So glad you made that note about avoiding noise gates if you can. Such a common mistake I see in podcasting forums. I just realized made a tutorial on different ways to approach reducing room reverb and the one tool you should avoid if possible (spolier: noise gate). They're super noticeable and once you hear what a noise gate sound like, you can't listen to podcasts or other audio that uses one. Or at least I can't. If you MUST, use an expander instead. Great as always, Curtis.
👍 Yes, there's potential for overuse here, big time. This can be configured as an expander and truthfully, I find that more than about 9 dB of expansion is just too much in most cases. In fact, If recording a single mic, I won't usually use even an expander. I find they're most useful when recording multiple people at the same time and even then can be a dicey proposition.

Curtis, a very fantastic video! Can't wait for the "multiple guest noise gate video". Since I got my RODECaster Pro I have been tweaking the noise gate because I run off of a gaming laptop that has a loud fan, and I am impressed with the noise gate feature of the RODECaste Pro. Question: I use Zoom to record my guests (sometimes multiple guests) for my radio show and podcast. Any thoughts of how the noise gate interacts with Zoom's recording feature (best practices)? (BTW, "The Enthusiasm Project", your video content is also always awesome). Great work to both! :)

@@Steppepulven Hi Emil, it is really just the same as here, just do one person at a time. Noise gates are often rough when working with multiple people in the same room. My general approach is to take it easy - don't try to eliminate ALL noise, keep the range setting at something reasonable like 9 to 12dB. And instruct the hosts/guests to work up close on their microphones.

I loved when you said "old school way". Way back when I was a live and studio sound engineer we used gates on mic'd up drum kits to reduce ambient noises being picked up. Sometimes we had gates set so aggressively that with headphones you could literally hear them "slam" shut. This actually became the defining sound of Phil Collins and Genesis (Yes, I am dating myself) where they added reverse reverb and used gates set to "slam shut" to produce that distinctive sound. Great explanation of gates and how to set them up.

This is about the same thing I was asking about in your last live stream. I often have a fan on during the summer time. I already knew about using a noise gate. But since I'm using a condenser mic I figured switching to a good dynamic mic would be a good starting point first. After reading the reviews I've decided upon buying the Shure SMLB since several people said its the best at rejecting unwanted background noise.
I helped set up a podcast room recently for a family friend and we're running on mac. I looked EVERYWHERE for that second screen that lets you adjust the threshold and range, ect. Where or how do you get this software? This video taught us so much and even makes me want a rodecaster pro. Thank you so much!

I love your stuff, Curtis! This just helped me dial in my noise gate for the Rode Podmic USB. Thank you! The Rode Connect software I'm using to set it include the elements you showed PLUS something called Hysterisis. It's a % based adjustment and shows 2 lines when it's engaged. At 0%, both lines are on top of each other (where the threshold is set to). As you add %, a new line drops down below the Threshold line. Do you know anything about what that word/concept means, or what that action is really doing? Thanks again!
Thanks. Hysteresis is like a second threshold which can help make the gate “flap” a bit less, essentially defining a range for the threshold. Worth adjusting it if you find the gate is obviously cutting out at the wrong time.
What a wonderful video. Thank you so much. Question about multiple speakers. To set up my noise gate, should I ask the other speaker to talk so I can see how much of their voice is captured by my mic and thus set my threshold for the noise gate? (and then repeats with her mic?) Basically, instead of using the fan or AC, I am using the other person's voice. I have two Podmics and I am usually a meter and a half ( about 5 feet) from the other speaker. We face each other, so that the her voice hits my mic from the back. Yet, my mic still captures her voice, preventing my noise gate to close. Yet, if I set the noise gate to high, it cuts some of my voice and I need to have a super control of the position of my mouth. How can I solve this? THANK YOU!!!
Yes, this is the challenge for situations where people talk over each other and the weakness of traditional noise gates like on the RODECaster Pro. There really just isn't a magic setting to accommodate both situations (normal pauses between talking and when two people in the same room talk over each other). For mic bleed, it seems like you're already doing the right things. You could perhaps add sound blankets to help absorb any sound that may be reflecting off of walls and bleeding in to each others' mics.

