    Chickens know what they're doing. I planted a bunch of skip laurel bushes in my backyard. Had them back there for years. Somebody told me that every part of that plant is toxic. I freaked out, planned on tearing them all out, etc. because I had chickens running around my backyard. Then I calmed down and realized the chickens had been back there for four years and haven't died yet, so I'm not gonna worry about it.

    Rhubarb…
    Two Springs ago,my chickens literally devoured every rhubarb leaf my plants produced.
    I found out later that summer that some chicks I had gotten from someone else were massively infested with 3 to four inch ROUNDWORMS,because these chicks were raised with horses that also were full of worms.
    I know rhubarb leaves are not safe for chickens to eat but they never touched them before & haven’t touched them since.
    Is it possible that they were eating the rhubarb leaves in order to self treat themselves for the worms?
    The worm infested chicks were thrice treated with veterinary supervision,& then returned to their original owner.
    I deverminize my flock at least 4x/yr.,& last year they didn’t touch the rhubarb.
    Coincidence?
    Not a single chicken got sick or died from eating the rhubarb leaves,but there were a disgusting and alarming amount of very large worms passed after the chickens ate the rhubarb leaves

      Given plenty of well-balanced, good and healthy foods, chickens will often eat exactly what they need.

    It can all be summed up, very concisely. It comes down to quantity. It's the only thing your chickens have access to or these foods, then yeah they might have a problem. But I have thrown every bit of this stuff, except for sugar and oil into the compost pile and never had a chicken die. I tear out my garden and throw it all in there including tomato plants, etc. and they have no issues with it. Birds are smart. If they have access to good stuff they will eat it and they will ignore the bad stuff.

    We have sour oranges that fall off the trees, and the chickens ignore them. They do like the loquats and star fruit, and try to get the low hanging ones off the trees. Fortunately, or sadly for us,our avacado tree has not fruited since planting, but maybe this year or next. Thank you for the great information.

    There was what looked like soybeans in the commercial scratch grain I bought.
    I thought it was odd so I looked at the ingredients on the bag but it didn't list beans at all.
    It was Producer's Pride from TSC.

    You know what else you shouldn’t feed them?!? The black foam insulation off your AC lines! Mine discovered the foam and pecked most of it off exposing the copper pipes! Scared me to death, but luckily it did not hurt them or their eggs. Crazy birds! 🙄

    Not sure how you could go about getting the birds to eat coffee? They don't like it period. I use straight coffee grounds in my coops for bedding and harvest every couple or three weeks for other use. The birds roost in the coop, the girls go back to lay eggs and other than that they're always outside. My roosters don't allow lollygagging around in the coop anyway. Don't know why that rule exists but it is what it is.

    here question: if I want feed chickens cat kibble or dog kibble how find ones with real meat,veggies and whole grains

    • @HobbyFarmGuys
      @HobbyFarmGuys  Місяць тому

      You really need to read the labels to see what is in it. Even then, I wouldn’t feed kibble too often.

      what chicken un friendly ingredients cheap cat kibble and dog kibble have

    • @nogames8982
      @nogames8982 Місяць тому

      I don’t even feed my dogs and cat kibble. Kibble is dead food full of chemicals and artificial vitamins. They are synthetic man-made chunks of crap. Do not feed that to your chickens. If you want to give your chickens, some real protein throw out some hamburger, Fish, mealworms, black soldier, flies, etc. Not kibble. Black oil sunflower seeds are good. Buy some real hay and throw that out there. But please don’t give your chickens kibble.
