SNOOP DOGG IN NASHVILLE - FEB 20, 2014 - RARE CLUB PERFORMANCE

Snoop Lion AKA Snoop Dogg performed in Nashville last night at The Cannery Ballroom, a venue which holds only 1,000 fans. He mixed in plenty of hip hop classics as well as his own anthems during the 45 minute set and donned a Tennessee Titans Steve McNair jersey for the occasion.
Beloved Nashville DJs Coach, Rate and Wick-It The Instigator opened the show with stellar sets that got the crowd moving long before Snoop took the stage for this rare club performance.
Security to enter the venue, however, was much tighter than usual with the sheer number of bouncers and officers nearly doubled for the show. When I arrived, there was a line winding out the front door of the venue with hundreds of fans patiently waiting in the rain to be searched inside and out before they could enjoy the show...and shelter. I watched as one poor girl desperately tried to untangle her massive nest of dreadlocks so that a gloved bouncer could dig through them for paraphernalia. And once inside, hawk-eyed officers roamed through the crowd seizing anything that remotely looked or smelled like weed. Not even legal tobacco vaporizers were safe to use.
I mention this because ironically, Snoop is an artist who has always freely spoken about his weed habit and promoted the substance not only through his music but through his way of life. He even sells his own line of signature, herbal vaporizers - the G-Pen, via High Times Magazine and I can't help but wonder how many of those were confiscated last night. However, a few savvy fans managed to smuggle their goods inside and when Snoop's call to "light it up!" went out to the crowd, they did as told.
I can only assume that Snoop made the call to tighten up the security. It was his show, after all. And I spoke with several insiders at the venue who told me that Snoop did not interact with any of the other talented folks on the evening's roster instead choosing to remain cloaked by a blacked out luxury van that whisked him to and from the venue. No other talent was allowed anywhere backstage and Snoop was also not spotted at the official pre-party upstairs in Mercy Lounge that featured performances from Moon Taxi, Jamey Johnson, Dustin Lynch and several others despite Snoop being listed as one of the co-hosts.
What Snoop did deliver, thankfully, was a set that featured many of the anthems that made him famous, several select hip hop classics and enough bass in my face that my head is still ringing 15 hours later. It was a damn good time and Snoop looked and sounded great - the man doesn't seem to age one bit and for a moment, I felt like I hadn't either - singing every word to Lodi Dodi, a song I first fell in love with in 1993.