@@StrikeStudio You could turn it off on the RODECaster and do it in post instead. Or learn to tune it carefully and turn it on in the RODECaster. Either approach is legitimate. But we don't generally use a noise gate while recording singing vocals.
From Rode's website: Post-Fader Multitrack Recording Previously, when recording in multitrack to your computer, the output of the RØDECaster has been pre-fader, meaning that all of your settings - including where the level meters are set and any processing that you have applied - have been bypassed, leaving you with a raw recording. We have now included the option to record post-fader, accessed via settings > ‘Advanced> ‘Audio’ > ‘Multitrack’ and tapping the ‘Post Fader’ toggle. Once switched on, all processing, effects and fader positions will be recorded with your podcast. This means that any changes you make while recording your podcast are then recorded directly to your multitrack files. This is great if you’re looking to save time in post-production, but it also means that if you make a mistake during a recording, you won’t have anything to fall back on, so be extra careful when recording in Post-Fader Mode.
@@curtisjudd I did a couple of quick tests. It seems that the "Post Fader" option also activates and deactivates the effects only for channels 1 and 2 (the stereo mix). For channels 3-14, it seems that option only activates and deactivates the faders, plus the mute and solo buttons. Effects remain active unless you enable the "Bypass Audio Processing" option. N.B. For my tests, I did not record the audio with the RCP but listened to it from my Mac, channel by channel.
I know this video is a few years old so, if you don't respond i fully understand. Im having an issue that's driving me crazy with the rodecaster pro. When i have more than one mic being used i get this "open" mic sound" its very much like a hum. I thought that it was at first a gain setting issue so i played around with the gain. I wondered if the Pod Mic (which is dynamic and quiet for the most part) was being pushed too much with the fader or the gain so, i bought a cloudlifter knock off for the sake of clean gain. Then i turned on the phantom power and guess what. Still got the problem. It goes away for the most part when i use the noisegate but the noisegate on the unit if not dialed in perfectly will have your content choppy as it opens and closes and attacks and releases. And if more than one podcaster tries to talk at once you can hear the Hum come back as they talk over each other for a second. So im wondering if the podmic with the knock off cloudlifter actually requires the gain to be well below the "good zone" in the green parentheses on the readout when you set it up. i dont want to quit using the rodecaster becuase it is very dependable but i have to fix this little audio snafu because audio quality in a podcast is incredibly important. I would appraeciate any suggestions. thanks in advance
Thanks for the video. I have a question, there are people saying, that the attack is not setting when the noise gate is turned off, but its the setting when the noise gate turnes on. I am a little confused now. I tried to set mine, but it always cuts the breathing when I start talking and it sounds unnatural
@@curtisjudd I set it to 4ms on the latest Podcast recording and everytime the host was breathing in fast, the breathing was cut in half and it went louder instantly. Sounded very weird. I just imitated the sound and its gone when I set the attack to >150ms. I guess its okay for podcasts is it? For drums or anything else it might be way too long.

How do you open the rodcaster app that shows the tools? I downloaded the companion app and I can only figure out how to access the pads and update the firmware.
Curtis, is Channel one tweaked ALL the way to the top and leveled to 50 or so? Is it common to have the slider all the way up to get the mic rolling properly?

@@jaedpacted I haven't but a RODE VXLR+ should work. It will convert the +48V phantom power from the RODECaster to the 3-5V needed by most 3.5mm lavalier microphones.
There is a light static coming from my headphones, any idea on how to remove this? I did not have this issue until I updated the firmware to where you customize the compressor and noise gate
Thanks Sat. For phone calls, if at all possible, I'd recommend a VoIP call - Skype, Cleanfeed, Riverside.fm or equivalent - over a phone call for the best audio quality. Unfortunately I haven't found any magic settings to make mobile calls sound any better than they sound on most mobile phones.

