  • A Cuban baseball player has allegedly defected during a tournament here in the Netherlands. Last Sunday, Aledmis Díaz was supposed to have played during the finals of Baseball Week in Haarlem between Cuba and Puerto Rico. But he didn't show up.
Díaz is the third Cuban baseball player who's disappeared during a tournament in the Netherlands. A few years ago, it was Aroldis Chapman, who later signed a 30 million dollar contract with the Cincinatti Reds. And last year, it was Gerardo Concepción. He also resurfaced in the United States six months later.
Since there's no freedom of movement for individuals between Cuba and the United States, defecting is the only way for Cuban baseball players to escape. And Díaz too will probably resurface in the United States in a couple of months.
