    The cone is quite a clever design. Might see if it's available separately, otherwise I'm 3D printing one for my Metcal extractor.

      I might have to make one for my Metcal extractor. It needs looking at as it keeps beeping on startup which i think is block filter but they are lovely and clean. nus be a service manual out there somewhere. Still that looks good, i might make a holder on it for the remote start button to keep it all tidy.

    I have the same unit since a few years, love it. Biggest downside I think is that the cone is not resistant to a hot soldering iron. Mine looks pretty beat up by now.

    maybe a 3d printed holder than goes from the bench to the fan scoop. like an i with the dot being the scoop and the bottom being a wall to stop the air being pulled in from the back.
    Cardboard and a glue gun could do a cheap prototype.

    Grab yourself an airflow meter/ hot wire anemometer to check the suction/ distance on that min should be 10m/s for solder smoke. I'd snake it in from the back between the equipment and the scope arm an lay it at the back of where the work will sit so you dont obstruct the scope and don't melt the funnel 👍

    Question for the fluid physics and design types: Could there be any advantage to fluting/notching/etc. the edge of an air intake nozzle for better airflow? (I mean in the design, not hacking up a bought one!) …kind of like the proposed Starshade having those flower-petal edges to do a better job.

      I've been experimenting with adding airflow from another fan to create a gentle draft over the work area. You can move the extractor 300mm away from the work area with only a tiny bit of air movement

    More fantastic than Fran-tastic, haha!
    Now, with the funnel sitting on the bench, how much can you raise your work piece to still have the fumes sucked? That would be interesting.
    Higher settings could be useful for two stations side by side, the unit has two ports after all. I'm sure you can buy an additional snake and funnel.

    • @EEVblog2
      @EEVblog2  16 днів тому +2

      Yeah, possible to have two heads. Don't know how more effective it would be though, they could interefere with each other.

      @@EEVblog2 assuming you have equal length snakes that are bent to a similar shape, the suction should distribute evenly. Otherwise the different flow resistance will make one of them suck better than the other.

      At that price, I’d suspect counterfeit. They retail for US $800 - $1200. At that, following the usual 100% markup, I’d expect a wholesale price of about $350 - $400. You can’t make it up with volume if you’re selling at $180…

    • @shazam6274
      @shazam6274 15 днів тому

      @@jaro6985 Read the entire comment, where I point out a simple and cheap way to filter the exhaust. BTW, I have used this method as a professional engineer for over 40 years, and the simple truth is the the "stuff" in the "smoke" is vaporized rosin, which if you look at it the solder or the tin is not "floating around" in the air because at room temperature, it solidifies quickly as it cools and gravity pulls it out of the air. It will put a light dusting of rosin powder on your bench where it is blown, which can be easily cleaned with IPA and a paper towel. That is if you don't add the coffee filter I described, in which case when that starts to turn yellow / amber, throw it out and put a new one on. And just in case you think that this is all a "toxic" compound, the ingredients of rosin flux are Tree Sap and alcohol.