Can anyone recommend some examples of the noise-gate or any other features on this device being used on some louder material? I am curious if this thing can be my sole interface but I am not sure if it can do things other than podcast voices
You mention enabling a switch to include the effect of the noise gate-on your recording wouldn't it be better to not print the effect, so you can tweak it if necessary later? (Otherwise you may be stuck with a release time that you only notice later, for example, especially on your own voice.) Or are there limitations, such as only one effect at once, that apply to the Rodecaster?
If you’re live-streaming or need to upload right after recording, you’ll want the effects baked in. If you have time for post, then yes, best to do it in post.
Hi Curtis....I have a question re: a feature on the Rodecaster and was hoping you can help. I apologize in advance that this may not be the correct video to post it, but I couldn't find a video of yours solely on the 2.1 firmware update. My question is in regards to the "Post Fader" and "Bypass Audio Processing" options for multitrack. Per my understanding... Post Fader: Bakes all audio processing/effects into multitrack file/tracks Bypass Audio Processing: According to Rode, when this option is enabled the "individual" tracks" within the multitrack bundle will bypass any audio processing; however, the main stereo mix will still have audio processing included. What doesn't makes sense... By default (when Bypass Audio Processing is NOT enabled), each track "includes" all of audio processing, so why is there a need for a Post Fader option???? If I keep "Bypass Audio Processing" disabled, doesn't it do the same thing as Post Fader by baking audio processing on every track? Thank you!
@@curtisjudd In default mode (when “Bypass Audio Processing” is off), it’s my understanding all audio processing/effects are baked into the output tracks. Firmware 2.1 added the “Post Fader” option, but I’m not sure how it’s useful considering I could simply keep “Bypass Audio Processing” turned off to net the same results. So I guess I’m asking what’s the difference between keeping “Bypass Audio Processing” off, and turning on “Post Fader”. Either state appears to do the same thing. Perhaps this is something I have to reach out to Rode to answer. My apology for any confusion.

@@curtisjudd Hey Curtis, I did some digging and found the answer to my question and just wanted to share in case it helps someone else. When "Bypass Audio Processing" is OFF (default mode), all ISOlated tracks (specifically) are recorded at "pre-amp gain levels" thus excluding the channel's fader position and state of Mute button. The stereo track, however, will include the position of channel faders and whether a channel was muted. When "Post Fader" is ON... it automatically deactivates "Bypass Audio Processing" and all tracks (ISO + stereo) will be recorded with position of channel faders. So the difference between the default mode (when "Bypass Audio Processing" is OFF) and when "Post Fader" is ON is whether or not the ISO tracks (specifically) will include the position of fader and state of Mute button as described above. Both settings will bake audio processing/effects into the recorded tracks. Thanks again for your replies!
Hi Curtis, there's been some discussion about using a Cloudlifter on the Rodecaster for dynamic mics such as the Podmic and Procaster. Do you have any thoughts on this subject?
Are you having hissing sounds in the Rodecaster even when no mics are connected? Is really frustrating and the problem is that I don't know if the Rodecaster is deflective or this is normal.
Not prominent hissing or self noise in the preamps, if that's what you mean? The headphone amps do have some hiss in them. It is all a matter of degree. Probably best to contact RODE support to determine for certain whether you copy is defective.
I just got the Rodecaster and downloaded the 2.1 firmware and I can't get to these audio settings. When I open the companion app all I get are the sound pads and the podcasts tab. NO settings are available. What am I doing wrong?
Just found your "compressor" video and it is *easily* the best tutorial I've come across in the two months since I got my Rodey Prodey - regardless of specificity with the gear (also, the internet should just wipe out any and all "how to" videos when a massive update has occurred...) Going to be using it with live streaming, and I'm about to dip into your hour long "accessories" video, hoping it's in there, but if not... I can't find anything on the "How To's" of things like "USB Mix-Minus" (should it just be on? and what are the advantages of having it off - since it's an option...?) Ducking.....If I talk over another video on say UA-cam or Twitch, during the stream, it gives me the "lead" voice, but if the lowered audio sounds a bit "poopy" is that something I can fix on my end or is that the software of those platforms....? Anyway - About to watch this one! The explanations on some of the terms were 1000% better than anyone else's! Subscribing!
Mix minus - I would leave it on for any remote call. I can't think of a situation where I wouldn't want it on. I'm not sure what "poopy" audio sounds like, exactly. 😄 But no, I believe if you have the ducking on, it is going to compress the other channels when multiple people are talking at the same time.

