    My struggle with Tom Wright is that I feel like I can never find anything concrete in what he says. At some point there have to be hard truths. Maybe if he would say "This is what I believe and here's why" it might be easier. I listened to him from Dallas to Louisville on a flight and I really have no idea what he believes.

      Then you have failed to engage with him properly. There are some areas where he leaves you with that impression, but overall he is clear and forthright. I am referring here to his more popular works such as 'Surprised by Hope' and his heavy scholarly volumes, but not his work on Paul and justification by faith, where I have not engaged with him yet.

    This almost borders on a caricature of N. T. Wright. Time was a popular magazine and Wright was certainly not offering a complete theology but a hopeful and pastoral word. I have read most of Wright's academic work and a good bit of his more popular level stuff. To characterize anything he writes as "depressing" is interesting in the extreme. A good bit of his writing is directed at the "problem of evil." Long before the pandemic he wrote "Evil and the Justice of God." In the pandemic he gave us "God and the Pandemic: A Christian Reflection on the Coronavirus and its Aftermath." Further, to claim that Wright does not believe in the "wrath of God" is simply absurd. But what brought on Covid IS A MYSTERY. This video is disappointing frankly.

That's what Calvinism teaches, if you're into the world salad teaches, I'm sure you'll think things like God doesn't determine our evil and we choose it ourselves. We would only choose it ourself, because God moves our will (using will as desires) so we will choose what he wants based off the antecedent of our will, which has been effectually set by God. Nothing about Wright's position on anything is surprising or disappointing when considering the context. Wright's theology is warmed over Wesleyanism (or if you will, before the split, Wesleyan Methodist). Virtually everything he believes can be aligned point by point with John Wesley. He feigns reformation theology in his conversations and presentations, but he's not.

    New humanity, God is making a new humanity. In Ephesians, Paul talks about one of the many purposes of the cross: to destroy the barriers that stood against us and divides us because of our sin, so that in Christ blood we are made a new creation, a new humanity. When I see this type of judgment pass from one christian to another it grieves my heart because we DO NOT understand the Kingdom of God. We reduce the message of the cross in terms of wrath and judgement but it is more than that, it is the victory of King Jesus in our place over sin, death and all kind of darkness. The victory of the crucified King and His resurrection. New creation people, NEW CREATION!

    Is God's wrath being revealed from heaven in ways that we cannot understand? Confusing us, such that we are only left to speculate as to whether God is angry with us, even as believers, or exacting his vengeance for something we may not be aware of.
    We all agree that all evil is a result of the sinfulness of this world,
    But, like you rightly said, unless there is a Prophet from God, we cannot definitively say, or infer that it is God's judgment for some specific sins....
    Come to think of it, if another pandemic comes up next year, what sins do we suggest God is punishing?
    God is still holding the door out for people to repent and be saved....
    At least till the appointed time..
    That should be our emphasis, sharing the gospel, not a pandemic...
    There's a lot of things we haven't figured out yet, we can't just presume, or we'll constantly live under fear of condemnation...
    These things are all going to last and occur until the time God has set for judgment....

    @James White. In this video on NT Wright's article, your emphasis on the need for an Old Testament-style prophet for attributions was not just thought-provoking; it was downright appalling when I first heard it. There was no need to ponder-it was an immediate red flag.
    Regarding your stance on attributing the pandemic solely to God's judgment, let's talk about the elephant in the room. While it's a theological discussion for you, it's crucial to recognize the complexity of the pandemic's origins. There's a significant likelihood that the virus was developed in a Chinese lab-an act of war against America. Sure, suspicions existed three years ago, but evidence was lacking for retaliation. How, then, can you distinguish a deliberate act of harm, whether through a virus or a giant bomb dropped on a city, from an "act of God"? War, whether through bombs or bioterrorism, knows no discrimination. But you have lumped God-fearing and righteous Christians in with the evil doers of this world who died together as a result of God's wrath.
    God, as demonstrated in the dialogue between Abraham and Him regarding Sodom and Gomorrah, exercises discretion. Your portrayal of God as a deity without discretion, punishing both the righteous and unrighteous alike, is nothing short of slander against God the Father. Your version of Christianity, even with your impressive credentials, isn't above reproach. It's crucial to tread carefully when presenting theological views, especially those that risk portraying God as a capricious monster.

      Wright believes in God bringing Justice to the earth, he is largely addressing our vocation as Christians in the present, hold onto knowing God desires redemption for all of creation. And as members of God’s royal priesthood, is our VOCATION to lament, and mourn with those who are mourning- rather than go to social media (like many) post about how God’s wrath is on display as people actively die do to COVID-19.

Your 'standard Anglican' in England doesn't really believe anything, least of all the central tenets of the Christian faith. He might have taken a bit of time to get there, but a couple minutes in he finally brought his point home well: that Wright doesn't clearly mention or allow for what the entire Bible gives testament to: God using disease/plague as a means of judgment and wrath. In some circles, it isn't politically correct, and it isn't Wright.

    • @bmstellar
      @bmstellar 4 роки тому +5

      jesuguru Wright’s article was not designed to give a full biblical view of pandemics. Also James has no way of proving if COVID 19 is due to abortion or gods wrath. The Bible shows God using various means to execute judgement but that doesn’t equate to the current pandemic to be that. It’s Pat Robertson type stuff. James response just simply isn’t helpful.

    • @bmstellar
      @bmstellar 4 роки тому +4

      jesuguru I would also add that many do talk about Gods wrath including Wright. It just isn’t front and center like it is with the Calvinist Baptist or neo-reformed. So called reformed proponents don’t seem to like it when their emphasis on certain issues is not shared.

    • @jesuguru2394
      @jesuguru2394 4 роки тому

      @@bmstellar Interesting responses. White quoted Wright expressly saying, “not only is it not the Christian vocation to explain, it IS part of the Christian vocation to NOT explain”. I’d like to know where in the Bible this is, as it’s far more presumptive than anything White said here. White didn’t say this must exclusively be considered judgment, but precluding it as a possibility as Wright did by precluding *any* explanation whatsoever (including judgment/wrath) is unbiblical, especially in light of how often God pronounces judgment and issues calls to repentance through those acts of judgment (decimation by sword, famine, disease, natural disaster) throughout the OT and NT. Wright says we should lament. Maybe, but how do we know? Where does the Bible say lamentation is always a right answer, but not consideration of judgment/repentance? White called for balance of both sides, Wright excluded one side. How is your criticism of White “helpful”?
      And when saying White isn’t “helpful”, helpful to whom, and by whose standard of helpfulness? If a person has a terminal illness, the most helpful thing they need is not vague assurances, but accurate diagnosis. Was Paul being unhelpful when in Romans 1 he declares God’s wrath is being revealed (ongoing)? And that’s against all “ungodliness and unrighteousness” throughout history - not just abortion, which tellingly you chose to mention though White did not here (though he could well have).
      And why refer to the "so called" reformed? Hard to see it as anything but a thinly veiled pejorative, thinly veiling your bias. I wouldn't call Wright a so-called Anglican, merely Anglican.
      But You’re entitled to your own opinion, no more or less than Wright/White/myself (and for the record, I don’t always agree with him). I wish you the best. Blessings

I’m pro life, Anglican and hold to the 39 articles as foundational so I am not sure how “telling” any of my comments have been but whatever. I would simply encourage you to look into the doctrines of God’s absence and lamentation. James take is not helpful or pastoral.He doesn’t know why God is doing what he is doing and he would do well to say that instead of trying to be the reformed edge lord. That being said, lament is clearly biblical when we don’t have answers. I have spoken. 😁
