sell a few similis?
I don't ship fish - I only sell at local swaps and auctions (Chicagoland Area).
I love this channel now but this video makes me feel like he’s running out of video ideas
Gosh, please don't tell that to the piece of paper with 100s of ideas. Haha
Dislikes come from live bloodworms
Haha - too funny!
This post was made by Daphnia inc.
I don't understand why people want to keep multis on light substrate. They are a nearly white fish and both the multis and their shells really pop on black sand.
I feel they darken up too much on dark substrate, but I love similis on black sand!
In Sydney Australia it was a effort to find these, but finally got my hands on them and love them.
my colony has now bred several times so I will be looking to spread these little gems out for others to enjoy as much as i do.
Great Video thanks
Where did you find them
I don't know if its the lighting or substrate, but the multies have brighter blue eyes whereas the similis don't have that.
Great Info. I have 7 Similis adults and about 30 fry in a 20 G. I would like to move some of the fry (3 months old) to another tank. Should I wait untill they are older, or do you think it would be safe tom move them now?
They will probably be ok as long as the new tank is fully cycled.
I really enjoyed the video this morning it was beautiful.. I'm really getting interested in these guys.. I was thinking about the options I would have with them.. So I'm going to check out some of your the videos and re-watch or watch 😁 thanks guys. I hope you have an amazing weekend 🐟🌿🌱
They are so worth it! :-)
Great channel!! Is 2mm sand ok for these two species?
It might be a little in the larger side, but not a horrible choice.
Where can I get multis? My LFS doesn’t have any
You could try The Wet Spot or Aquabid?
It's pretty cool guys😀
pls suggest tank mates of lake tanganyika for multies
This video covers tankmates! ua-cam.com/video/LymOSgIcDss/v-deo.html
I love multis but they are still hard to find. I would have thought as much as they reproduce it would be easier
I think the bigger issue is shipping them. Shell dwellers often don't do well when shipped.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics true I guess I'll have to stick with my Mbunas for now
There was a local guy who had some multis for sale a couple of weeks ago. I wanted them but didn't have much space for them right now. I will get them at some point though.
Sand city cichlids has them. Over night shipping. Didn’t loose any fish at all
hello. multifasciatus and similis is any more digging and active?
They are about the same - both love to move sand around!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thanks. It's just that I had read on some forum that the multis were more diggers and in a file that they weren't so good diggers. I like the multis better with their more marked stripes, I also read that the similis were somewhat more aggressive among them. With what you tell me that they are the same digging and behavior with your experience you make me happy. Thanks.
Great video thanks for sharing 💯👍✌️
We Love The Shellies!!
Love that low boy tank. . It always looks amazing
Thank you!
Its crazy how dark they are on that dark substrate!!!
Ya, that's why I like to keep them on black substrate. :-)
Can I use sea sand for shell dwellers?
GREAT VIDEOS!!! I’m starting a 20 gal long for similis, how many should I start with?
Maybe start with six and watch them fill up the tank with fry! Good luck!
What black sand are you using? Seems most of the black sand at Petco etc. turns out to be gravel more than sand.
Most of the black sand we have used lately is Petsmart Top Fin brand. Works fine for our purposes.
Hello there. What kind of black sand did you use for the similis? Thank you
That might have been Top Fin?
Similis, Lol I have both and absolutely love them.
Hey Mr Jason... great videos, very informative. I recently started a 20 gal long with black sand (Im waiting for my shells) I have a fluval 50 hob filter and a sponge filter and I’m starting to cycle my tank now. My question is do you have any suggestions where to get the similis from online? Also I want to put a plecco or two in there, would that be ok? Or can I put anything else in there? Thanks for all the information....
You could try the Wet Spot or Aquabid? A single BN pleco might be ok? Good luck!
I just had a ton of babies in my multi tank which is only 10 gallons. How old (or how big) should these fish be when you should sell them? I don’t want them to start getting in fights with each other if it gets overcrowded.
I would try to get them to about .75"?
Great help Jason. Love your videos. Keep up the good work. Watching in Ireland 🇮🇪🍀
Thank you for being here! :-)
Thanks for the vid! Love multis and have a 40 breeder set up for them for at least 4 months but have had no luck finding any yet but not giving up. Will happen eventually.
If they are on the younger side it might take them a little time. :-)
Absolutely love these fish! Have the privilege of owing and caring for both of these spunky fish, they have stopped breeding after one spawn for a weird reason. The water parameters are the same as before and it’s stable too.
Give them time - I have found mine go through breeding spurts.
Very interesting video. Have never kept any of the 2 but have N brevis. They are awesome little fishes with huge attitude
I have Brevis too and like them a lot!
Excellent video, multi’s are still on my list of fish to get but never see them here in Scotland. Will start looking in earnest when the lockdown eases a bit more 🤓
Hope you can find them!
Can I put both the similis and multis together?
I wouldn't only because hybridization is guaranteed to happen.
Hi can you do a video about sort out multis when you going to sell them they alvays going in to the shells and hide how do you do it?
Sure!
👍👌😍😍👌👍
Great tanks.
This is some of the best similis footage I’ve seen. Now I want them more than the multis.....
Thank you!
I love my multis!
👍💓👍
Prime time which two species can I keep in a 20 gallon long to breed and not take babies out ?
I suppose all fish will reach a critcal mass at some point and you will have to remove some fry to keep from over-crowding. However, if we're just talking about parents feeding on the fry - there are many options - the fish featured here, apistos, rams, kribs, keyhole cichlids, curviceps, guppies, platies, least killifish, just to name a few!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics sorry I should have been more specific I mean between the shell dewellers I got a 20 gallon set up for a breeding pair
Fairly new to the hobby. I'm loving the shellies. I like the look of a species tank but can you put these 2 together in a 20 long?
I wouldn't only because they will hybridize.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thank you! Good to know!
Thanks for video, I was considering both but will go with multis at least will get multis first :)
Hopefully they are easier to find. They are both great fish!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Not really, having a hard time finding them =/
How many similis can hold in to 24*12*12 inch tank?
Maybe start with six and let them breed?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thank for your reply sir!❤️
But i don't know the gender of the fish! Can i put randomly gender 6 similis?
Just wondering what the plants are? Do you find any benefits to having them in there?
I tend to float hornwort in most of my tanks. It helps remove excess nitrates so we can reduce water change volumes a little.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics awesome thanks I might try the same thing
Thanks for sharing; I’ve been debating which shellie to start with for a while now. This video has helped me make the decision!!
Good to hear!
Which did u decide how is ur experience
Shellies are on my fish bucket list for sure. They're so cute, and I love their lil vampire teeth!
I know! They look so cute and the closer you get, it's like - holy cow those things have teeth! :-)
@@PrimeTimeAquatics exactly! Lol