I am having problems with feed back or echo whenever I talk. What is best gain level. If l put it high l get feedback l l do it low l get weak signal. I need help
Question when I'm zoom calls using my rode and press the sound effect button and someone on zoom speaks it drains out the sound effect. How do I fix that?
I believe that is Zoom processing so I don't think there's anything on the RODECaster you can change to prevent that. There might be a Zoom setting but I'm not familiar enough with Zoom to know for sure.
Here's a question... I am a newsih owner and wondering...if I have set my input and output to the Rodecaster through USB channel why is it that I can't play a clip from UA-cam that it would pick up (say if I am quoting someone). I can hear the audio on my headphones but the individuals I was talking to on the computer video call could't hear the sound. Does it mean that if I can hear the audio on my headphones that the Rodecaster will record that audio from the youtube video? Do I have to have a second source (track) and add the computer via bluetooth as well? If I am not clear I can explain some more.
The mix minus feature prevents the UA-cam audio from playing back to the remote guests. You can try turning off mixminus. Or contact RODE support for potentially more ideas.
Which microphone? You may need to move the mic farther from the keyboard, or, if you have the mic attached to the desk, consider a stand which is not attached to the desk. Or a more directional mic might help as well.
@@curtisjudd the mic is condenser and it is on a boom arm that is Not connected to the table...also It is xbox controller we play on more than keyboard..This is our latest setup but before we used Logitech G Pro X headphones and they were not letting any sounds through but our voice quality was baddddd...We got plenty of examples uploaded on this channel so If you got time please check it out...Thx
@@sisbroshou3786 So the latest video it appears the young guy is using a headset mic of some sort? When he gets excited, the audio is clipping. I'm not sure how much you want to spend to solve this problem, but a dynamic microphone with an interface like a Sound Devices MixPre which could prevent the clipping with its limiters would get the job done. But that's a pricey investment.

No, the settings will work without connecting to a PC. However, if you want to setup the settings with the fancy meters and graphs, you do have to be connected to get those. But the RODECaster Pro has all of those settings in its own menus, just not the fancy graphs.
Hi Curtis, Great video! You talked about another episode around noisegate settings in the context with multiple people, have you been making this, or could you maybe provide some insight into this. I'm using the RODEcaster pro with 4 Rode Wireless Go lavalier's, in a live-streaming setup, where i have this exact issue around the noisegate. The talents who is being interviewed, is sitting aprox. 1 meter away from each other, so my challenge is to use this noisegate function (in order to get clear sound from the lavalier), but without it being picked up by the speaker next to the other person, this i find really tricky, but maybe i imagine you had some solutions or tips around this? :) Cheers!
Hi Niklas, it is really hard with omnidirectional lavaliers. I haven’t been able to make that work reliably unless the people are farther apart. With cardioid dynamic microphones. It is a lot easier.

It's a shame we can't really use the "normal" and more suited cardioid dynamic mics for podcasts, since they will get in the way and not look very pretty on the screen, interview sceneri. Hi Rivenworld, a high pass filter or low shelf in EQ can help a touch but a fan like this one is a broadband sound source so it'll still be very prominent in the recording.

Hi Antoine, where will you be publishing your audio? If to the internet, then you'll choose ITU-R BS770-3 and set the target loudness to -16 LUFS. Leave all other settings at default. Best wishes!

