- Ukraine's appointment of General Oleksandr Syrskyi as commander-in-chief has elicited mixed reactions from military personnel, Politico reported. The military shakeup by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has triggered despair in many of his troops. On hearing of his appointment, a Ukrainian soldier sent a message in a group chat of veterans of the Bakhmut fight: "We're all f@#$ed”. Zaluzhny reportedly described Syrskyi as “a good, decent military man, with a lot of experience and a very good strategic vision of war”. Syrskyi is an experienced general who has served in the Ukrainian army since the collapse of the USSR. But will he be able to take on the challenges amid Russia's ongoing onslaught? The Russian's only had 40K troops around Kyiv simply to let Zelensky know Putin was serious during the Istanbul peace agreement. Zelensky signed a tentative agreement and requested the Russians withdraw from Kyiv as a show of good faith. They did and were attacked on the way out and Zelensky went to war. Hardly something to be proud of.
Kharkov was also a planned withdrawal of Russians. In the early days of the Special Military Operation they had to consolidate their forces after Zelensky chose war. Once again, attacking an army that was withdrawing, while part of war, is hardly a great victory.
If he's this good then how come he wasn't put in this job to begin with?

The Changes in Military Command during a war and in peace time happens all the time, has been happening for centuries, the problem with soldiers worrying about the changes in command is that they have grown accustomed to a particular commander which is looked upon as a mentor or a friend.

Saddening to see Zelensky playing politics during a war as I think he removed a potential political rival. Ukraine certainly can't afford an attritionist general when outnumbered. I actually hope he has played right into his potential rivals' hands, and he does indeed run for office now. Perhaps they need to accept the status quo ceding territory, and, should have taken those F-18s Australia offered instead of snubbing their noses at fighter jets whose only failing was that time left on their airframes was dwindling but could still have bought them up to 5 years while waiting for those F-16s.. The newly appointed general is the one that has one Ukraine's major victories, repulsed the Russians at Kyiv and retook Kharkiv oblast. In a way he is simply even more battle hardened than Zahluzny, he was even responsible for covering the retreat of Ukraine in 2014 out of encirclement aka gained battlefield acumen there.

Replacing General Zaluzhny with Syrskyi would rather aggravate combat capabilities of the Soldiers in the battle fields. He didn’t defend Kyiv successfully, Russia pulled out after having a peace settlement in Istanbul was agreed to and signed, but then Boris Johnson flew to Ukraine and told Zelensky to continue the war. We were told in the west that the Russian army had bitten off to much, and had to regroup and focus on the south when they had pulled away from Kyiv.