I stumbled across this video and wanted to see if anyone here seems to find the preamps on the RCP very noisy. With all effects off there's a noticible hiss in every recording. The only time it goes away is if the noise gate is turned on. Gain is set to 40 and using Shure sm7b mics but have to de-noise every episode in post because every channel adds noise. I've replaced the RCP and both do the same thing.
If I mute all channels noise goes away too and there are no electrical problems in my environment that I know. Of no ground loop or anything. I bought an electrical tester and everything checks out from my outlets.
I seem to have the same issue using the Podmic and all the processing at default. Seems like my podmic itself needs high gains of 49-52 levels to get some clear sound, which brings in the preamp noise. Have you found a solution? I have sent samples of the recordings to the Rode country agent, and awaiting feedback.
Have you updated to the latest firmware? Or did you mean that to optimize the sound for your voice/microphone/room, you set these same settings differently? That is normal, by the way.
OMG... opinion opinion... no! All this has already been established decades years of pro broadcast... play with this if you want to play, but to get the best settings just use the established numbers for talk radio.

Thanks Marshall - yes - for drums they can be pretty interesting and create that distinct acoustic drum, but super discrete sound.

This is about the same thing I was asking about in your last live stream. I often have a fan on during the summer time. I already knew about using a noise gate. But since I'm using a condenser mic I figured switching to a good dynamic mic would be a good starting point first.
After reading the reviews I've decided upon buying the Shure SMLB since several people said its the best at rejecting unwanted background noise.

I helped set up a podcast room recently for a family friend and we're running on mac. I looked EVERYWHERE for that second screen that lets you adjust the threshold and range, ect. The Rode Connect software I'm using to set it include the elements you showed PLUS something called Hysterisis. It's a % based adjustment and shows 2 lines when it's engaged. At 0%, both lines are on top of each other (where the threshold is set to). As you add %, a new line drops down below the Threshold line.
Do you know anything about what that word/concept means, or what that action is really doing?

Thanks. Hysteresis is like a second threshold which can help make the gate “flap” a bit less, essentially defining a range for the threshold. Worth adjusting it if you find the gate is obviously cutting out at the wrong time.

What a wonderful video. Thank you so much. Question about multiple speakers. To set up my noise gate, should I ask the other speaker to talk so I can see how much of their voice is captured by my mic and thus set my threshold for the noise gate? (and then repeats with her mic?) Basically, instead of using the fan or AC, I am using the other person's voice. I have two Podmics and I am usually a meter and a half ( about 5 feet) from the other speaker. We face each other, so that the her voice hits my mic from the back. Yet, my mic still captures her voice, preventing my noise gate to close. Yet, if I set the noise gate to high, it cuts some of my voice and I need to have a super control of the position of my mouth. How can I solve this? THANK YOU!!!
Yes, this is the challenge for situations where people talk over each other and the weakness of traditional noise gates like on the RODECaster Pro. There really just isn't a magic setting to accommodate both situations (normal pauses between talking and when two people in the same room talk over each other). For mic bleed, it seems like you're already doing the right things. You could perhaps add sound blankets to help absorb any sound that may be reflecting off of walls and bleeding in to each others' mics.

Also, I would NOT use the noise gate to record singing. Instead, put the singer into a quite space like a closet.

@@StrikeStudio You could turn it off on the RODECaster and do it in post instead. Or learn to tune it carefully and turn it on in the RODECaster. Either approach is legitimate. But we don't generally use a noise gate while recording singing vocals.

Isn't the "Post Fader" option related only to the faders and the mute buttons?
From Rode's website: Post-Fader Multitrack Recording
Previously, when recording in multitrack to your computer, the output of the RØDECaster has been pre-fader, meaning that all of your settings - including where the level meters are set and any processing that you have applied - have been bypassed, leaving you with a raw recording.
We have now included the option to record post-fader, accessed via settings > ‘Advanced> ‘Audio’ > ‘Multitrack’ and tapping the ‘Post Fader’ toggle.
Once switched on, all processing, effects and fader positions will be recorded with your podcast. This means that any changes you make while recording your podcast are then recorded directly to your multitrack files. This is great if you’re looking to save time in post-production, but it also means that if you make a mistake during a recording, you won’t have anything to fall back on, so be extra careful when recording in Post-Fader Mode.
No, it also includes the effects.

@@curtisjudd I did a couple of quick tests.
It seems that the "Post Fader" option also activates and deactivates the effects only for channels 1 and 2 (the stereo mix).
For channels 3-14, it seems that option only activates and deactivates the faders, plus the mute and solo buttons. Effects remain active unless you enable the "Bypass Audio Processing" option.
N.B. For my tests, I did not record the audio with the RCP but listened to it from my Mac, channel by channel.

I know this video is a few years old so, if you don't respond i fully understand. Im having an issue that's driving me crazy with the rodecaster pro. When i have more than one mic being used i get this "open" mic sound" its very much like a hum. I thought that it was at first a gain setting issue so i played around with the gain. I wondered if the Pod Mic (which is dynamic and quiet for the most part) was being pushed too much with the fader or the gain so, i bought a cloudlifter knock off for the sake of clean gain. Then i turned on the phantom power and guess what. Still got the problem. It goes away for the most part when i use the noisegate but the noisegate on the unit if not dialed in perfectly will have your content choppy as it opens and closes and attacks and releases. And if more than one podcaster tries to talk at once you can hear the Hum come back as they talk over each other for a second. So im wondering if the podmic with the knock off cloudlifter actually requires the gain to be well below the "good zone" in the green parentheses on the readout when you set it up. i dont want to quit using the rodecaster becuase it is very dependable but i have to fix this little audio snafu because audio quality in a podcast is incredibly important. I would appraeciate any suggestions. thanks in advance

I have a question, there are people saying, that the attack is not setting when the noise gate is turned off, but its the setting when the noise gate turnes on.
I am a little confused now. I tried to set mine, but it always cuts the breathing when I start talking and it sounds unnatural

@@curtisjudd I set it to 4ms on the latest Podcast recording and everytime the host was breathing in fast, the breathing was cut in half and it went louder instantly. Sounded very weird. I just imitated the sound and its gone when I set the attack to >150ms. I guess its okay for podcasts is it? For drums or anything else it might be way too long.

How do you open the rodcaster app that shows the tools? I downloaded the companion app and I can only figure out how to access the pads and update the firmware.
Go to the file menu and choose "Open Effects Editor"
Curtis, is Channel one tweaked ALL the way to the top and leveled to 50 or so? Is it common to have the slider all the way up to get the mic rolling properly?
For a Shure SM7b without a cloud lifter or fethead it is typical. For other microphones it should not generally be necessary.

I got one more question, Have you ever personally tried connecting a 3.5mm Lav into the xlr's using adapters?
I cannot get any of my configurations to work, It would helpful to observe someone using a 3.5mm lav in the rodecaster NOT using the TRRS port in the back.
@@jaedpacted I haven't but a RODE VXLR+ should work. It will convert the +48V phantom power from the RODECaster to the 3-5V needed by most 3.5mm lavalier microphones.
There is a light static coming from my headphones, any idea on how to remove this? I did not have this issue until I updated the firmware to where you customize the compressor and noise gate

Thanks Sat. For phone calls, if at all possible, I'd recommend a VoIP call - Skype, Cleanfeed, Riverside.fm or equivalent - over a phone call for the best audio quality. Unfortunately I haven't found any magic settings to make mobile calls sound any better than they sound on most mobile phones.

How would you compare the noise gate here to the DBX 286s? Is it comparable, is it more aggressive?
About the same. Depends more on how you configure it. The 286S is a little easier to setup with its two settings.

You mean like music? I don't think I'd buy this for mixing/recording music. Too purpose-built for podcast/spoken word content.
You mention enabling a switch to include the effect of the noise gate-on your recording wouldn't it be better to not print the effect, so you can tweak it if necessary later? (Otherwise you may be stuck with a release time that you only notice later, for example, especially on your own voice.) Or are there limitations, such as only one effect at once, that apply to the Rodecaster?
If you’re live-streaming or need to upload right after recording, you’ll want the effects baked in. If you have time for post, then yes, best to do it in post.
Hi Curtis....I have a question re: a feature on the Rodecaster and was hoping you can help. I apologize in advance that this may not be the correct video to post it, but I couldn't find a video of yours solely on the 2.1 firmware update.
My question is in regards to the "Post Fader" and "Bypass Audio Processing" options for multitrack. Per my understanding...
Post Fader: Bakes all audio processing/effects into multitrack file/tracks
Bypass Audio Processing: According to Rode, when this option is enabled the "individual" tracks" within the multitrack bundle will bypass any audio processing; however, the main stereo mix will still have audio processing included.
What doesn't makes sense... By default (when Bypass Audio Processing is NOT enabled), each track "includes" all of audio processing, so why is there a need for a Post Fader option???? If I keep "Bypass Audio Processing" disabled, doesn't it do the same thing as Post Fader by baking audio processing on every track?

In default mode, I believe the effects are baked into the mix and I believe that is all that is recorded. Did I understand your question correctly?

Firmware 2.1 added the “Post Fader” option, but I’m not sure how it’s useful considering I could simply keep “Bypass Audio Processing” turned off to net the same results.
So I guess I’m asking what’s the difference between keeping “Bypass Audio Processing” off, and turning on “Post Fader”. Either state appears to do the same thing.

@@curtisjudd Hey Curtis, I did some digging and found the answer to my question and just wanted to share in case it helps someone else.
When "Bypass Audio Processing" is OFF (default mode), all ISOlated tracks (specifically) are recorded at "pre-amp gain levels" thus excluding the channel's fader position and state of Mute button. The stereo track, however, will include the position of channel faders and whether a channel was muted.
When "Post Fader" is ON... it automatically deactivates "Bypass Audio Processing" and all tracks (ISO + stereo) will be recorded with position of channel faders.
So the difference between the default mode (when "Bypass Audio Processing" is OFF) and when "Post Fader" is ON is whether or not the ISO tracks (specifically) will include the position of fader and state of Mute button as described above. Both settings will bake audio processing/effects into the recorded tracks.

For live-streaming I think that's a good idea. For podcasts with a post production workflow, not necessary.

Are you having hissing sounds in the Rodecaster even when no mics are connected? Is really frustrating and the problem is that I don't know if the Rodecaster is deflective or this is normal.
Not prominent hissing or self noise in the preamps, if that's what you mean? The headphone amps do have some hiss in them. It is all a matter of degree. Probably best to contact RODE support to determine for certain whether you copy is defective.
I just got the Rodecaster and downloaded the 2.1 firmware and I can't get to these audio settings. When I open the companion app all I get are the sound pads and the podcasts tab. NO settings are available. What am I doing wrong?
If you have all the settings the same as demonstrated at the start of this video, I'm not sure. May need to contact RODE support. Best wishes!
Just found your "compressor" video and it is *easily* the best tutorial I've come across in the two months since I got my Rodey Prodey - regardless of specificity with the gear (also, the internet should just wipe out any and all "how to" videos when a massive update has occurred...)
Going to be using it with live streaming, and I'm about to dip into your hour long "accessories" video, hoping it's in there, but if not... I can't find anything on the "How To's" of things like "USB Mix-Minus" (should it just be on? and what are the advantages of having it off - since it's an option...?)
Ducking.....If I talk over another video on say UA-cam or Twitch, during the stream, it gives me the "lead" voice, but if the lowered audio sounds a bit "poopy" is that something I can fix on my end or is that the software of those platforms....?
Anyway - About to watch this one! The explanations on some of the terms were 1000% better than anyone else's! Subscribing!
Mix minus - I would leave it on for any remote call. I can't think of a situation where I wouldn't want it on. I'm not sure what "poopy" audio sounds like, exactly. 😄 But no, I believe if you have the ducking on, it is going to compress the other channels when multiple people are talking at the same time.

Question when I'm zoom calls using my rode and press the sound effect button and someone on zoom speaks it drains out the sound effect. How do I fix that?
I believe that is Zoom processing so I don't think there's anything on the RODECaster you can change to prevent that. There might be a Zoom setting but I'm not familiar enough with Zoom to know for sure.
Here's a question... I am a newsih owner and wondering...if I have set my input and output to the Rodecaster through USB channel why is it that I can't play a clip from UA-cam that it would pick up (say if I am quoting someone). I can hear the audio on my headphones but the individuals I was talking to on the computer video call could't hear the sound. Does it mean that if I can hear the audio on my headphones that the Rodecaster will record that audio from the youtube video? Do I have to have a second source (track) and add the computer via bluetooth as well? If I am not clear I can explain some more.
The mix minus feature prevents the UA-cam audio from playing back to the remote guests. You can try turning off mixminus. Or contact RODE support for potentially more ideas.

Which microphone? You may need to move the mic farther from the keyboard, or, if you have the mic attached to the desk, consider a stand which is not attached to the desk. Or a more directional mic might help as well.

we play on more than keyboard..This is our latest setup but before we used Logitech G Pro X headphones and they were not letting any sounds through but our voice quality was baddddd...We got plenty of examples uploaded on this channel so If you got time please check it out...Thx
@@sisbroshou3786 So the latest video it appears the young guy is using a headset mic of some sort? When he gets excited, the audio is clipping. I'm not sure how much you want to spend to solve this problem, but a dynamic microphone with an interface like a Sound Devices MixPre which could prevent the clipping with its limiters would get the job done. But that's a pricey investment.

No, the settings will work without connecting to a PC. However, if you want to setup the settings with the fancy meters and graphs, you do have to be connected to get those. But the RODECaster Pro has all of those settings in its own menus, just not the fancy graphs.

Hi Curtis, Great video! You talked about another episode around noisegate settings in the context with multiple people, have you been making this, or could you maybe provide some insight into this. I'm using the RODEcaster pro with 4 Rode Wireless Go lavalier's, in a live-streaming setup, where i have this exact issue around the noisegate. The talents who is being interviewed, is sitting aprox. 1 meter away from each other, so my challenge is to use this noisegate function (in order to get clear sound from the lavalier), but without it being picked up by the speaker next to the other person, this i find really tricky, but maybe i imagine you had some solutions or tips around this? :)

Hi Niklas, it is really hard with omnidirectional lavaliers. I haven’t been able to make that work reliably unless the people are farther apart. With cardioid dynamic microphones. It is a lot easier.

I much prefer an expander than a gate. Surely if they have a compressor, they could also use an expander.
I agree. And fortunately the new settings allow it to be used as an expander.
Please forgive my inexperience here but wouldn't it be better to use EQ rather than a noise gate to control the lower (annoying) frequencies?
Hi Rivenworld, a high pass filter or low shelf in EQ can help a touch but a fan like this one is a broadband sound source so it'll still be very prominent in the recording.

Hi Antoine, where will you be publishing your audio? If to the internet, then you'll choose ITU-R BS770-3 and set the target loudness to -16 LUFS. Leave all other settings at default. Best wishes!

I stumbled across this video and wanted to see if anyone here seems to find the preamps on the RCP very noisy. With all effects off there's a noticible hiss in every recording. The only time it goes away is if the noise gate is turned on. Gain is set to 40 and using Shure sm7b mics but have to de-noise every episode in post because every channel adds noise. I've replaced the RCP and both do the same thing.
If I mute all channels noise goes away too and there are no electrical problems in my environment that I know. Of no ground loop or anything. I bought an electrical tester and everything checks out from my outlets.
I have not experienced that here. When I hear noise, it is from actual noise in the room which is picked up by the microphones.
I seem to have the same issue using the Podmic and all the processing at default. Seems like my podmic itself needs high gains of 49-52 levels to get some clear sound, which brings in the preamp noise. Have you found a solution? I have sent samples of the recordings to the Rode country agent, and awaiting feedback.

Have you updated to the latest firmware? Or did you mean that to optimize the sound for your voice/microphone/room, you set these same settings differently? That is normal, by the way.
